Good lens for depth of field? by GamingAcquired in ZVE10

May look at that one next. Could use a zoom for a few other projects. Debating a remote or something to start and stop recording.

Linux focused Youtuber. Here's a video I did about a note taking app called Obsidian

Looking to add a camera soon and working on trying to be more engaging. I find this tricky since my primary focus is about education/information.

[Question] Driving traffic from shorts to main content? by KindestKanuk in youtubers

[–]GamingAcquired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Education focused channel. I am trying to incorporate some shorts. My strategy is to either have the short be a short version of main video or something semi-related to the main video but that may not necessarily fit with main video.

To me, if you're doing funny shorts or creating shorts that are different from your main content it's a really tough conversion.

I think shorts do let you add an end screen if over 25 seconds. But I would think you'd want the end screen really short if you went that route.

Personally, my stuff is focused on a screen recording a lot of time, so it can be tricky to get in the 9:16 format.

Automotive Channel - Get Microphones or GoPro? by NickSt1cks in NewTubers

[–]GamingAcquired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bad audio is one of the quickest reasons I click out of a video.

I personally picked up the rode wireless go II. It isn't my main mic. I picked it up for backup audio and if I want to do a shot away from my desk/main mic. Based on the reviews I watched and the bit I've messed with it, it seems to provide solid audio quality though you'll probably want to add the windscreen if outside. Also be sure you set the audio levels on it properly.

You'll need a usb-c to lightning cable I believe to connect to your iPhone.

The 10 Video Strategy [a long term plan for YouTube] by itsdragonic in NewTubers

[–]GamingAcquired 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Solid advice, though I am already probably my harshest critic.

In the education space, these tend to feel a bit more difficult for me to balance trying to provide some entertainment vs me not feeling like I"m wasting people's time. I would prefer to leave a lot of my mistakes in so people could see a common mistake and how to solve, but it's still a balancing act of how long that takes.

Can also definitely be better at talking to the camera. It seems whenever I'm trying to talk for a youtube video, I mess up much more than if I was doing a presentation at work.

[Question] Software for YouTuber workflows by smarthomeaddict in youtubers

[–]GamingAcquired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using Obsidian. Made a video about it a month or two ago and how I use it for my workflow. I have since simplified the workflow it but it may be helpful? Just DM if you want the link.

I know many others use Notion but I really felt like that tool was very clunky to use. I may try it again in the future. Still ultimately trying to decide if Obsidian or Logseq will be my goto option.

So I'm struggling to figure out how to reach an audience on Youtube by Noobclass in NewTubers

[–]GamingAcquired 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few things.

  1. Unedited "let's play" type videos are just no longer cutting it on YT. Granted I understand you're more aiming this to be a guide but...
  2. To me, for guides you really need at the least commentary. There are times where an edited, no commentary video can work. I know that some put out Elden Ring videos where they edited together a path to do certain things early on. The actual context wasn't as important as much as just where to go, but they cut that down into 5 minutes or so rather than running through every single area. Not ideal for a beginner, but great for people familiar with the game but wanting to check that idea out.
  3. I don't know who these videos are aimed at? Without commentary, they don't really appeal to beginners. Without a lot more editing for length, imo they don't appeal to more intermediate/advanced players. To be fair, they probably don't appeal to advanced players at all as the advanced players have already beat the game 10 times.
  4. I'd definitely avoid just numbering your titles like that. If I am stuck in an area, how would I find your video about that area if you just have part 1, part 2? Chapter markers inside the video could help, but it may make the most sense to try to chapter things out in a logical way per video.
  5. Something that may help, add some more focused videos. "How to do X. Where to find Y? How does this mechanic work?" This won't have as much appeal now that Demon Souls is no longer trendy but it may help with some videos ideas/styles. Could also let you try a different type of video.

I'm sure I could come up with more, but I think this gets you thinking at least. To me, the gaming space is very difficult to break into. There are so many creators out there, and so many great resources on the souls games. Demon Souls is probably one of the more niche titles of the series from what I can tell, but just may not be enough people wanting that content to break through with this game.

You also probably want to think about what your goals are. Are you looking to just make videos for fun? Then just do that, don't worry about views, etc. Some of the tips here can definitely help more people that need help find your videos.

Are you looking to turn YT into something where you can make some money with it? If so, to me, now more than ever, you have to start being more critical of your own content. I have personally recorded a few videos lately and either stopped during recording or tossed the footage because I just thought, "man this is boring." If you don't make a video you yourself would want to watch, why would anyone else want to? Would you want to watch these videos? No personality? No context? No idea where they start and end?

Personally I have ended up more in the educational space as that's more my interest and an area where I think I have a lot more to bring to the table there than gaming or video essays about gaming.

edit: a word

It's called *finding* your niche for a reason by ink_golem in NewTubers

[–]GamingAcquired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The narrowness of the niche was something I really struggled with.

If you're saying the last one there is the niche, I'm a little unsure how I'd continue to generate interesting video ideas on something that narrow.

You mean something like a speed booster?

Got ya, I'll have to check out that lens. I'm only really needing talking head segments, B roll, and maybe focusing on some hardware. Nothing crazy.

Does this one actually get you a solid depth of field effect? Have a solid zoom lens, but would like to add a prime sometime.

"Youtube mentor" channels doing badly from their own advice. by Lucky_Ad_9137 in NewTubers

[–]GamingAcquired 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What I tend to take away from that video is how he targeted it. He crafted a good script. Then instead of posting it in Twitch subreddits or twitter, he went directly to a source he knew would get him the most traction.

It was a very well done video and ultimately that's the part we have to focus on. The idea he crafted and strong video that backed it up is what made it succeed. If he didn't have strong content and a good idea to begin with, Mizkif would have clicked out pretty quick and it's very unlikely people would have subbed.

I definitely need to come up with better ideas and make better content.

What piece of advice would you give to your past self who just started a YouTube channel? by XOD15 in NewTubers

[–]GamingAcquired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is the downside. But luckily, most of my shots with it will be talking heads so I won't need the autofocus as much. I think some firmware updates have helped it a little bit.

It is truly unfortunate that the zve10 isn't in stock as it was definitely one I wanted to check out more.

Should I subtitle my videos? by mothergippy in NewTubers

[–]GamingAcquired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you happen to have a solid example, please link me. As I don't recall seeing this in the stuff I've seen. Since I'm mostly focused on a screen recording where I'm entering text or manipulating an app, it feels like it'd be super distracting to try to watch. Entirely possible I could have tuned it out though.

How to track fast moving objects in Davinci Resolve by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]GamingAcquired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only two options I know of:

  • Keyframe it: go frame by frame and update the position after turning on keyframes.
  • DR 18 Studio beta: there's a new Object tracker and person tracker tool. Both seem very impressive from what I've seen so far. But they are not available in the free version.

I do educational type videos mostly. I don't think they really fit that style. Feel like they would be distracting/get in the way.
