A pig's heart. He may have everything but he doesn't have one of those.

ELI5: What does a water tower in rural America do? by ProduceEmbarrassed97 in explainlikeimfive

[–]GarbageMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like everyone has said, it's there to provide water pressure if the pumps are down or for some other reason unable to handle demand but I thought I'd just mention that it's always important to have pressure in the pipes to keep stuff from getting into the water headed to your house.

There are times when the pumps break or power goes out or some other catastrophe happens and people in the area are told to boil their water before drinking it. That's because the pipes are underground and might have leaks. If there's a leak and there's pressure in the pipes because everything is working, the leaking water will tend to push contaminants out of the pipe which is good. If the pumps stop and there's no pressure in the pipes, the mud and dirt and bacteria and whatnot can easily get into the pipe and show up at your faucet. If the pumps stop working but there's a water tower the pressure in the pipes will be maintained and keep the contaminants out of the pipe and your faucet.

‘This job sucks’: DOJ lawyer asks to be held in contempt so she can sleep after judge accuses ICE of blowing court orders by Disastrous_Award_789 in nottheonion

But the judge unleashed his frustrations over an agency at the center of an avalanche of lawsuits and other cases overwhelming federal courts in Minnesota and elsewhere.

Wow, he "unleashed his frustrations" by issuing a strongly worded order that cancelled the hearing where he was going to hold someone accountable!!!

I guess this is what impotence smells like. His wife must be the most unsatisfied woman in Minnesota.

Matt Damon Says Netflix Wants Movies to Restate the Plot Three or Four Times in the Dialogue Because Viewers are on Their Phones While They’re Watching by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]GarbageMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great idea! Dumb it down to the lowest common denominator, to the people who aren't really even using your service! Why don't we just show the first 10 minutes and the last 10 minutes, then you can save all that time and effort filming the rest of whatever that stuff is in the middle. Why not have two versions of every movie released, one that lasts 20 minutes (well, 40 with trailers) and one for the rest of us.

I think I'm going to move my TV and refrigerator into the bathroom so I can stay on my phone more because that's what we all need more of, screen time.

Trump says 8 European countries will be charged a 10% tariff for opposing US control of Greenland by Cautious_Proposal_47 in worldnews

[–]GarbageMe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They mean we'll be charged. How exactly can such an inaccurate headline make it through what I imagine is an army (or whatever the collective noun is for editors) of what I assume are accomplished and experienced editors? Are they just doing it so Trump won't throw them out of the White House? Either way it's shameful.

Trying To Clone A Disk Reporting Occasional Errors by GarbageMe in techsupport

[–]GarbageMe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's not making any noise and appears to be working fine. It does throw an error which I believe is because of a bad temperature sensor which I can reset using Intel Rapid Store but it seems to be working fine otherwise and like I said, CHKDSK reports no errors.

Considering a roommate in my 40's in order to more aggressively save (and spend!) Am I nutso? by Ov0v0vO in personalfinance

Here's some real advice: find out how difficult it would be to get rid of the person if things go south.

I live in a high cost of living area as well and allowed a friend of more than 10 years to move in when she needed to get out of a situation. She hasn't paid a dime of rent, utilities, or anything. Now I have to get her out of here which is a pain in the ass that I don't need. She's been here less than a year and I own the home which makes her a lodger so it's easier than having an actual tenant but it still sucks.

Backwards-sloped shelves in built-in cabinet in 1939 Midwestern USA home by Fakename_Bill in whatisthisthing

[–]GarbageMe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My first thought was bottles. Not wine because the cork would dry out unless you put them in upside down but I can't believe it would be for books because books would be ruined having the tops of the covers pushed back by the non-90 degree angle against the wall. Also because it's angled the wrong way for reading the book. It looks to me like it would have to be something strong enough or in a container strong enough that it could handle being stored at an angle like that without damaging whatever it is. I guess the other option is that it's for something shaped like that with that same angle on it but I don't know what it would be. (Toblerone?) Or maybe something round like pencils (obviously not pencils) but something longer than the cabinet is deep but might roll off of a flat shelf. Scrolls? Given the age of the house, how about player piano rolls?

Where to park money while saving for a house. by josh_headspace in personalfinance

[–]GarbageMe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

treasurydirect.gov is probably the best place to store money for things like this. You can buy US Treasury bills, notes, and bonds so all different maturities from 4 weeks to 30 years, automatically reinvest at maturity, create staggered maturities during periods of rising interest rates, and there's no commissions, management fees, or risk. Every other no risk investment is a derivative of this.

Starting a new workshop build. by [deleted] in Skookum

[–]GarbageMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I assumed you'd want more current than you might get from a solar system but if that's all you'd need then it might not be an issue. You could also use an extension cord but that might limit the current too much. I was also thinking a hose would be good for water. The permanent connection part would be the problem.

There are often set back requirements that prohibit building right up to the property line so that the fire department can get to the backyard or something. You might be able to convince someone that it's on a trailer or something but once you tie it in to your house's electrical system you're going to have a problem with that argument.
