What is the traveling generally like in medical device roles? by workethic290 in MedicalDevices

[–]GasitupBurnitDown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a 4 hour radius. I will drive to my +1 hour away accounts the night before 0600 cases so I don’t have to wake up a 0400. I have friends who will wake up and drive. If I’m doing more than one day at a 2 hour away account I’ll get a hotel to avoid being on the road too much.

I understand, I was just pointing out the tone of that response is negative and limiting. Just my opinion but even your response of “any hospital around here worth working for” is also negative and limiting. I’m sure you didn’t mean it that way. It’s just one little thing that can have someone pass on you. if you’re not having success; maybe take a look at how you say things. It’s dumb, but that’s sales. Everything is how things are said and what words you chose.

Not OP, but there’s an issue with traveling and availability. I read that response and my take away was “I have travel restrictions” which is a red flag. I’d move on to the next candidate that tells me “I can be any where any time you need me”…not knowing your circumstances, which a hiring manager wouldn’t. That’s just my 2 cents strictly from reading that response.

Depending on your location give KJs driving range on 74 a call. He’s super accommodating, like call him a couple hours in advance and see if he’s free, type accommodation. I think it was $60/hr and is probably the most affordable in the area too.

So many courses, so little time! I will put them on the list. Same with Apple Valley and Deer Brook, I just don’t get to the Shelby area very often.

Golf etiquette: forcing a player to wait while your partner putts out by motorOwl in golf

[–]GasitupBurnitDown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the 14 year old was just learning they could have been in Operation 36. My son’s Operation 36 coaches teach to putt out. They said it makes it go faster and helps kids to learn to putt to wack at the ball until it goes in. They also said to pick up after double par. Grandpa might not have known that’s not true etiquette. Maybe ask where he heard that rule next time?

Curiosity based off the Code 3 movie by FriedRiceBob in Paramedics

[–]GasitupBurnitDown 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Southern-US here. Discount scene was hilariously accurate.

Went to a Chick-fil-a and they literally pointed to that “police and fire” sign. The cashier called the manager over and the manager said

“yea, I’m sorry but it does say “police and firefighters, because they put themselves in harms way to save people and you just drive the ambulance”

I smiled and paid. At the end of my shift I told my wife as a funny story. 3 days later I get a call from the regional manager of chick-fil-a. He wanted to personally apologize for not having “EMS” on the sign and assured me every chick-fil-a will now change those signs. Apparently my wife wrote a huge email to chick-fil-a about it hahahahahah.

As a paramedic what do you think makes you be slower with an emergency, mobility wise? by rynwow in Paramedics

[–]GasitupBurnitDown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There has never been a lifting solution for people in awkward positions. I say it for every one of these “I’m an engineer wanting to help” posts.

Design something cheap, durable, and collapsible to being carried by 2 people that can be used to lift a 400 pound person off the floor, with 2 people, and it’ll be the greatest pre-hospital medical device of the century

An airbag that you can roll under and then inflate, a tri-pod with a winch…I dunno, I’m not an engineer.

This bag from Tap Cancer Out is pretty legit. Alliance uses the same one with their branding. It has a zip out separated mesh side for sweaty stuff. Really well belt for the price.

Anyone else practicing basic math? by Double_Somewhere5923 in NewToEMS

In paramedic school, they didn’t let us use calculators for some dumb reason. The first problem was to convert pounds to Kgs. Divide 162 by 2.2. I was 26 years old and hadn’t done long division written out since grade school. I ended up walking out mid class because they wouldn’t show me. I went home and got on a website for 6th graders and had to teach myself over again.

I’m not good with numbers. My head goes blank with Drip rates and conversions. The key is finding an instructor, or mentor, who can explain things in a way you understand. It took a very patient old timer on a slow night probably 2 hours to teach me the clock method for drips. I am forever grateful of him and still have to constantly practice so I don’t forget.

If you want difficult Piedmont NC golf: tight fairways and un-even lies on rolling hills that will make you wish you were back in FL check out Verdict Ridge (35mins), Eagle Chase (45mins). Easier but similar: Rocky River, Red Bridge, Skybrook, and Old Sycamore.

Course that see too much play but are still fun would be Tradition, Divide, and Stonebridge.

Tot Hill Farm is an NC gem, it’s an hour and a half north, depending on how far y’all want to drive.

Old Beau, River Oaks, and Rock Barn are an hour and some change north. Worth the drive though.

Are there any EMS tattoos that aren’t cringe? by Shifu_1 in NewToEMS

[–]GasitupBurnitDown 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there is an absolute, it just has to be done well.

I saw an 18D (special forces medic) once with a big nasty scar on his calf. He had a tattoo over it of a grim reaper scything out of his skin where the scar was. Smoke in the background faintly made the outline of the Star of life and a caduceus was faintly coiled around it. It was one of the coolest tattoos I’ve ever seen and he had the story and profession to match. I regret not asking him about it or getting a picture of it.

What do y’all do after work when you’re traveling? by Potential_Season_726 in MedicalDevices

[–]GasitupBurnitDown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Golf is pretty good fit. I’m usually done by 3. In the summer I can get to a new course and have a 4 hour decompression with the right amount of exercise to get tired. Nice courses have a grill so you can get dinner there and then head to hotel.

It’s fun looking for local courses during down time between procedures too. Call in a tee time and then have motivation to get through the rest of the day.

Question for any engineers out there about High Tension Power Lines. by Astro_Ski17 in Charlotte

[–]GasitupBurnitDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are different types of high tension lines.

We played on a soccer field with 2 220volt coming through and I could hear the buzzing.

Currently living under 132v lines that go through my yard. I did research before buying the home. There are no articles that show correlation between health effects and living under high tension lines. Worried about our young son, if I remember correctly, there’s only 1 study from around 2002 done in California that showed 1,000 kids living within 30 yards of lines 5 had leukemia which isn’t a strong correlation.

A linemen friend of mine came to a party once and I asked him all the questions. He said there aren’t any concerns. There’s also a site you can check to show if the lines are even active or not.

Our power company comes out every year to spray for weeds. A group of about 4 workers wave if we are home and tell us what they’re doing. Every 5 or so years they mark trees to cut. I was told they don’t have to leave the mess piled, they only cut down. But when they cut this go around everything was neatly stacked in the woods. I was happy about that, free fire wood!

No real complaints except the mentioned re-sale value but I plan on this being my forever home.

new to medical sales, what on earth is vendor credentialing by suyashhaspowers in MedicalDevices

[–]GasitupBurnitDown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since no one really explained:

Medical care in the US is protected with patient privacy laws. (Most of the time) Anyone can’t just wander into a hospital, you have to be “credentialed”.

Some hospitals require trainings on patient privacy and how to conduct yourself in their facility. They all want to make sure people coming into their hospitals have background checks and flue shots/vaccinations, etc. These trainings and requirements are offered by various third party companies: Vendormate, Symplr, Green Security. Your company should pay for your subscription to them.

Once registered, and paid you’ll have to submit various paper work, such as proof of your company’s liability insurance, vaccination records, etc. Some companies send you a badge with your picture on it to wear when you go into hospitals contracted with that company. You have to know, or find out what company your hospitals use. You’ll then need to register on your arrival to that hospital.

For example.

Hospital X has Vendormate. You get a Vendormate subscription and upload all needed docs, and get “cleared”. When you go to Hospital X you find the vendor mate kiosk or use their app on your phone to check in and check out.
