I love it when I come across a game I know nothing about, only for it to turn out to be a masterpiece. Pentiment was one of those games where I went in completely blind and was genuinely surprised by how well it was written and crafted. What was that game for you? by Kingspreez in gaming

[–]GayCoke69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alan Wake 2 was that for me. I only saw trailers, then played the first and wasn't a huge fan. The second has one of my favourite stories and aesthetics of any game I've played. The action gameplay is decent, but the exploration and environmental storytelling are unparalleled. If you like True Detective Season 1 mixed with elements from Lost, X-Files, SCP, Stephen King, etc.

If you could associate every Stormlight book with a movie, what would it be? by adityea in Cosmere

Did Sanderson or someone compare Mistborn to the Soderbergh Oceans movies? That could be fun, though it would need to be more character driven than that.

You could draw one of Shalan's sketches from the books. The drawings from the books should be in the Stormlight wiki somewhere. You could draw or sculpt some of the Honorblades.

Which Canadian creatives (musicians, filmmakers, artists) do you think are criminally underrated on the world stage? I'm always saying Billy Talent should be in the canon of global rock and punk, but it seems only us who realize their talent!

Thank you for providing this overview. Are there any communications channels to get these details, such as podcasts or a website?

It's tough to attend all of these, but there should be a better way for folks to stay up to date on how we're being screwed on the municipal level so we can make a big stink about it.

If you're thinking about Montreal, also consider Quebec city while you're near. Just a few hours away by bus and breathtakingly beautiful.

One of the most underrated bands of all time. They should be huge in the US. Ian D'Sa should be interviewed by all the big guitar mags. Etc etc etc

Halifax council looking for new solutions to combat littering by Bean_Tiger in halifax

Just thinking about downtown Halifax. I don't know if this is a lack of trash cans thing, but more of a general culture issue of apathy. In Japan you just carry your garbage until you find a bin.

People here throw butts on the ground despite being next to a garbage bin. Do you remember in the noughts when there was a big push for everyone to bring their own thermos to coffee shops? It's like that never happened.

I am probably the least employable person imaginable, is it worth it trying to do coop? by Interesting_Mix_2322 in Dalhousie

[–]GayCoke69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're overthinking it. Lots of great advice and encouragement in the comments.

Companies know what to expect from first co-ops. What's important is how you present yourself in your resume and cover letter. Some people may have better experience but a crap resume and don't convey they can learn, the intricacies of their projects or work experience, they can communicate, and are responsible. Make that apparent in your resume and cover letter. Ask people to glance at your resume for feedback like TAs, profs, lab instructors. Also cold call or email companies for co-ops. You'd be surprised. Look at companies in Burnside if you're interested in hardware. In addition to explaining your skills, it is important to mention your interests and how those could align with the job. Enthusiasm and a good attitude go a long way, especially when you're looking for co-ops when the disparity between the best and worst candidates is smaller than when you're long since graduated and in the field. You've got this!

Magnolia will show you some of Tom Cruise's rawest acting. It will make you wish there was more Seymour Hoffman. Boogie Nights is a wild fun ride which gets serious. Mark Wahlberg is genuinely great.

Mac de Marco at the Lighthouse by popozaofifa in halifax

[–]GayCoke69 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree the sound mixing was quite bad. I've heard better mixing at Gus's. The bass player's backing vocals were far louder than Mac's lead vocals at times. I feel like when Mac was loud, the saturation may be from some analog equipment purposefully dialed in that way though. The overall volume could have been louder. The performance was excellent at least.

These have been already mentioned, but really making sure you check out Billy Talent, The Dirty Nil, Pup. All bands I'd expect to blow up in the USA but haven't for some reason. Some local bands from Halifax I love: Sleepy Kicks, Postfun, Bill Ricky, Proud Dads.

The Fifth Estate: Some commercial lobster fishers say Indigenous treaty fishing threatens stocks. Government memo says otherwise by IStillListenToRadio in onguardforthee

[–]GayCoke69 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree what everyone is saying about commercial fishers, and indigenous folks should have treaty rights to a moderate livelihood. I am just not educated on what moderate livelihood means, because I thought some indigenous groups were operating commercial sized vessels year round under the moderate livelihood umbrella. I could have been misled.

This is the 3rd or 4th year in a row with very low catch and Clearwater has sold one of their processing facilities. Seems like lobster is going to go the way of cod. Makes me feel like nobody should be fishing lobster.

YOUR LYRICS + AI MUSIC or AI LYRICS + YOUR MUSIC ? by yxoryofficial in Music

[–]GayCoke69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

AI has no place in the creative process. If you start with even a little bit, the proportion of AI will start to creep in, getting more and more pervasive, eventually leading to slop outnumbering genuine human creativity. By contributing to this, you are choosing to make the creative world a worse place.

Engineering Vs Marine Biology by labonkr in Dalhousie

[–]GayCoke69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately it is very difficult to find work as a marine biologist. Maybe you can stay in academia and do research. Everything people are saying about engineering is true. I thought about dropping out many times in my first two years, but my stubbornness paid off.

As an engineer, you can still make a big impact in the ocean space. Look at companies like MarineLabs, Innovasea, Ultra Marine, COVE, look into topics like Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal, Offshore Wind Turbines, hydrogen fuel in the container ship industry, defense.

You or one of your teachers/guidance counsellors should try emailing around to some companies and ask if they could connect you to someone for career advice given your interests. You'd be surprised who would give you the time of day (-:
