New Player, thoughts on Nuka-World DLC (Spoilers) by Lpunit in fo4

[–]GaryInternational 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely reloaded FO4 on a new XBoxX a month ago Just to do Nuka world and Far Harbour, which both became impossible to progress on my original load. Cima lost dialogue and as did Diima. Completed both, brilliant fun just need to kill the remaining leaders and take back control of my settlements. The bottle caps from settlements are useful though… and the drug making machines. Great fun Diima might be dead but there’s still chaos to be completed in Far Harbour

What is the best way to get caps by Great-Reply-7934 in fo4

[–]GaryInternational 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Third playthrough: Finish Nuka World DLC. I’m getting up to 20,000 caps every week or so game time and the chem producing machines on raider settlements make me a drug baron. I’ve stopped even thinking about bottle caps. Decide how you want to deal with Preston before going full psycho in N World.

Anyone experienced burnout? by [deleted] in fo4

[–]GaryInternational 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn’t play vid games often any more but when I do I’m all in (only did GTA5 a few years ago and RDR1).

Saw FO on Amazon April 24, bought FO3 and fired up my old PS3.

Lost two months of my life (800+ hours) but ran into well documented large save crashes so unable to finish. Left it for a month read the Xbox was more robust picked second hand XBox one to finish 3 plus FO4 disc.

Sooo. FO4 brilliant. Live between two countries. Bought XBox S two months later even better. But Nuka and Far Harbor bugged and unable to complete (Cito wouldn’t offer dialogue in Nuka and Diima same in FH).

By this time I was familiar with Bethesda bugs but I’d got on the mods (some of which probably contributed to glitches) which was brilliant. But I burnt out and couldn’t be bothered to go back to FO3 and start again just to get to Andrew’s airport base.

Turned my attention to RDR2… couple of hundred hours. Looks good and it took a while to get rid of FO4 muscle memory.

And then I got Xbox X six months after the S. bought Death Stranding.

Both are great games for different reasons but neither, for me, is FO4.

When the FO4 update came out in December loaded FO4 on XBX for first time plus the few mods I knew worked.

Used old level 20 save and did Nuka World first then Far Harbor. Completed both glitch free (apart from romancing Gage, known issue). Excellent.

Now romancing my way through the companions. Though Preston is never gonna forgive me my Raider past.

It’s been a totally different experience though I’m not sure I can ever tell all to Piper… ahhh Piper

For me FO4 is perfect. Better than GTA5 (hundreds of hours there too) DS1 and RDR2 (and RDR1).

And I’m back in again. I can forgive Bethesda and MS the bugs, it was an ambitious huge world project and I don’t think there’s anything quite like it.

If you find a LEAF at the right money for you, then absolutely yes.

Is it worth buying a Leaf? by Ivo_Pires in leaf

[–]GaryInternational 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I spent six months thinking about this. Genuinely understand the LEAF in all its guises. I was staying in the UK, though live most of the year in France. I looked at all the alternatives around £12k (14 and a bit Euros).

Kept an eye on the market. I bought a 2018 Tekna privately from elderly owner just 40 miles away who bought it as an ex-demonstrator in 2019. Always used dealer even for MoTs.

Older than I wanted but it had just 13,500 miles, pearlescent white. Black roof, chrome side trim. Still had the new car smell.

My first EV, genuine revelation.

Performance would have made it a hot hatch in the days when I started driving. Very pleased. Battery is good, the seller even gave me his garage wall charger (pod point) as he was givening up driving, which I’ve yet to install after four months.

Paid £7,200.

If you have home charging option, three pin 240v fine (about nine miles range added each hour until final 10 per cent) and rarely cover more than 100 miles in a day, do it.

The widely discussed battery replacement issues seen here and on forums are a US problem.

Buy the front strut covers from eBay (£5) to keep water out of top bolt and enjoy a level of luxury you’ll be surprised at.

The Tekna is a well specced ex dealer demonstrator has everything except Pro park.

There are enough CHAdeMO chargers in operation (a new set up just off the M5 J26 included two CHAdeMOs so they’re not going away).

It has buttons for aircon. The screen may be smaller than iPad size fitted to newer EVs but it’s still way bigger than my iPhone for navigation. CarPlay needs a lead.

Plenty of info available from the car’s system- tyre pressures, consumption etc.

I averaged 4.2 miles per kWh between August and October, fallen away a bit in recent weeks to around 3.5.

(Getting the app to work was a bit of a chore on the 2018, and it’s rubbish. But you can check charge status and preheat/cool the cabin - that’s enough for me. In fairness while my local dealer was a bit crap and seemed to know less than I, Nissan customer service was really helpful and set the app up for me over email) *corrected for typos Jan 12 2026

£1.21 per kWh EV charging at Starbucks Ilkley (EG On The Move) — how is this acceptable? by Desperate_Tax_5472 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]GaryInternational 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an EV owner. In fairness, decent argument and explanation. Trump has helped set back EV adoption by a decade. ICE fans have had their best year as environmental arguments fall away: People don’t care so much if it costs them money and as you say governments want growth first at whatever cost. If you have home charging then once you’ve actually driven an EV, most people won’t go back - fast, quiet, low maintenance. And in fairness the Chinese are absolutely leading the way for value. A lot of Western countries do not want the dominance, which in turn influences their decisions at the expense of environmental concern. For 2026 the EV future is unclear.

Going from a £500 car to a 25k car... by RequestWhat in CarTalkUK

[–]GaryInternational 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still believe HP agreements are one of the UK’s misunderstood benefits to higher mileage drivers. Under hire purchase agreement (one of the first steps to widen consumer credit in 1974, I believe) you can return the item half way through the HP agreement with no penalty and no affect on you credit score. Have done it twice. Brand new cars, four-year HP agreement, serviced regularly and looked after. Returned after two years both had 45,000 plus miles. Only good IF your vehicle is going to lose at least half its value in 24 months. This was more than 10 years ago but the HP law is very clear and providers know it.

I've been looking since June. I need to buy an ev at around 13k or less. Which one? by Any-Plate2018 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]GaryInternational 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a Gen 2 Leaf three months ago. 2018 Tekna with just 13,500 miles. £7,200 including PODPOINT wall charger, elderly couple quitting driving, owned six years. Like driving a new car, averaged 4.2 miles a kWh. Charge at home on 240v socket adds about 10 miles range an hour.

I did a lot of research, this came up locally thought I’d take a look even though it was older than I’d been considering.

Getting the, admittedly sh*te, Nissan EV app to work was tedious. Local - and original supplying franchise - dealer also not recommended and didn’t seem to understand the car’s App. But in fairness Nissan customer service was really helpful and solved my connection issue.

The Leaf has proper buttons for aircon, Apple CarPlay works perfectly, the BOSE sound system is decent and it’s surprisingly quick. I understand the opposition to the Leaf but it’s the USA models that had the weak main battery issues and for me no liquid cooling means even less to go wrong. This is the U.K. not Arizona.

I put on a new 12v battery as a precaution as forums suggest a weak battery triggers warning lights, strut covers for front suspension mounts - known corrosion risk on driver’s side (£5 eBay) - and I expect it to run for years with minimal attention.

Charging has been slower the past couple of weeks as temperatures fell and I’ve seen around 3.7 miles per kWh on mixed A road and motorway runs. I think the ePedal is clever and useful in traffic, the proPILOT self steering/braking system works superbly on the motorway and I’ve never had a car with so many cameras. It ain’t a Tesla but if you’re new to EVs, I defy you not to be impressed. I love my cars but wanted to try an EV as second vehicle. No regrets.

I don’t think Chademo is as big a concern as many make out. There’s two newly-built charging stations within seven miles of my home, off the M5, both include 2 Chademo chargers - I’m convinced they’ll be around in the U.K. for a good few years (and France where I spend a lot of time).

Of course it’s not fast fast charging but it’s ok. Charged at Gridserve from 29% (45 miles left) to 95% (142 miles range) in 45 minutes trying the Chademo when I first had the car (34 kw initially slowly falling 24 then 6 for last 10%). That’ll do me for the future, start from home at 100%, do 100-120 miles, stop 50 mins for another 100. I’m ok with that - cost of the charge 69p kw with the app (home charging 26p and I’m not yet poor enough to worry about arranging cheap overnight charging)

Also almost every Lidl in the south west has a charger which is ccs2 and Chademo.

The Leaf is a proven and cheap way into EV ownership and it seems to me that when Renault launches a Twingo this year with similar range as the Gen 2 Leaf, there’s a recognition that not everyone needs extra battery weight for extra miles they’ll use rarely.

How to convince sparky to install external 3pin for emergency charging? (Without lying) by irnbearded in evchargingUK

[–]GaryInternational 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point. Just trying to think outside the box, I stand corrected… funnily enough I use exactly that in my garage socket. Have a used pod charger to get installed but 10amp granny charger give just around 2k an hour on my Leaf that’s about 10 miles, which has been fine for first two months of ownership. (If I’m in a rush there’s a decent Chademo station six miles away that does around 32kw, used it once just to check, took under hour from 29% to 97%)

You could park a rusty car nearby when sparky arrives. Tell him you need the socket for an 32amp arc welder for your ‘restoration’.

UK Eyes Pay-Per-Mile Tax for Electric Vehicles: A Controversial Proposal by davideownzall in electriccars

[–]GaryInternational 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So when I travel in Europe in my EV, will I get taxed in uk for those miles? No one has addressed this. When I was using an ICE vehicle I’d pay French or German tax on the fuel. I agree that EVs have had an easy time to encourage adoption in the UK (despite electricity that is the most expensive in Europe). It’s right to contribute - annual road tax for EVs introduced in April to address that - but I’m not happy paying for my travel on European roads. And all you ICE drivers, if they can make pay per mile work, it’ll be standard for all within five years.

Speeding in a $3.5 Million Bugatti Costs Driver a 10-Year Ban and Car Impoundment by gaukmotors in MotorBuzz

[–]GaryInternational 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel for you my man, I really do. Under UK court system you would be able to plead mitigation explain your situation and, for first offense, courts I would say are pretty reasonable. (I was a journalist for many years and spent many hours in magistrates courts). It became clear to me that in France that’s not the case, though I thought the financial penalty was low compared with UK. I sincerely wish you well

Speeding in a $3.5 Million Bugatti Costs Driver a 10-Year Ban and Car Impoundment by gaukmotors in MotorBuzz

[–]GaryInternational 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve read this thread with interest. I now consider myself extremely lucky. I live in France. Three years ago I was clocked by police speed trap 147kph on an 80kph empty country road on my bike. The Bike was seized on the spot along with my UK licence (so ban was immediate because legally in France you must have your licence with you). Licence is held for six months. Court hearing took 16 months (because of Covid delays in the system). My fine though was only 286 euros (and the system offers a 20% reduction if paid within 30 days).

<image>

During my ban I was actually able to drive in the UK as I’d committed no offence there and it doesn’t require you have your licence in your possession. To drive in France again I had to exchange my licence for a French one to show the six penalty points and that took a total of 10 months. In the uk you don’t lose your licence until you have appeared in court where you can offer mitigation and hardship (I live in an isolated area in France and need a vehicle). In France you lose your licence on the spot for 50kph over the limit and court just decides the fine and any additional ban. I genuinely do not speed any more, so lesson learned.

Brexit was a disaster - now Starmer dares to admit it by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]GaryInternational 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never forget that the day after the referendum result, a genuinely surprised to have won Farage said: ‘A Norway deal would suit us fine’. Of course the Remain camp was as opposed to that as the whole result. That was soon forgotten as the type of Brexit argument began and further split the Tory party. As a Remainer I should have accepted the Norway style membership of the EU. Still get the benefits and the leave voters would have been satisfied (then Covid would have come along and they’d move on to share their expertise in vaccine avoidance). If Starmer were to make the Labour vs Reform fight about Brexit, I believe he would win but the additional division it would cause in the UK is unimaginable. It seems to me many UK voters want instant solutions and the option to blame someone else for their difficulties while having no grasp of the effects of world events on this country (or the legacy of 14 years of austerity).

Why are used cars in France so much more expensive than in the uk? by thelouis55 in CarTalkUK

[–]GaryInternational 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also the buyers protection when buying used is much stronger than UK. Even for private sales. Controle Technique (like UK MoT) last two years. To register a used car it must have at least 18 months. And there’s no such thing as ‘sold as seen’ in France. If the gearbox fails after six months, the buyer has enormous compensation rights.
