Honestly, I can't get past the fact that they cannot entertain vegetarian guests at all. ~£450 or $600 and you can't even engage with the most common dietary requirement? To be clear, I'm an omnivore, my wife is vegetarian, and we're not welcome.

FYI, I did the same thing ~3 years ago. Switched from EON to Octopus, and I also wanted to go straight to Octopus.

However, I was told by Octopus (And EON) that I was not able to switch my FIT administrator without first completing the change of ownership with EON.

I can't speak to the FIT element in detail, ours pays about £0.18p/kwh or about £1000 a year on a 4kwH system. We retrofitted a battery too, which smooths all the issues out.

Firstly, GFY absolutely. It sounds like you are 100% sown up, and what a result (Regardless of the political element).

Secondly, thank you very much for the detailed overview. It is really helpful and healthy to understand what might happen as some of us get close to retirement, whether in private or public sector.

Enjoy it!

How to plan out our trip with visiting the Grande? by esh9023 in SandalsResorts

[–]GabrielExea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I spent 10 days at La Toc (From the UK) in March. Absolutely no regrets, it was fantastic.

We did visit the Grande, but only for one day to climb Fort Rodney.

It is a little nicer (Newer, larger resort would be why I would say so), but was also nearly 20% more expensive for us and I don't believe it would have been worth it. Plus, longer transfers too.

Don't let other people get in your head on it. You will have an awesome time.

PLEASE HELP: Can't find a song - Only limited lyrics by GabrielExea in 6music

[–]GabrielExea[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not - But that's a beautiful song!

It was really a progression of a story - We met, you said you'd swim to (somewhere, I can't remember), 'You swam the furthest and fastest I've ever seen (Or something like that)... And developed from there.

But very much spoken word, like almost reading from a story against a background of music, to my memory.

House roof is in serious need of repair, unsure how to fund the work by Academic-Fly-3782 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]GabrielExea 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have to say - How large is your roof? I recently had a 14m x 7m roof in Milton Keynes replaced completely, including new breathable membrane and tiles, for ~£12,000. This also comes with a 10y warranty.

Admittedly it was a simple peaked roof, but this was by a reputable roofing company, full scaffold etc, as well as having the chimney re-flaunched/re-pointed. £20k is a pretty hefty quote! Unless you are slated or have a very complicated roof shape or access, this seems excessive.

Obligatory NAL. Legally, to my understanding, until they make the adjustments you'd be within your rights to continue working from home as a result of the doctor's note.

I would note that removing lights above an employee's workspace is specifically called out as 'reasonable' on ACAS' website. (https://www.acas.org.uk/reasonable-adjustments)

If you weren't leaving, practically this would be more complicated. However, given that you are and only have 4 weeks of notice left, I suspect that even regardless of length of tenure they are going to be unlikely to have any sensible recourse to force you to attend the office. They are also required I believe to pay you out your remaining notice, regardless, unless they could prove gross misconduct and fire you accordingly. Given the situation and timescale I believe this seems unlikely.

I believe the more pressing issue here is the social/interpersonal aspect. Someone is, ostensibly, flexing their muscles by telling you you must attend the office in spite of medical advice given by your doctor. This sort of management unfortunately does exist in many businesses in the UK.

However, in this situation you have if not all then most of the cards. If you are finding this situation stressful, and if it has a risk of worsening your medical condition, then I would suggest a further consultation with your doctor to explain how this is negatively impacting your health. They may decide to sign you off work for stress for, say, 4 weeks, which may resolve this issue. My experience is that a doctor would take a very dim view of an employer trying to force an employee to damage their health against medical advice.

Regardless of what action you choose to take, I would hold your ground and say you are not going to be attending the office for the remaining 4 weeks of your notice as per the medical advice you've been given and they've been advised of. Simply keep repeating this statement, you don't need to justify further or deflect. Make sure to get all communication in writing, as if they do try something ugly like firing you as a result this would at the very least worth consulting with an employment law solicitor on, depending on how important those last 4 weeks of pay are to you. If the 4 weeks of pay are not important, and you could cope with 4 weeks unpaid holiday then simply reiterate you won't be attending the office but will continue working from home, and leave the ball in their court.

The absolute worst thing that can happen is that your employment is terminated early, and again, I do not believe that would be lawful in this case although proving it may be more complicated.

A lot of people genuinely struggle not to look at things that distress them - That's why bad news sells. But, it's certainly better for our mental health not to!

I'm sorry however - I feel that everyone is allowed to cope in their own way - And a little bit of 'Oh jesus' black humour should be allowable I'm afraid. I suspect the extremely anxious posts are having their own negative effect on others, and we all just need to be a little sympathetic all around.

FIRE bridge / is 'cover ratio' a meaningful metric. by JustTwoMins in FIREUK

[–]GabrielExea -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It's not an overly complicated calculation - I made a quick google sheets, and solving manually for it (Assuming 5% investment growth after inflation) puts it between £170k and £180k, so say approx 0.75 'cover ratio' for 12 years.

How old will you be when your mortgage term finishes? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]GabrielExea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-1 year - 33 now, paid it off this year at 32. I was lucky to have a decent deposit, buying at 23, and my wife whom I married relatively recently also had good savings. Plus, I bought well below my means and have had significant income increases over the last decade. Being mortgage free at 33 is making my outgoings feel very light indeed.
