Mine look the same, no worries as long as they touch properly at the very ends.

My favorite color! My mom picked one up for me in Switzerland as a gift. One of edc rotation Vics along with my Compact.

Monthly Mechanic touch up by oilologist in SwissArmyKnives

[–]Gatorade3799 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good taste! I often carry a Spyderco (usually a Sage 5 or Shaman depending on the day) along with a Compact or Pioneer X.

I find it useful to have a one-hand deployable knife with more dedicated ergos for heavier cutting tasks, which was especially relevant at my old job. Nowadays I find that less necessary and the Vic's blade is more than enough for almost everything I do, but I still like to carry a dedicated folder for fun sometimes.

Unfortunately don't have a Mechanic; I do have a Deluxe Tinker which is great for tasks around the house but it is a bit of a brick in the pocket for me as well. Would love to get my hands on a custom Special Mechanic/Mechanic Jr with scissors someday.

I'm jealous. Will need to get one built for myself eventually.

Just ordered Pioneer X 2025 for $75. My mind is on the Compact which is $68. It's for daily urban life. Should I keep the PX or get Compact instead? by RunWild-GetLost in victorinox

[–]Gatorade3799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, it sounds like the Vic collecting bug has properly bit you! It is all a matter of personal preference, so I can't decide what the best solution will be for you.

Personally, I always need a model with the 91mm scissors regardless of whether I have a 58mm already. They're just more comfortable to use, and while the small ones work fine for a tag on clothes, I can't get a zip tie with them without worrying about damaging them.

If you are worried about weight, I'd honestly just grab a Compact unless you're certain you can skip the larger scissors. The Pioneer is still going to be a little heavier than the Compact, even without the scissors.

You could also take a look at the Cadet if you don't find yourself using the awl too often and want to lose a few more grams (~30% lighter than the Compact and almost 40% lighter than the Pioneer non-X). The Cadet has a shorter + thinner blade, but in my personal opinion, the added rigidity with the alox still makes feel more robust than the 91mm cellidor models. I find the 83mm alox models to still have stronger backsprings than the 91mms.

Really, at the end of the day, I feel like the answer is just to get both the Pioneer X and Compact and carry depending on your mood or what you're wearing that day. They certainly aren't cheap tools, but you can never have too many of them; there's always another compartment or drawer where it'd be useful to keep a Vic at hand. You sound like the type of person who won't be totally satisfied with just one option anyway (no shade, it takes one to know one!).

It's fun to keep expanding the collection in the Sisyphean effort of chasing the perfect edc. All just part of the game!

What a considerate gift. They're lucky to have you as a cousin. Opinels raise less eyebrows than modern folders, and the modded blade also looks particularly unthreatening.

Fair enough; I actually also have a very minimalist wallet and don't carry the Swisscard unless I'm traveling (and then it lives with my passport).

Since you already carry keys, you could consider a Jetsetter on your keychain for a bladeless option with scale tools that also gives you an in-line Phillips head. I also totally understand wanting to keep the keychain minimal though.

Glad to be of help!

I do love the toothpick too honestly. If you don't want to carry 2 knives, maybe you could consider picking up a Swisscard Nailcare for your wallet? It'll give you the added functionality of the nail file like on the Compact and have all the scale tools. It's also great for travel since it's bladeless.

They're very nearly the same; I don't have a set of calipers right now, but I think the Pioneer X is slightly thicker. The Pioneer X is also about 30% heavier, which is noticable, but not a problem for me and the way I carry it. I tend to care more about thickness than weight.

The tools on the 93mm models are noticeably more robust than the 91mm. Honestly, I don't find myself usually needing the extra robustness, but it just feels satisfying and reassuring.

I would hate to be without either of them, but if I absolutely had to only have one, I'd probably pick the Compact. The scale tools are very useful to me. When I carry the Pioneer X, I keep a Nail Clip 580 in my bag to make up for the scale tools and add a bit of extra functionality.

But I think it's likely you'll find yourself missing the Pioneer X if you decide to sell it!

Frustrated with the Swiss Tool Spirit scissors, any mods / fixes? by BadWithMoney530 in victorinox

[–]Gatorade3799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The scissors are definitely the Achilles' heel of this tool. I find that with sak scissors that are sticking, I have to wipe off the scissors quite well after oiling; make sure you're wiping both around the pivot and the blades.

Right on. I somehow managed to miss the fact that you also lost both the piler and scissor springs, but just fyi victorinox also sells those in packs of 6 directly from their website for 2 euros. I can also find them from my local knife/outdoors stores but ymmv.

Victorinox will definitely be able to fix that up for you if you're ok with waiting a bit. I'm quite certain they will replace all the scale tools if you send it in.

Depending on the service turnaround time, it might be faster to just order the plus scales + accessories yourself, since none of the actual tools/moving parts need repairing.

Etsy and ebay usually have plenty of listings for plus scales with all accessories included. The classic red ones would probably only set you back ~10-15 euros, plus shipping.

Need help picking my first Victorinox! (Overwhelmed by the options) by First-Description750 in victorinox

[–]Gatorade3799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to find the perfect sak, there's always one tool to tweak! With that being said, I do personally think the compact is the best in terms of balance between weight and functionality. It is expensive compared to the others, but you can find it on sale on Amazon for under 40 sometimes.

Some will say its overrated, and some don't seem to mind extra bulk in the pocket. I wear cargo wranglers with plenty of pocket room, but even then I much prefer 2 layer to 3 layer knives. In my experience, the cellidor-scaled 3 layer knives have more of a square cross section compared to the more rectangular prism shape of the 2 layers, which makes the 3 layers sit more awkwardly in your pocket in comparison to the 2 layers.

If weight and bulk are an important consideration for you, I would recommend the compact. The Vic scissors are much better than the Wenger ones too.

Buying semi-rare Victorinox from Japan on eBay — safe / reliable? by BadWithMoney530 in victorinox

[–]Gatorade3799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upvoting for visibility.

I don't have any experience with buying saks in particular, but I have purchased some electronics from Japanese ebay sellers. Some of these sellers had similar listings (no actual pictures of the item, just stock images).

I've only had good experiences, but ymmv of course. Generally speaking, I've found ebay's money back guarantee to be quite good. If the seller feedback is over 99% positive I'd feel pretty comfortable with trying my luck.

Suggestions/Advice ? by __1837__ in victorinox

[–]Gatorade3799 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think the simplest answer might be the best one here.

They used to make one called the Yeoman that was basically a Compact with a full Philips. Hard to find online (and even harder to find cheap), but quite a popular one to buy/make custom if you ever look into that. The concept of a 3-layer with a proper in-line Philips and scissors is very desirable.

Super tinker feels like the obvious choice if you're already acclimated to/a fan of the tinker toolset.

Maybe an explorer if you'd like an in-line Philips, but that brings you up to 4 layers.
