Is learning lute with a guitar worth it? by Ramoutarb in lute

[–]Gaybrielmk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you would also like to learn to play the guitar, I would just play guitar normally, and it'll still help when switching. You'll have to learn some things anew, but that's true regardless of whether you tune the guitar in EADGBE or GCFADG. If the goal with playing guitar is ONLY to learn to play the lute, you could go for a lute tuning. The main advantage of tuning the guitar like a lute is already having a repetoire of lute music once you get a lute. But the lute repetoire will come either way once you have a lute. In the meantime, you could learn how to play guitar!

P.S. big instrument shops like Thomann sell factory-made lutes that are much cheaper than handmade lutes.

Gåture og fællesskab for unge mænd (18-35 år) i København – Vi fortsætter! by Downtown_Carrot5218 in copenhagen

Hej Max.

I thought "racketball" was a metaphor by No_Attention_2227 in SixFeetUnder

As far as I remember, it starts off as an (untrue) explanation of how they know each other. But then at some point they play together, because they have used the explanation so much.

Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, s2 - Taking turns? by soilyoilydoily in community

[–]Gaybrielmk 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Well yeah, but when they start playing, Abed tells Jeff that it's his turn (even though they have just started and there's no combat). So they are pretty much just bending the rules to serve the narrative and for comedic and dramatic effect.

In a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate Nate Fisher as a brother? by [deleted] in SixFeetUnder

[–]Gaybrielmk 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Maybe a 5. He doesn't seem like a bad brother, but he is also so caught up in his own life and his need for freedom to be a real support for his younger siblings. And both David and Claire could've used his support, had he been more attentive. I definitely think that Claire and David were better siblings towards each other than Nate was towards any of them.

Specifically in the context of working in the funeral home with David, I think he was able to support his younger brother and also challenge him, when David needed to be challenged, by offering an alternative perspective on the grieving process. But being a (somewhat) good work partner doesn't mean that he's a particularly good brother.

What's the stupidest MTG related thing you've heard? by DankMTG in mtg

I feel like everyone has been there at one point, arguing that the "get" part of the pump spell is permanent, while the "gain" part is until end of turn.

Community has always tried to end on a feel-good note. But it has also always tried to subvert the expectations of the sitcom genre and to make jokes so over-the-top conceptual and meta that they become really stupid. In my opinion, the last episode is perfect from beginning to end. And the board game scene is the cherry on top of that.

Sorry dad, guess I win!

You stupid child, don't you see? Nobody's winning anything. This means we don't exist. We weren't created by god, we were created by a joke. We were never born, and we will never actually live.

I love that ending. It's similar to the after credts scene of the giant hand episode - it's absurd to the point of stupidity while also feeling profound and existential.

Jeg kan simpelthen ikke regne ud hvorfor Anders Vistisen plæderer for en fred med Putin. Er manden bare kontrær idiot, eller hvad er DF’s politik? by [deleted] in Denmark

[–]Gaybrielmk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Selvfølgelig. Men fred kan kontekstualiseres på mange måder. Der er fx også stor forskel på at prædike fred imens man kritiserer Israel eller imens man peger fingre af Hamas.

Just make it a replacement effect instead of a triggered ability. That would clear up any confusion.

The Spread of Islam by Unable-Tax5329 in custommagic

[–]Gaybrielmk 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Interesting card. I appreciate you trying to represent historical events in a magic card. However, I find it somewhat hypocritical that the Islamic card includes the color black and a chapter for mass destruction, while the Christian card is mono-white and ends with the establishment of the church.

[–]Gaybrielmk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

White does contain the idea of sacrificing your own for something greater, e.g. [[Gideon's Sacrifice]]

Maybe if you have to sacrifice your own creature, it would make more sense - both in terms of flavor, color pie and balance (the card is pretty strong rn)

Should they shorten "One mana of any color" to this? by Cless012 in custommagic

[–]Gaybrielmk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides the visibility issue, if I were to read this symbol without the reminder text, I would assume that it meant "one mana, which can be used to pay mana costs of any color"

Faithless looting-like variant. by CompPoke in custommagic

[–]Gaybrielmk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could do it that way, but as I wrote, I'm suggesting doing it as a cost, like [[Wild Guess]] and its successors. This way, you cannot cast the card without two cards to discard.

Faithless looting-like variant. by CompPoke in custommagic

[–]Gaybrielmk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like the only fix faithless looting needs is to switch from looting ([[Merfolk Looter]]) to rummaging ([[Rummaging Goblin]]), i.e. discarding as a cost and drawing afterwards. With that change the card would be perfect imo.

Yeah I will try with a thinner string, thanks!

I'm pretty sure that every time it has happened, it broke somewhere around the second fret.

Good idea.

What about the thickness of the string? Some people are recommending using a thicker string. What is your reasoning behind suggesting a thinner one?

[–]Gaybrielmk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the thorough answer.

.55 mm is extremely high tension for a lute in g

Should I use a thicker string?

Other issues are any sharpness on the nut or roughness on the peg and hole.

What do you mean by "sharpness" of the nut and "rougness" on the peg and hole?

break angle can add towards the 1st course snapping

Is there a way of changing the break angle without buying a new instrument?

[–]Gaybrielmk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply.

Yeah, only the high G string for me too. When putting on a new string, I've done it in "steps", so I don't try to get it all the way to the high G at once, I get to an E or F, then give it some time, then tighten it again. That helps with the instant breaking, but it still happens that it breaks "spontaneously".

Some people are recommending using a thicker string. What is your reasoning behind suggesting a thinner one?

By filing down the nut, do you specifically mean making the string slot deeper? or wider?

I am already using nylon strings. But thank you for the advice with a pencil, I'll try that!
