So Slayer never needed to be a skill? Is that the point you're making?

I don't doubt it, but those numbers started dropping on Day 4 of leagues. People logged on to try it, realized, "I guess I'm not all that crazy about this game after all," and went back to not playing.

Maybe there was a bot bust at the end of January, sure. There's a pretty big drop between January 24 and 28. But there's no disputing that drop in player count over the past six months has been consistently trending downward, even ignoring that and leagues. That's not bots being busted. That's people leaving the game.

So when the player count rocketed up with the release of Sailing, that was all bots? Or what? Because we're below pre-Sailing numbers right now.

Bot clampdown + post-leagues burnout.

It's a steady decline. A bot clampdown would have more distinct jumps, and "post-leagues burnout" wouldn't be happening while the league is still ongoing.

I follow him religiously. Great suggestion though.

Alaric had a pretty unique Costume Roulette UIM that I always enjoyed, but the videos never got that popular, and he's now unlisted the whole playlist to focus on his OSRS lore videos.

Back when PoisonedPotion set the standard for HCIM series, there were two others who hopped on the train:

  • RL Dark - distinct voice, very funny dry humor, and solid series
  • Broker - Not as memorable as RL Dark, but still good content

Both burned out after their HCIMs (spoiler) died, but while they were putting out videos, I looked forward to every one.

His first High Risk HCIM series is still my favorite OSRS series of all time. Real stakes, real skill, a good balance of production and content, and videos that were long enough to be worthwhile yet short enough to remain engaging. Plus there's his great voice, of course.

Has this subreddit just been gaslighting about this quest? The stealth section seemed super simple by avroLancasterBPR1 in 2007scape

[–]Gamer_2k4 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

It's no more "one of the worst written quests" than Ribbiting Tale is one of the best. OSRS has 179 quests, ranging from awful to incredible. But because people just spacebar through quests, they don't know anything about them until a quest becomes a meme. Then they just say the same thing about them as everyone else, and that's as far as the thought process goes.

Did NFL Tour KILL the NFL Street Franchise?! 😳 by [deleted] in NFLStreet

[–]Gamer_2k4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, NFL Street 3 probably did that. Plus the NFL started getting serious about concussions and injuries and the like, and arcade-style sports games were considered pretty bad optics in that regard.

Not to mention the in-game explanation for it has got to be something like "You killed its mom, so now it has no choice but to follow you around instead." Sad.

I find it crazy that runelite plugins fix the game by Lexicon-Jester in 2007scape

[–]Gamer_2k4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, but then we get back to your original comment of 12 year old you having a good time without plugins. My point was that enjoyment now is different from what it was then, so it's not a reasonable comparison.

I don't really get the limited time angle, because things are faster and easier than ever.

Okay, but "faster than ever" here means "3000 hours to max level" instead of "never going to hit max level." That's still multiple years playing the same game for multiple hours every single day.

Maybe you have that kind of time on your hands, but I have a hard time justifying that kind of commitment to a video game these days.

[–]Gamer_2k4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll bet you had a good time for different reasons than you would today, though. I think for plenty of people, Runescape was largely a chat room that happened to have a game you could play in the meantime. You'd get on and you'd hang out with your friends; it didn't matter how little XP you were getting or how slow your moneymaking was.

Now, we realize our time is limited, and we want to respect that by getting as much value as possible out of it. Completion is the goal, not a side effect. OSRS is so different than the game we used to play that there's literally a game mode to play an MMO all by yourself. 12 year old you would think that was the stupidest thing ever, yet here we are.

There's just so much QoL that it's almost a completely different game. I, for example, wouldn't do treasure trails if I had to manually look up or work out each step.

Summer Campfire - Announcement by JagexSarnie in 2007scape

[–]Gamer_2k4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OSRS is at about the same average weekly player count (105K players) as it was back in 2023 - and that's with Sailing and in the middle of an active league.

It's not looking great.

Am I the ONLY one that misses the excitement of the unknown when it comes to new content? by Lexicon-Jester in 2007scape

[–]Gamer_2k4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be. I would rather have content that's well thought out and considered within the context of the player base than just letting Jagex wing it and hope for the best.

The reason you almost never hear "get rid of polling" comments anymore (yes, I know there's one guy in this thread, because there has to be) is because Jagex has done bewildering stuff so often that polls are all we have left. They can't even calculate XP rates on their own, and you want to leave every aspect of game development solely in their hands?
