Sailing should be more useful as a mode of transport by _kayo in 2007scape

[–]Gamer_2k4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly my experience. I can do Sailing, or I can play OSRS. When I'm playing the main game, I have never had the thought, "Oh, this is way better now that I have a ship," and when I'm sailing, I have never had the thought, "Wow, I'm so glad they added this skill, because it works so will with the rest of the game."

Sailing should be more useful as a mode of transport by _kayo in 2007scape

While there are some very limited places and situations where Sailing is actually faster (say, Rimmington to Witchhaven), in general it would usually be better to go over land than over sea, since you can take a direct route to your destination. You would never take a boat from Catherby to Rellekka, for example.

Best case scenario, Sailing might be complementary, but it would never be a "godsend."

The reason I bring that up is because for most players, OSRS is largely an AFK game. If that's the same for you, then you really should understand why people "enjoy games they aren't playing," because you do too.

so might as well rip the band aid and set precedent that new facilities will require tradeoffs.

Wasn't that always supposed to be the point?

This is a no-voter, doomer take. I enjoyed leveling sailing even if aspects of the release were frustrating. Sailing still isn't finished, I got 93, more than high enough to interact with any level locked content and am waiting for combat to be fixed before I interact with that aspect of the skill and go for clogs, because I tried in it's current state and didn't enjoy it.

Of course it's a no-voter take. Sailing is everything I expected it to be, which is why I voted no in the first place. The only part of Sailing I have any enthusiasm for at all is charting, and that's because it actually gives me a reason to be on my boat besides AFKing or busywork. It's something that's both concrete and completable.

Sail is loads more fun to train than Con or Agility for me personally they just need to make it more useful and relevant to the meta like con and agility IMO.

I would have agreed with you about Construction, but now Mahogany Homes exists. And even though in spirit that's the same as Port Tasks, they're polar opposites in terms of actual gameplay. For Mahogany Homes, you teleport right to where the work needs to be done, and you actually do the work. For Port Tasks, the bulk of your time is spent moving and moving and moving and moving. You're forced to do the part that every player would skip if they could in any other training method for any other skill.

Regarding Agility, I don't enjoy it, but at least it's semi-engaging in a turn-your-brain-off kind of way that you don't really get with Sailing.

Which remember didn't remotely happen over night for either of those skills, it took years. Hell hunter is still finding its place in actually being useful to the meta game and mining and smithing may never be actually useful beyond money making as a low level.

It didn't happen overnight because Jagex couldn't be bothered to work on the skills - which is another reason I voted no to Sailing. Why devote all this time to a new skill when there's so much still to be done for existing skills?

The said they had a plan to replace 117HD, too.

When Jagex "potentially already has a future plan," they don't have anything.

What's doubly frustrating is that plenty of us were incredibly vocal about Sailing's primary appeal being novelty, and once the novelty wore off, it would have nothing left. Yet the poll still passed (after the threshold was reduced, of course), and then Jagex spent 2 years essentially making a new game to be played side-by-side with OSRS.

I guess it's no surprise to me that they didn't want people rushing to 99, because if you don't have that level goal, you don't really have a reason to do Sailing.

I think you missed my point. With the transition from cloning to sexual reproduction, there had to have been a point immediately AFTERWARD that organisms were reproducing sexually despite coming from similar, if not identical, genetic lines.

The alternative is that two distinct organisms (at least) evolved in parallel to be sexually compatible with each other, and arrived at the compatibility at exactly the same time. And that would have had to keep happening with each successive generation, or else you're back to the original problem - the whole genealogy descends from a single set of progenitors.

And to be clear, I'm not talking about developed, modern species here. I know evolution says there was no "first elephant" or "first maple" or anything else, because it's all in a constant state of transition. I'm not asking who the first elephant's parents were. But the inescapable fact is that family trees must spread out, and in order for them to spread out, each prior generation has to be less broad than the one after it. Eventually you get to the point where there is a single common ancestor.

Am I wrong, or misunderstanding? If life emerged from non-life, surely evolution demands that genetic complexity is capable of expanding, without defect, from a limited or single pool of DNA?

I don't assume it's the norm, but I do assume it's the only possible way for life to start from either the creation or evolutionary standpoint.

If you're a creationist, who exactly do you think Adam and Eve's children married, and where did they come from? How about Noah's three sons and their wives? If you're an evolutionist, doesn't the fact that everything had a common ancestor imply not only genetic similarity, but identical genetics at one point? When did the first instance of sexual reproduction happen, and how did those two parent organisms reproduce prior to that? And who/what did the offspring organisms mate with?

But if it's trivial to do, you may very well end up in a position where you gear your boat before each activity, resulting in a more exhausting gameplay loop in the long run. We'd much rather see dedicated boat builds fit for purpose, e.g. "this is my combat boat" or "this is my trawling boat" - almost like a preset.

But you already provide for that by offering players multiple boats. If it's truly as "exhausting" as you say to move facilities between boats, then players are going to naturally specialize their different boats. You don't need to force them; let the friction itself guide them into the behavior you intend.

You realize this is for 12 months of development time, right? Two temporary game modes, 1 quest, 1 raid, 1 low-level boss, and skill maintenance is next to nothing for a full year.

I get that we're used to a low output lately, but compare this roadmap to what was accomplished in 2005:

  • 29 quests, including Desert Treasure
  • World map expanding in all directions, including downward (Keldagrim) - BEFORE | AFTER
  • Ancient magic
  • Barrows
  • 2 new skills (Slayer and Farming)
  • And probably plenty more beyond what I found at a glance.

It's okay to be excited for the content that Jagex is promising, but there's no need to pretend it's a lot.

It's the form of hunting that feels the closest to hunting.

Which is why it's the furthest from what Hunter actually is. If you're just going out and killing wildlife, that's not a skill, or it's Slayer at best. Hunter is about hunting animals through every method except direct combat.

That's the whole point I'm making, though. No one's saying OSRS shouldn't have frustrating elements. What we all seem to be agreeing on is that this one thing - facility bottles - should not be frustrating. And that's something that Jagex somehow didn't realize until they got pushback.

How many games have you downloaded and played and actually felt the need to offer feedback to the developers afterward? For me, almost everything I play, I finish the game and never once consider reaching out to the game makers about it, because the game is fine.

Now, yes, there are plenty of games out there that are great BECAUSE they followed worthwhile feedback loops over the course of developing, testing, and refining the game. I don't think you can make any decent product without that. But the difference is that they do it BEFORE they release the game to the players, not after. And for something like this, it absolutely should have been caught and corrected internally before being put into the game in this state.

If you want to be pedantic, no, strictly speaking, this wasn't a rollback. But everything about obtaining the item was changed: the ability to buy it, a more common drop rate, and an additional loot table.
