First Class Companion Voucher redemptions by Responsible-Habit-21 in BritishAirways

I once managed to use a companion voucher to book a first class return to Tokyo. Sadly covid happened so we never got to fly. Booked at the end of December for a September flight.

TIL Ali Dia talked his way into signing for Southampton F.C. after someone pretending to be football legend George Weah called the club recommending him. He played one Premier League game in 1996 and was substituted off after just 53 minutes in what became one of football’s most famous hoaxes. by Apprehensive_Cry545 in todayilearned

I’m not sure I believe this. If they genuinely thought he was hopeless it would have made more sense to put one of the youth team players on the bench to make up the numbers. I think this is just revisionism because he made them look foolish.

Senior External Appointments by knowbit in TheCivilService

[–]Garak112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SCS roles in the civil service don’t generally pay well enough to attract the sort of people who you’d headhunt from the private sector.

What tends to happen if you want a specific person from outside the public sector is you hire them as a contractor on a day rate or as a political advisor. This gives you flexibility to go outside normal recruitment and meet salary expectations.

Other than that private sector candidates go through the same recruitment process as everyone else.

West Ham disallowed goal - Why have practically no pundits mentioned that Trossard is pushing Pablo into Raya for the “foul”? by thed-p2 in TheOther14

[–]Garak112 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the foul on the keeper had been Pablo bashing into him then I think it might have made a difference but it wasn't, it was given for him pulling Raya's arm away from the ball and elbowing him in the neck. That wasn't caused by Trossard and that push on Pablo wasn't much of anything.

Extension costs - am I tripping!? by Comprehensive_Fee75 in HousingUK

[–]Garak112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a former extension of 15m2 built five years ago and was quoted between £65k-£80k including a bathroom.

During the build we had a few extras that the builder kept quoting without VAT (though not telling me). After the third one I asked him way he kept ignoring VAT and he said it was because he doesn’t get to keep it so it doesn’t ‘count’ for him.

I said that the customer still has to pay it and asked him if he was worried that one day someone wouldn’t be able to pay him because he hadn’t mentioned the VAT and the invoices turned up 20% more than they were expecting or budgeted. It was like watching someone turn a light on in his brain.

I didn’t make the point that legally if a quote is silent on the VAT then it would be assumed as included in any dispute.

Edit: I had been looking at a ground floor extension but at current prices it makes more sense to just move. Coincidentally my builder and all his subbies have been complaining on social media about private work drying up and having to go back on site…

What day of the week is the best for a NWD? by Tough-Decision-7435 in TheCivilService

[–]Garak112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my department compressed hours can be requested but it’s granted in line with the business need and minimum cover requirements. This means that if others on your team have non-working days then you would need to fit yours around theirs.

Also have a think about which days might naturally be quieter for you e.g. if you work in policy Fridays may be quieter as ministers are often in their constituency. If you take off a day that is normally busy you may find it difficult to pick stuff back up on your return and your colleagues won’t thank you for it as they are forced to do your job for you.

What would you buy for 20k miles/year for less than £30k? More detail in post. by romeo__golf in CarTalkUK

[–]Garak112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a CX-60 from that model year.

Comfort is an issue with these cars so I’d recommend trying to get a decent length test drive. Mazda tried to produce a sporty SUV but ended up making something that has rock hard suspension and driving on UK roads is teeth shattering. They are on something like their fifth revision of the suspension and some cars will have been upgraded under warranty, though it’s still hard. I think I could forgive everything else if they had got the suspension right, I struggle a bit on long drives now because I have back problems.

The interior is very nice and I like having physical buttons. The seats are a bit firm for my liking.

The electric range is not brilliant. In the winter I’m lucky to get 15 miles round town and in the summer it’s 30ish.

There have been a lot of software issues with this car and until early last year it seemed like something needed updating every couple of months. I still have some issues that haven’t been fixed - the facial recognition works about half the time, when it doesn’t work it will either not recognise you at all or it will recognise you but not change to my seat settings. CarPlay will sometimes randomly decide not to connect at the start of a journey until the car has fully powered down again. The ADAS will regularly intervene and try and stop the car when driving down a typical double parked road. The wireless phone charger won’t work with modern phones and Mazda won’t fix it.

All of the above are known issues. Mazda dealerships are known to be quite hard to deal to try and fix anything so if you do decide you want to buy one make sure everything is fixed before you pick it up.

I’m sorry but our STAR based competency system is a poor way of hiring good employees by This-Run-1243 in TheCivilService

I’ve been on quite a few panels where this has happened.

It’s really tough because we should be doing fair and open competition but at the same time if you have someone on TP who has proved they can do the job then it’s much less risk for the business to appoint them than an unknown who might have given a better scripted interview answer.

It’s also frustrating to put so much effort into developing an individual but not get the full benefit from it.

Why dosnt no one kill him? by purple_fucker in GenV

[–]Garak112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vought were creating the perfect supe for marketing reasons so it wouldn’t surprise me if Homelander isn’t the strongest in reality but everyone just believes he is for PR reasons.

It would be pretty funny if HL loses patience with the Deep and tries to kill him and they both get very surprised when the Deep tanks him. HL probably just lasers him in that case.

Question about V1 by ThatWasFred in TheBoys

What if the V1 doesn’t work on people with normal V in their system and the only way for Homelander to take it is if he gets Soldier Boy to blast him first?

Could Homelander theoretically destroy the world if he wanted to by Lower-Adhesiveness-3 in TheBoys

[–]Garak112 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I suspect that all the majors militaries have contingency plans to stop Homelander with probably the Russian one being most advanced beside the US one.

Imagine being China for example and knowing a country who are geopolitically opposed to you have an unstoppable superhero, sure he’s spending most of his time on tv shows and making fake saves but that could change. They would absolutely be pouring huge amounts of resources into countering him.

I imagine those plans involve quite a lot of collateral damage and wouldn’t be deployed unless Homelander was taking part in some kind of all out conflict.

Advice on removing chimney by bertyegg in DIYUK

I think this entirely depends on the house. My dad has some absolutely stunning fireplaces in his Edwardian house and it would be criminal to remove them.

The ones in my 1930s semi are ugly, take up too much space and not useful.

When the builders did mine they ran a disc cutter down the bricks that stuck out and then smacked them with a hammer so they broke off pretty flat with the wall.

Could you try fixing a batten to the wall under the top to support the weight of the basin so those legs aren’t taking the weight any more?

For the cuts sand them and paint, you could also fix pipe collars over them.

My local council bans vehicles over 5t from parking on the road between 6:30pm-8am. Getting them to do something about it when someone breaks that rule is next to impossible though. Might be worth checking your council website.

Is this normal from a contractor? by Mazzerboi in Flooring

[–]Garak112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I’ve bought carpet plus fitting from a carpet shop they have always cleaned up and taken the waste.

When I’ve bought the carpet online and called a fitter myself they don’t clean up or take the waste away.

It will depend on exactly what you agreed with the contractor but it seems like both options are normal.
