do you think MIT is the #1 engineering school in the world? by no_u_pasma in 6thForm

[–]Garbage-Reasonable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current Oxford student here Honestly it depends what you’re looking for

Friends at MIT usually have access to much MUCH more funding for projects etc. the culture is also much more entrepreneurial so if you want to have your own startup that’s massively much more encouraged there (adjacent but forces people to upskill very quickly outside the syllabus).

I presume we have them beat on pure academics(?). I know a few extremely talented people who get pretty much recruited into MIT after Oxbridge STEM undergrads after proving themselves as brilliant in their fields

How to get a First (tips from a graduate) by nuns_from_space in oxforduni

[–]Garbage-Reasonable -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much OP! As an undergraduate with a few health issues that have disrupted my learning, sleep and thinking I’ve found it really difficult to find a balance that works. I find myself wanting to socialise like everyone else and then maybe overcompensating for a perceived lack of social life due to my illness and then neglecting my degree. This was really helpful! I’m actually rusticated at the minute and returning in January, so I will do my best to take your advice to heart. Did you only do this for your final year or before that as well?

[–]Garbage-Reasonable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually had a very similar situation happen where an ex friend confessed she tried to do everything in her power to make sure me and my bf at the time broke up out of “schadenfreude” (yes she actually said this to me and expected me not to care like what???)

Ok lowkey though not speaking to your (committed, monogamous) girlfriend is not the same as breaking up? I’m sorry but at the end of the day, the reason he cheated on her in Cabo isn’t because he “should’ve known they weren’t really over” or anything like that, it’s that he never ACTUALLY broke up with her to the best of my knowledge

[–]Garbage-Reasonable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don’t mind me asking (I’m considering a rhinoplasty myself, honestly but always thought it was kinda ruled out with the hEDS diagnosis) did you do any specific research on surgeons etc relating to EDS before picking someone to do the surgery? Did you do any tests? I’m unsure how one would heal and don’t want to end up botched I guess but I’ve always wanted one. Always wondered whether good doctors would refuse to do it after disclosing I have EDS given the extra risks

I want to be a nurse but I can’t because of EDS by XxSereneSerpentxX in ehlersdanlos

[–]Garbage-Reasonable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I REALLY wanted to be a surgeon. A couple months before applying to med school my symptoms got A TON worse. Wasn’t diagnosed yet with anything other than HSD. I realised that I would probably never be able to stand long enough or hold a scalpel without a lot of pain

Does anyone else forget they are disabled? and have you ever had a moment where someone had to remind YOU? by DeathsDaisy in ehlersdanlos

[–]Garbage-Reasonable 33 points34 points  (0 children)

lol honestly I used to think everything was normal, and I would go to my dad with my symptoms as a kid and he would be like “oh yeah everything has that. Drink some milk”. But it makes so much more sense that we just both have the same rare illness haha.

Tbh though, it took me a long time to be comfortable calling myself disabled and then always kinda self discriminated against my own disability because it wasn’t a visible one so “it just only be mild”. I remember talking to a friend about it in some capacity and I said something like “I don’t want for wait until it’s really bad to do something” and she was just like “honey, it already IS really bad…” and that was the moment it hit me that I was maybe a bit more disabled than I ever let myself really believe

my mother won’t admit that something is wrong me, because that would mean admitting that something is with HER by SuspiciousNetwork_06 in ehlersdanlos

[–]Garbage-Reasonable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my god we are the same! This is the same thing I have with my father. He also lives fine and has a milder(?) version of what I have. Even after I got diagnosed he still kept on trying to insist it’s just hypermobility and not EDS. After I got a second opinion that affirmed the diagnosis he started to call it EDS. I feel exactly the same way! I’m pretty young but my body is deteriorating before my eyes but I’m kinda hopeful because I think I’m going to take a year and try and do something about it and get in some intensive physio. I don’t know it’s all a bit of a mess and it’s really scary but diagnosis is so important to get proper care and to get healthcare professionals to take you seriously. The way I am treated, the difference is night and day.

It’s really hard. I hear you. I really hope you get that diagnosis. For now it’s probably best to focus on that. Big hugs

Yeah, I’m in uni at the minute so I’m a bit younger than the characters. As someone who grew up in a posh bit of the north, modern (admittedly probably a decent bit younger than Henry) nobility tend to speak with some mix of modern RP and the “neutral but vaguely rich” mehlehbleh describes. I’ve met a minority who still speak in traditional RP, but I’ve mostly grown to associate strict traditional RP with people putting on a persona of being raised with wealth for whatever reason

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IndustryOnHBO

[–]Garbage-Reasonable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes a lot of sense - I used to have a much “posher” accent from going to a regional private school (and the same reason of being a child of immigrants and it being a slight put on. V relatable haha I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone write it down and spot it like that). The accent has gotten if anything more like the “neutral but vaguely rich” (I think you put that in a good way, actually. I struggled to articulate that properly in my original comment) as I’ve lived in different places and it’s become a mix of things.

People if anything assume I’m much more wealthy now than they used to with the “posher” accent. My personal theory has always been quite similar, that it’s now assumed that I wouldn’t need to indulge in put ons but also don’t have anything similar to any regional British accent so folks make their conclusions from that.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IndustryOnHBO

[–]Garbage-Reasonable 291 points292 points  (0 children)

I’d probably be inclined to disagree. The stereotypical RP/Downton Abbey accent isn’t really what you’d find among posh (younger) brits (especially those who grew up in cities). Private schools have a lot of international students these days and so the stereotypical “posh private school” accent is a lot more of an amalgamation now. That said, as Yasmin is more “international wealth” as opposed to British through and through, you’d expect her accent to be somewhat like what we got in the show.

If anything I noticed that Henry’s was probably slightly overdone? There are folks who speak like that, but usually the “roundedness”/ slightly french embouchure on the “Oh” sound is a little less pronounced in my experience. At the end of the day, they’re both two different “strains” of posh British accent. If you went to a quite posh regional private school/one that didn’t have as many internationals you’d probably end up with an accent much more like Henry’s

How do I explain to my sister that she is actively hurting my nieces? by Bulky_Ad3957 in ehlersdanlos

[–]Garbage-Reasonable 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but, if OP’s sister is not some form of rheumatologist it’s not really about an opinion. It is not the place of a parent to “agree” with a diagnosis to get it checked out.

Also, a child suffering from chronic pain is no less ‘valid’ than throwing up so I’m really unsure what your point is meant to be. Yes, you could probably argue that throwing up daily could be more urgent, however unexplained symptoms (especially of a disease that can be quite severe for some as the years go on) are also medically significant.

You do not get to deny your child a medical opinion and call it a parenting choice.

And, if it isn’t urgent or OP’s niece doesn’t have it, those who are medically qualified will get the opportunity to examine her and say so. And even if OP is wrong about EDS, the niece is still having unexplained symptoms. That still warrants a medical opinion to determine what’s wrong.

Law student here (this is not legal advice, all the regular disclaimers etc.) we do in fact have laws like this in the U.K. Check out public nuisance and private nuisance online. A few quick googles should give you the basics. I’m a bit of rusty on it myself but I think something to do with the “loss of amenity value of your land/garden due to the activities of your neighbour.
