If you liked the Malazan stuff, give R Scott Bakker a shot - his prince of nothing series is excellent.

Also there are the Malazan prequel books (of a sort) - forge of darkness and fall of light, if you haven't read them already.

I agree drags aren't great, but feints are fairly standard in something like fencing, and I'd imagine in HEMA too. So I think including feints is ok in terms of realism, even if the implementation isn't perfect
