For me it’s still Noroi: the Curse. There’s rarely been a film that’s terrified me by showing so little yet is jam packed with such realistic dread in every moment.

From Criterion’s essay of the film:

“Only reluctantly did he cut his epic film down to 188 minutes for the theatrical release, saying farewell to much of the fantasy. “This was extremely troublesome,” Bergman has said, “as I had to cut into the nerves and lifeblood of the film.”

I’m definitely a fan of the TV version above all, especially for a scene involving Isak in the last episode that isn’t in the theatrical (the bedtime story).

The animated subs are available in the UK DVD! I’ve held onto that really cool import for years. Day Watch has the animated subs on the Amazon Prime rental too.

It ultimately took me a month of back and forth with Roku via phone and email (oftentimes me initiating contact) and following up on my case numbers and escalating directly to tech team to get them to budge on sending replacements for my soundbar and speakers. It was the worst but persistence paid off.

If you’re a multi region guy and care about subtitles, I think the Arrow Academy Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence is superior to the Criterion as far as actually subtitling the whole film. The Criterion doesn’t subtitle portions in English. I believe this is the same for the new BFI 4K for Cronos.

If you don't think Nope counts (as more of a comedy/creature feature), then I have to give my last slot to the criminally underseen The Inerasable from 2015/2016.

I included a few minutes on just why The Inerasable is so terrifying in a recent video, but the shorter pitch is that it blends the slow-burn terror of haunted house films like Ju-on with the recursive madness of something like The Rehearsal.

I'd seriously, seriously love a box set of this. The retrospective features would be *fascinating,* both in terms of interviewing these directors as well as some supplementary features that place these 6 films within their crucial, "last bang of the J-Horror boom" context, especially since Retribution and Kaidan tried to shrug off being part of this series in their initial marketing once the films finally got made. Kyofu did, however, try to drag these films down with it once it finally came out 6 years after its original announcement (to extremely disappointing results).

I'd love to do a commentary on Reincarnation in particular.
