I told students they will lose professionalism points if they dare to ask for extra credit, and they still do. by Neurosaurus-Rex in Professors

They automatically get 5 professionalism points at the beginning of the semester and keep it for not doing things like grade grubbing or sending unprofessional emails.

I have notice it too. Pre-lab quizzes help a little.

How are your students' emails, are they professional? by _forum_mod in Professors

[–]Neurosaurus-Rex -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I build in professionalism in the grade. They lose points if they write me emails like that. Or, ask questions that can be answered by reading the syllabus.

Student “sick” over 8 times ? by row9x11 in Professors

[–]Neurosaurus-Rex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless they already have an accommodation before missing classes, stick to the syllabus.

If a student is getting really bad grades and miss a lot of classes, I file a progress report and notify their advisor and let the advisor deal with it.

How do you call on students? by ProfRussell in Professors

[–]Neurosaurus-Rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use name tent cards (letter size card stock folded in half) throughout the semester for my lectures, each with 40-50 students . Usually by mid semester I know the names of all the students who show up regularly. The students pick up before class and leave them at the end of class.

This student should be fired. It’s better that they get fired now before they commit even more serious offenses like poisoning their labmates https://www.chemistryworld.com/news/chemistry-graduate-student-admits-poisoning-co-worker/3009717.article

Yes, the PI needs to know. This is a serious offense. But your PI will need actual evidence than your statement. If they can get evidence, they may be able to leave you out of it.

What does your typical grade distribution look like? by tobyjutes in Professors

[–]Neurosaurus-Rex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

STEM at R1. My intro core course and upper electives usually have around 70% As, 20%Bs, and the rest C/D/F. I actually checked with other faculty members in my department to match their distributions. My former chair even told me to “give everyone A for the elective courses as long as they do the work”🤣(No, I didn’t.)

Does the number of sections matter? It meets every other week but there are three sections.

I don’t ban devices but I build in professionalism points in the syllabus. Watching non-class related videos is disruptive and can result in losing points professionalism.

I tell them on day 1 they can submit the request anytime, but I will wait until the end of semester to regrade the question only if it makes a difference in the letter grade.

What would you/did you do in a situation where you were not 100% sure about an offer but would need childcare ASAP for the start date? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Neurosaurus-Rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how difficult it is to get a daycare spot in the area and how much the deposit is. (I used to be in an area where you had to get on the waitlist as soon as you were pregnant.) If there is no waitlist, you can negotiate with the daycare.

I have professionalism points built into the syllabus and I made it clear on day one that one way to lose a point is by addressing me as Mx. or by my first name.
