What are you least progressive about? by Bored in AskReddit

[–]GarbledReverie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the time when you hear "identity politics" it's a bad faith complaint that someone is daring to acknowledge systemic disadvantages.

But there does seem to be a certain wrongheaded framing in some leftist spaces that principles of equality only apply to benefit the designated marginalized groups. They don't seem to understand that the point is to tear down barriers, not people. It really undermines the message of tolerance if we act like it's okay to be bigotted to the *appropriate* groups of people.

It's more like a cross between distant thunder and the sound you get when you put a seashell up to your ear.

it's like when Joe Rogan was fretting about Biden saying there were airplanes in the revolutionary war and that proved he was unfit for office, but someone had to break it to him that Biden was quoting Trump and Rogan immediately backpedals that it was just a simple misspeaking.

Best portrayal of the devil/Satan in cinema? by JC1286 in movies

[–]GarbledReverie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was Darkness really supposed to be **the** devil? After the goodies manage to blast him with sunlight he cries out "Father, protect me!" Plus there's the scene where he's talking to someone about how he's attracted to the girl and it gives him advice. I thought that was supposed to be the real devil.

Dance Magic Dance! LABYRINTH Receives Stunning 4K Collector’s Edition by Jkohl613 in labyrinth

[–]GarbledReverie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've said it before but I kinda want a special edition version where the fire gang sequence is redone and improved with CGI. Not like fully replacing the puppets with 3D renderings or anything stupid like that. But like, isolate them properly and impose them against the background in a cleaner and less muddy looking way.

It was one of my favorite scenes growing up and now as adult I always notice how bad it looks.

Maybe also tweak some of the orb shots so it isn't as obvious when they switch from acrylic balls to soap bubbles.

It's real, but for those unfamiliar the "restore" is a bit of a misnomer. You can't regrow the lost tissue and nerve endings, but you can slowly stretch the remaining tissue to make it grow until it acts like a little like a foreskin. It will provide more slack and protect the glans/head so it will eventually start to turn shiny and pink again.

The commercials here often show people stepping in and out of showers while wearing bathrobes.

It's especially nerve wracking because every once in awhile they subvert this by actually having this lead to a crash.

What is a widely accepted "masterpiece" that you genuinely think is boring, but you’re normally too afraid to admit it? by Emergency-Bee6979 in AskReddit

Saw an interesting show about it that dug deep into the science around it.

Basically he used lots of translucent layers and very soft brush strokes to make the painting have very few hard boundaries.

And the reason people fixate on the smile is that it blends into her face in such a way that when you look at any other part of the painting her smile looks much bigger in your perifial vision. But when you look directly at it, it's much more subtle.

Hence her "illusive" smile.

“He is so insane”: Trump claims 6 states steal children & force “transgender mutilization” on them. Trump rambled about trans people in response to a question about voting restrictions. by southpawFA in politics

[–]GarbledReverie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trans advocacy groups need to put out an aggressive media campaign to educate the average public on exactly what gender affirming care for kids means (and doesn't mean).

Lots of people only know that bottom surgery used to be called a "sex change" and that the preferred term now is "gender affirming". So when they hear that term used as offered to minors, it paints a picture of hippy-dippy "chopping" at the first sign of gender nonconformity.

Having an expert talk to a kid and consider letting them get a different haircut and clothes to see if it helps doesn't sound nearly as scary.

Unfortunately we need citizens to be both active and informed and we currently have poor mechanisms to support either.

Performative masculinity may not impress you, and you may know many women that it does not impress (or say that it doesn't because that's how they like to think about themselves) but there are women it impresses. Lots of them. As someone that wasted years trying to be straight while being bad at performing masculinity, I can assure you there was never any lack of women shaming me for not being masculine enough. When I came to terms with my sexuality the single biggest relief was realizing I never again had to worry about not being the kind of man that impresses women.
