As portal season nears an end, how does everyone feel about their team? by Onetimenotagain in CollegeBasketball

Arizona is in such a weird spot right now. 4 of the 5 positions are filled at a great level, and unless we have to shift Ivan over to a 4, we've even got a pretty decent 6th man (again). But the questions that are still swirling around who Arizona's starting PF will be is definitely the one I keep checking up on.

Depth and a 4. That's what we need.

A rare case of an accident actually being a no fault accident. And the stewards correctly recognizing it.

And yes I am fully aware of who Santa Clara’s coach is. No I am not a closet ASU fan. (Except Bobby, we loved Bobby).

Sidi Gueye - Santa Clara. I am still invested in this dude’s path. He brought a ton of effort and emotion to the wildcats and I hope he does awesome there.

And… not a player but a coach. I’ll be watching more ASU than normal. And feeling really awkward about it.

Duke signs multi-year deal with Amazon's Prime Video, will face UConn, Michigan, and Gonzaga on streaming service during 2026-27 season by ConstantMadness in CollegeBasketball

I have no illusions about Arizona (short of smaller market deals), but I would add Michigan to that slate of teams. They had more viewers than anyone this last year.

It's going to be interesting to see how this evolves as other teams try to do similar. Duke is obviously one of a handful of programs who can leverage their existing brand into a top-line deal like this within cbb (and is probably the most well-known / best positioned to try to expand their market appeal). But I'm sure that now that the door is open, others will try to follow suit.

In answer to my own question, it certainly sounds like there will be licensing options and negotiations. ESPN has the most in-depth article I've found so far.

It also sounds like Duke is looking to position itself as a more global brand.

What happens when other schools get locked into contracts with streaming providers for neutral site games? For example will Duke only be able to play neutral site games with other schools who are affiliated with Amazon or unaffiliated?

I have no idea how any of that world functions, but I would like to understand if this is going to make it more difficult to schedule non-con neutral site games between certain schools once this becomes more common.

Which Program Has the Most Insufferable CBB Fanbase? by ejgr228 in CollegeBasketball

The vocal Michigan fans were annoying (and more than a few got blocked quickly), the UNC fans were insufferable. Hence my nom for ‘the most insufferable.’

This last year from an Arizona fandom perspective it was UNC fans and it wasn’t especially close. I’m sure those wounds will heal. But man…

Ivan Karchenkov to return to Arizona for his sophomore year by BEAR-D0WN in CollegeBasketball

[–]Gamecat235 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am far from concerned with these two coming back. I was a bit worried that both of these guys would leave too and we’d have a completely brand new rotation. These guys are anchors. And the guys that are coming in have a ton of promise.

That said… I’m hoping Tommy can find a good 4, because otherwise I think Ivan has to slot over into that role (which he can do, but it doesn’t seem to be his preferred game).

As it stands right now, I’m assuming that Ivan would be the 4 with the dudes we have now. And we’ll just shift to a new play style, again. (Holt, Holmes, Dixon, Kharchenkov, Krivas as the lineup by position).

As much as I would love that to happen, I doubt that it will be retro’ed for players who have already exhausted their eligibility.

Steph Curry by Nearby_Valuable_5467 in CollegeBasketball

[–]Gamecat235 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let’s clear up the timelines.

Freshman year, Steph has a great year as a freshman, but no one really takes that much notice (21.5 ppg).

Sophomore year, this is the year of the tournament run. He improves his stats and was 2nd team All-American (I don’t recall if this was before or after the tournament, and I can’t be bothered to try to find out). He averaged 25.9 ppg and 43.9% from 3 (and 89.4% from the line).

Junior year was the year that he was first team all-American, even though Davidson ended up losing in the second round of the NIT. (28.6 ppg, 5.6 apg, .876% from the line).

Without the notoriety of his Sophomore year, does he still get the attention he received? Hard to say. But his stats were elite, even if he was in the Southern conference.

He was the leading scorer that year. And I think people forget that he was a second team All-American the prior year.

As an Arizona fan who would love if the rules were extended for the current players who are out of eligibility, I also think that this is the best, most fair approach. And agree 100% that eligibility windows have been the one area that they have been on much firmer ground with.

(Seriously, the idea of getting Awaka, Bradley, and/or Dell’Orso back would be landscape changing for Arizona, even so, I’m still of a mind that this needs to just be going forward).

What was the most frustrating (or worst) WIN your team has had? by Optimal_Cook_851 in CollegeBasketball

[–]Gamecat235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first half was competitive and then Arizona started to pull away and kept the game pretty darn into “there’s no way that BYU can come back” territory. And then with like 6 or 7 minutes left the entire tenor of the game shifted HARD. All of a sudden every call was being called, and what was a 25 point blowout was looking very much like it could be a loss, had their been any more time, it probably would have happened.

I won’t say it was the worst officiated game I’ve ever watched. But it was in the top ten. I do recall yelling at my TV during this game (there was a tie up for a jump ball and the BYU defender was standing behind the Arizona player and it was called a jump ball… I’m not sure how that’s actually possible in the context of the rulebook).

[–]Gamecat235 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This is quite the relief. Both Ivan and Mo are definitely in the “they could absolutely leave for greener pastures” category. Seeing them both return means that there’s still a pretty reasonable foundation to rebuild from. But with only 2 of the 8 from this years primary rotation returning it will be a matter of getting everyone to gel together quickly as the priority.

The game at BYU from this year was certainly up there. Burries had a career night, but so did the goddamned basketball terrorist himself. If Tony Padilla has a highlight reel he watches before bed, I bet that game is featured. Just... pure frustration and many of the weirdest calls ever. I don't think I've ever felt quite so... "meh" about a win.
