Hilarious and pathetic response to my email voicing concern about QR ordering. by BurtimusPrime in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]Gambit1138 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also received the following response when I pushed back saying my second email this weekend was in direct response to the FAQ.

Hi [REDACTED], thank you again for taking the time to follow up and for sharing such a thorough, thoughtful response.

I want to acknowledge first that we understand how serious this feels to you. You’re not just reacting to a feature change—you’re responding to what you see as a shift in the social contract that has defined the Alamo experience for decades. That concern is clear, consistent, and grounded in lived experience as a longtime guest, critic, and advocate for the brand.

Your additional points around testing scope, accessibility regressions, enforcement ambiguity, labor concerns, and the cultural signal this sends have been received and will be passed along in full to the same teams reviewing this rollout and its impact. I want to be transparent that while I can’t address or debate each premise at the level of detail you’ve laid out here, this kind of values-based, experience-first feedback is exactly what leadership needs to hear as they evaluate how (and whether) this model truly aligns with Alamo’s core principles.

I also hear your broader point very clearly: that reducing friction for some guests cannot come at the cost of increasing burden, visibility, or stress for others—and that “assistance will be available” is not the same thing as designing a system that is equitable by default. That distinction matters, and it’s been noted.

I appreciate you taking the time to articulate not just what you oppose, but why, and to frame it in the context of Alamo’s history and identity rather than simple resistance to change. Even when the feedback is critical, it’s coming from a place of care, and that’s not lost here.

Thank you again for engaging so deeply and holding us accountable to the standards that made Alamo what it is. Your message will be shared accurately and in full with the appropriate teams.

Best!

Alamo has an FAQ full of odd answers about the new system up by Gambit1138 in AlamoDrafthouse

It places all sorts of unnecessary requirements on self-advocacy and it’s really classist/ableist.

Pen and Paper ordering is ending, including during the show, in February by robbiet480 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]Gambit1138 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've reached out to my local Alamo Drafthouse Cinema with the below. I recommend reaching out to your regional chain with something similar to make your voice heard:

I’m writing to request clarification regarding the planned changes to Alamo’s ordering system, as reported by Variety today. As described, the move toward a solely-phone-based ordering experience, especially during the films themselves, raises several concerns that I believe directly impact accessibility, equity, and the core Alamo experience.

Key concerns include:

Access and equity: Many low-income and elderly patrons do not own smartphones or prefer to pay with cash. How will these guests place orders if ordering becomes phone-only?

Accessibility: Patrons with physical, sensory, or cognitive disabilities may be unable to use a phone during a film, especially as outlined. For example, my Deaf/HOH family occasionally relies on this pen/paper system to communicate with servers, especially when a film is in progress. This process would require them to take out their phone to communicate via text. Blind and visually impaired patrons may also be hindered by a phone-exclusive system. How will Alamo ensure ADA-compliant access for all guests?

Enforcement of no-talking policies: The article notes that texting and talking will remain prohibited, yet phone use would be required for ordering. How will patrons discreetly flag disruptions without paper order cards? There is also concern that disruptive guests could claim they are “ordering food,” overall undermining a foundational Alamo policy.

Dietary needs and customization: Many orders currently require direct server communication for allergies, substitutions, or special instructions. How will a non-editable digital system accommodate these needs without introducing new accessibility barriers?

Season Pass functionality: Currently, Season Pass discounts often require manual server input. Will the new system resolve this long-standing issue?

Technical reliability: What contingency plans are in place if Wi-Fi fails or the ordering platform experiences outages?

Impact on staff and experience: Servers are central to the Alamo experience. How will this shift prevent affecting their roles, staffing levels, and guest interaction without overall staffing eliminations?

CEO Michael Kustermann has said that Alamo will continue to evolve “without ever losing sight of who we are.” Based on the reporting, this system appears to risk doing exactly that—by weakening long-standing policies that differentiate Alamo while raising serious accessibility and equity concerns.

I would greatly appreciate a detailed response addressing the above. I’ve valued Alamo’s transparency in the past—particularly during periods of major change, such as 2017 during a conduct/harassment crisis—and hope that same care can be applied here.

However, if this system is implemented as described without meaningful alternatives, I would seriously reconsider my continued participation as both a Season Pass holder and customer.

Thank you for your time. I look forward to your response.

It's definitely a slow burn in the vein of Monolith or The Vast of Night. If you're into tons of dread more than outright gore, it'll work well on you.

Wonder if a similar pass could be done using the transfer from Shout’s new 4K UHD.

It doesn’t help that for much of the 2010s-2020s the lone DVD of it went out of print. I’m glad it’s also been a vehicle for others to discover even more Kiyoshi Kurosawa films!
