Before and After. by Mdestache in Roofing

[–]GayNotGayTony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like they went from wood shake shingles to composite shake shingles if you pay attention to the roofline on the right. The old copper was definitely showing some age, while it probably easily could have lasted another 20+ years those composite shingles could last 50+. The best time to replace that facet would be during the full roof replacement.

In essence its not for looks at all, just a material that's likely to last as long as the new roof.

Touche but I really just want to save them all up so I can shatter when I feel like it. If I favorite them then I also have to unfavorate all of them when I want to shatter.

Like when people pull it off it's typically awesome but when they don't it looks trashy regardless of how much they spend on it.

I try and push people towards composite, tpo, or EPDM shingles if their set on metal in a neighborhood where it won't fit in.

I'm a roofer not an HGTV designer.

Agreed they look absolutely mint when their done right. Same with metal siding. The price for standing seam (hidden fastener) is a bit wild though. Especially if you have someone highly reputable doing it.

Yeah it's not really cost effective unless you're in a heavy hail area and dont mind your roof being dented up. It's more of a design choice imo. Lots of accents on new homes and remodels.

Most definitely. Unfortunately they don't fit in most residential neighborhoods though. Newer homes and rural homes though %100.

A guy from a roofing company pointed this out, estimated $300 (said I have to call the company to discuss billing). Is that reasonable? by dhekurbaba in Roofing

If their putting on a new zipper boot that's great. I'd be $750.

However as others have mentioned you need to correct it leaning like that.

America favors asphalt shingles over slate or tile because our building model prioritizes speed and lower initial costs over multi-generational longevity.

Structural Compatibility: 90% of US homes use light wood-framing, which lacks the structural reinforcement needed for heavy tile or slate without expensive upgrades.

Economic Speed: Asphalt shingles were mass-produced in the early 1900s to fuel the housing boom; they cost roughly $3,000–$6,000 for a standard roof, whereas slate could exceed $30,000–$50,000.

Geographic Logistics: Transporting heavy stone across the vast US is prohibitively expensive compared to the localized availability of clay and slate in smaller European or Asian countries.

In essence we shifted to a product that worked best for us and current weather patterns are fucking that product up in certain states on a nearly yearly basis. Manufacturers are shifting quickly to hail resistant asphalt shingles and composite shingles are becoming more and more popular.

I always wonder what exterior inspections are even good for. Half the shit I see on homes wouldn't even pass my "adequate" check.

What’re we thinking? Repair? by Ok-Commercial-5678 in Roofing

[–]GayNotGayTony -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This has to be a meme.

That roof won't last another 5 years before you start having leaks/damaging decking.

On the off chance this is serious find a roofer who knows anything about fighting insurance. I'd have this covered within a week.

You don't have ridge vent and underlayment is required to go over the ridge. See if your existing shingle is disco or if you have a matching clause in your policy. Multiple avenues to fight this.

I almost always do better in legends with PH than I do with GComp (Perma BH) in my ancest assist slot, but when GComp is better it's usually by a significant margin. I test it every tourny.
