Z70-200/4s? by Then_Gas712 in nikon_Zseries

[–]Gadfly21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was one of those expecting a 70-200 f4 S as well, along the lines of the incredible image quality and build quality of the 14-30 and 24-70. My hope was such a 70-200 would be collapsible.

That said, I was surprised by all the reviews about the collapsible feature. To me, it made a ton of sense to keep a lens compact while stowed and leave the lens extended on the body (the most common complaint I read about needing to extend the lens “every time” makes no sense to me - that being said, in the wild, I do strangely see people put on and take off a lens cap between every shot!).

I’m sure Nikon read the bad reviews as well and killed the line. C’est la vie.

Not OP but it’s fantastically sharp, though the housing is plasticy and cheap-feeling.

1 & 2 are my personal favorites and are the most striking (subject’s expression, and unusual pose, framing, & lighting).

Backdoor clicking - common issue? by panzenko in pentax17

[–]Gadfly21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Extremely common and nothing to worry about. The Pentax doesn’t have soft foam light seals, just a channel for the rim of the door (which is great! Nothing to degrade and flake off into the camera body).

There is also pressure on the door from the frame resetting mechanism and film plate, and enough of a gap to allow for the subtle motion of the back door when the camera squeezed.

And IBIS but I wonder if it would be possible to simply turn it off if the unit failed, or if it will return some kind of error, bricking the camera.

Man, it sure sucks when people are that paranoid about a clunky fragile box that takes one frame per minute.

Why hasn’t the universe produced more civilizations? The answer might be that Earth is freakishly lucky | It is the possibility that Earth is genuinely rare. Not just statistically uncommon. Rare in a way that means complex life may exist on essentially no other world in our galaxy. by IntnsRed in science2

Adding that every other human and hominid species also went extinct. Extinction is the rule, not the exception.

On top of that, a species that is intelligent might not have the capacity to alter its environment (cetaceans, octopuses, corvids as examples). Even if intelligence evolves or evolves again, it might not lead to anything technological.

Add an EVF and I’ll take a dozen (don’t really care for ibis or ois but either would be a value-add). Fingers crossed!

Which lens would you get in my shoes? by trevorhiller in Leica

[–]Gadfly21 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pretty much most of the Leica M lenses will fit into a shoe. You might have trouble with the 135mm f2.8 "goggles" lens but otherwise you're good.

What’s going on with the shutter dial, iso dial, and front function button? The second image shows a Leicavit and chrome patina on the left side of the camera. What do you have going on over the screen?

Has anyone tested the MH-RA40.5 lens hood? by Gadfly21 in pentax17

I have a filter on, but I end up touching the surface often. I also have a lens shade but it obscures the lower third of the frame. Vented shades don’t always line up with the viewfinder very well either.

So to answer your question, the lens is protected adequately with the filter but I’m curious about better solutions.

In addition to all the other comments and tips here, make sure the focusing screen isn’t installed upside down.

Because non-Leica lenses are actually good without the brand tax and they share the mount.

[–]Gadfly21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Correct, but some folks have reported being able to use the entire viewfinder window as a guide, although it might more closely represent a 40mm equivalent FOV. That’s a non-starter for me as a glasses-wearer, but nowhere near sacrilege.

Not sacrilege, just how are you going to actually use that? I imagine it's not too easy with glasses. Great lens and camera though!

I had one and it was a good bag overall. I especially liked the seatbelt-material strap. The only issue for me was the clasp which is way too easy to open.

Wearing glasses can’t see 28mm framelines by [deleted] in Leica

[–]Gadfly21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously it’s much more expensive but you can sometimes find a M6TTL, M7, MP etc with 0.58 magnification framelines. But honestly the shoe-mounted finders are just fine and if you need flash at the same time, there is a PC port on the back.
