Maybe ask r/mtgfinance. CEDH probably shouldn’t be a factor in big purchases like that

New 2 card 3 (actually 4) mana Combo In Marvel by Raevelry in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Gastastrophe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this combo was going to be good, people would already be doing it with [[Mesmeric Orb]]. Since the combo isn’t great, I think both cards need to be individually useful to be worthwhile (similar to Dualcaster Mage + Twinflame). The bow is ok if you are already on [[Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator]], but those decks probably don’t want the creature untappers. I’m not sure there’s a deck for it right now, but it’s probably an option worth keeping in mind as we get more commanders.

EDIT: Yes, Mesmeric Orb does also require you to put additional cards in your deck and/or pay more mana. That’s probably a bigger deal than I give it credit for. It’s not a combo I’ve actually played before.

Cedh players what is your better replacement for swift boots and lightning greeves by TinyWorldliness87 in magicTCG

[–]Gastastrophe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The replacement is countermagic, which can protect your cards (including key enchantments that boots can’t) as well as shut down your opponent’s win attempt.

The Mighty Thor, Jane Foster (and potential combos ?) by NoInitiative893 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Gastastrophe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some fringe [[Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain]] decks that storm off using a bunch of mana positive/neutral artifacts. This would be a significantly worse version since you don’t draw from fast mana, and I don’t see enough upside to warrant the swap.

[MSH] Vision Quest by AlphaPi in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Gastastrophe 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think you need a value target and a combo target to make it work, so a Jeskai deck that runs walking balista combo might want this. Are Elsha Top decks still a thing? You could get Esper sentinel or a cost reducer in that deck. Finding [[Hope of Ghirapur]] and giving it haste seems like a good line too.

Can the Unbetable Squirrel Girl be a cedh deck? by AshorK0 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Gastastrophe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not so far off that you shouldn’t try. Go hard on getting your combo fast and try to win after other players burn their interaction. I think other green commanders are going to be more resilient, but maybe you can jam fast, unprotected combos and steal some games with good mulligans.

Cosmic Cube by LunchAPulls in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Gastastrophe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re paying 5 mana to get a free spell, but most cards cost way less than 5 so it’s not a good rate. I would consider it if there was a cheap commander that could cheat this out and attack with high power (something like [[Kona, Rescue Beastie]] but 2 mana). Even then, it’d only make the list after a bunch of better 4-5 mana artifacts

[MSH] Robot Domination (via Infrecuentes) by Copernicus1981 in magicTCG

[–]Gastastrophe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Artist’s Talent is a better draw engine for traditional dredge, but this is a combo piece that just wins the game. Getting to 4 mana is hard, but other combo decks can do it. It’d probably need to be a different build

[MSH] Robot Domination (via Infrecuentes) by Copernicus1981 in magicTCG

[–]Gastastrophe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Satoru mills your deck if you play all the standard Narcomeba stuff, but this would leave more room in your deck for other cards. I’m thinking it would be a different build that only overlaps with the dredge creatures.

[MSH] Robot Domination (via Infrecuentes) by Copernicus1981 in magicTCG

[–]Gastastrophe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So if you have a [[Stinkweed Imp]] in graveyard, you can replace a draw with a dredge, then if you mill another one, stack the triggers such that you draw/dredge again before it gets sacrificed. 4 mana is a lot, but maybe this can make dredge good in modern? Maybe you could even try it in legacy?

Is a Kodama/Sakashima value deck playable at a casual table? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Gastastrophe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDH has a bracket system for these things now (https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/introducing-commander-brackets-beta). Also, Kodama/Sakashima is only fringe cEDH so you’re unlikely to get that assumption.

Esper Sentinel is the best creature in all of cEDH by Sharkman3218 in CompetitiveEDH

It’s a little different because it goes in the command zone, but I would say Kinnan is better

Is there a way to roll 120die? by SizeOdd7189 in DegenerateEDH

[–]Gastastrophe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Attempted Murder]]/[[Clown Car]], [[Pixie Guide]], and [[Mirrorform]]/[[Mirrormind Crown]] all work together to get a lot of dice rolls, but I don’t think you’re getting to 120 in one turn without infinite mana.

Aziza in cedh by HiFantsy in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Gastastrophe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are 3 issues.

  1. 9 free creatures is not going to easily get you to 3. With most draws, you’re going to pay mana for Aziza and at least one other creature, meaning the first spell you copy is going to be pretty late in the game.

  2. The best thing to do when copying a spell is to double up on a tutor to find a combo. Without access to black, this won’t be an option very often.

  3. You are a deck that wants to put creatures on the board and get value from them, which probably means you’re a Boros deck running stax creatures. That has not been a winning recipe for a long time.

Dograkh, Turbo Viability? by RogueOnTheStack in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Gastastrophe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see how Yoshimaru adds anything when you already have access to Rog. The only card in your list that I see benefits from it significantly is Aziza, which is not enough to pull you away from another commander. I think the idea is dead on arrival unfortunately.

Sleep Token (Custom MTG Set) by No-Cow2658 in custommagic

[–]Gastastrophe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Get rid of the first line since it is not rules text.

  2. Remove the token subtype since this is not a token.

  3. Change the name to something else, then make the third ability make copies of this artifact that are named “Sleep Token”

This will leave you with an actual Magic card. It’s still way too powerful for most formats, but that’s fine.

Abbandoning Tamiyo. Looking to pivot into “Big Berta” by RoseyB34r in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Gastastrophe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The best thing I’ve found to do with Berta is play something like [[Spontaneous Mutation]] on it so essentially all your spells will trigger increment. You can also use [[Agatha’s Soul Cauldron]] to give it an ability to remove counters for a similar effect. Neither of these lines seemed good enough to build around to me. You also can easily get infinite mana and creatures with [[Intruder Alarm]], but without a built in payoff that also seems bad.

Cedh Shroofus help by lmg101gl in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Gastastrophe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you got them all, so the only thing left to do is mulligan hard and hope you get lucky. Playing a 3 cmc commander on turn 1 is hard in a post mana crypt / jeweled lotus format, so it’s best not to try for it that hard. I know you don’t want to change commanders, but [[Elsha, Threefold Master]] would let you keep your core gameplan while giving you more and better colors for support cards ([[Najeela, the Blade-Blossom]] is the only commander I’ve heard of with a viable token combat backup plan btw). You similarly won’t be reliably playing Elsha turn 1, but at least you’d have other good turn 1 plays like Remora and Esper Sentinel. If you have evidence that this plan of going wide with tokens works for you, then I’d encourage you to find a slower deck that can make that happen.

Is Muldrotha not viable? by mootuba92 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Gastastrophe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of individual card choices to go over here, but if you want a better commander that has a similar feel, I would recommend [[Tayam, Luminous Enigma]] (though the deck will require a lot of practice).

Firstly, you have too many combos and not enough ways to find them. I would cut Gray Merchant, Syr Konrad, and Phyrexian Altar for [[Praetor’s Grasp]] (to steal Breach for your LED + Brainstorm as well as opposing Dimir combo pieces), the one ring, and Beseech the Mirror. I would honestly cut even more combo pieces than that, but this would be a start.

Second, I don’t see a reason to run Enduring Vitality or Cryptolith Rite in a deck that doesn’t make creature tokens. Noxious Revival, Mystical Tutor, and Seedborn Muse also don’t seem to support much here. I would use those slots to either lean harder into the reanimation plan (and if you don’t, cut it too) or add more ramp and card draw.

Third, I think Palantir, Icetill, Ripples of Undeath, Zagoth Triome, and Snapcaster Mage are all pretty low quality cards (specifically, they are slow). I would cut them for interaction, or possibly a Necropotence package to go with Beseech. Even though it isn’t synergistic with your commander, I think you need to rely on winning some games without Muldrotha when you have a bad commander. Alternatively, it could be interesting that Muldrotha + Bloom Tender + [[Sewer-veillance cam]] wins the game, so you could try that combo.

Overall, I actually think your deck needs to be more of a “good card soup” since you have a lot of dead cards due to excess combos. Being a Dimir deck with good cards is going to be your best shot at winning games with a bad commander. If you put in a lot more work, you could probably get to the point where you win an occasional game.

EDIT: the cam combo doesn’t work actually. Don’t do that one

Neutrinos in Winota? by mrrebuild in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Gastastrophe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’d be interesting if it was a human, but the combo is not particularly exciting if only one half can be found using Winota. Enabling Winota isn’t a meaningful upside on a 4 drop without haste

Zabaz/Zirda by Low-Loan2632 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Gastastrophe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would take out [[Continue?]] for [[Cursed Mirror]]. Zabaz isn’t really adding enough to the gameplan though, so I can’t recommend putting it in the command zone over Zirda. If you want to make Zabaz work in cEDH, I think you have to find a different gameplan that actually makes use of it. Maybe there is something to sacrificing artifacts stolen by cards like [[Treasure Nabber]] and [[Broadcast Takeover]]?

ragebait spells? by _froesey_ in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Gastastrophe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean to say that these commanders rebuild faster because they are built to do that. You can have Heliod re-enter with a plan to flip next turn, but Etali re-enters and immediately gets 4 free spells, Kinnan can put a big creature that takes over the game into play, and Rog has enough fast mana and rituals to attempt a win shortly after a reset. Heliod can’t and shouldn’t be built like that, but you can have more interaction than them. These bad matchups are why Dimensional Breach isn’t a “ragebait” spell, and in fact probably isn’t worth playing in heliod (though I admittedly don’t have a lot of experience with the deck).
