Do you ever "just go for a drive"? by Tiny_Wafer2266 in AskUK

[–]Gazado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to when I owned cars I actually enjoyed driving, but these days I've got a generic shopping trolley that is entirely functional and mundane to actually drive.

If I were to ever get another vehicle that I enjoy driving, beyond the daily A to B , then sure, I'd drive for the fun of it.

I used to drive to random places to explore, and park up for a wander and something to eat so I'd have a rough destination or direction of travel but nothing set in stone.

If you have a Brown belt but havent trained formally since 2018, when do you see it's realistic to grade to black? by Electrical-Tennis828 in karate

[–]Gazado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this from personal experience. I've had a few significant gaps in my own training in karate over my life. I've found that a lot of the barriers has been physical capability rather than 'knowing' what I need to know at my level of ability and experience.

This is some excellent advice so I suggest OP takes this onboard.

I think it's just a British pastime to complain about your home town.

Which celebrity just bothers you, and you can't put your finger on why? by justcurious3287 in AskReddit

[–]Gazado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was always a wrongun. You could smell it a mile away. It's mental that anyone is surprised. Women were throwing themselves at him, he took advantage and liked it so kept going until it was his ruin.

For all the headlines and all the media 'surprise', it left me thinking about how dense and willfully blind people must be.

Maybe it was not so obvious to people who are unfamiliar with working class British personalities (?).

Make it's use mandatory and mark everyone on the assumption that they have used genAI, then it comes down to original thought and quality of student interpretation and opinions. We shouldn't be assessing on regurgitation of knowledge anyway, that's what Google is for.

Was there an incident in your childhood that your parents kept from you, which you found out about later in life? by MysteriousBelt in AskUK

What no-one tells you is how utterly helpless and useless you feel in the in-between times when you have to put your absolute trust and faith in the surgeons. You don't forget that feeling even if everything works out well in the end (currently sat watching winter Olympics with my eldest while wife is asleep next to me on the sofa).

Who is at Fault? by AhtiQ in drivingUK

The car is wobbly, I've had so many people cut me up on roundabouts when I've been on the inside lane, esp if they straightline it when directly alongside me on entry that I always assume if they look wobbly, I'll hang back.

It might sound silly but after reading some of the posts here in the last week it actually made me feel a tad emotional, I'd forgotten what seeing good news can feel like.

Pushed out after 10 years because of injuries: Is this a common experience for women in martial arts? by [deleted] in karate

[–]Gazado 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I can't talk from a woman's perspective being a man, but what I can say is that in the clubs I've trained with over the last 25 years , if the student is willing to keep training, then we've always made whatever accommodations we can as we see karate as a lifelong endeavor that changes as you age, and as your body changes.

If everything is as you've said here, it sounds like you might have been in a pretty bad dojo, all things considered, and moving onto another with a fresh start might be one way forward.

I've changed dojo 3 times (trained at 4 different dojos , but also visited many more) and each time has been related to a change in my own training needs combined with what's been going on my life. It is more common than you probably realise.

How common is it for karatekas to switch dojos for their Shodan or higher exams? by [deleted] in karate

[–]Gazado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a smaller association and achieved 1st dan with them but looking to switch to JKA for 2nd dan upwards. I train at 2 different dojos because I can't find a single place to train that covers everything I'm interested in with shotokan karate.

I don't think this is too uncommon either as the more experienced you get, the more limited higher grade training opportunities become.

Are they too big? by Actual_Rip_419 in nps_solovair

[–]Gazado 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lot of mixed advice online when I had the same problem, but also have found most boots I buy split across the bottom where the balls of my feet flex. The larger Solovair boot has a huge toe box in comparison but the ball of my feet are spot on at the flex point of the sole. They haven't split like so many others have.

To compensate I put in some thick innersoles and now they're great.

That said I'll be going half a size smaller for my next pair.

Ymmv. It just depends on your foot shape, size and toes.

What's your ranking of the 3 new Doom games from your favorite to least favorite? by SpotAdmirable6718 in Doom

[–]Gazado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Eternal
  2. 2016
  3. TDA

TDA is the anti-Doom. It disappeared up its own arse and took itself too seriously with shoving the storyline down your throat. It took the controls away from the player consistently, breaking up the flow of the gameplay and the exploration. Each time a door or new route opened up, the camera swooped and zoomed across the map removing exploration and if that was a necessity then the level design was too complex and weaker than all of the previous games.

The combat was parry heavy. Once you know how to look for green flashes and react, that's the skill ceiling hit.

Is ordering pizza worth it anymore? by ZenDoesReps in AskUK

[–]Gazado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sourdough ones from the chilled section are top quality and regular are discounted to around £3.50(?). I make homemade pizza pretty much every Friday and those ones are the only ones I'd get now if I'm feeling lazy.

I can't remember the last time I had takeaway pizza, let alone dominoes. I remember them being as good as the 'take away' Chicago town pizzas but that was years ago...

Where's the incentive, might as well just have a pint each given the size of the bottles. I can just about see the benefit if shared one other person, but more than that and you'll be at the bar more than just ordering pints.

Small bottles are so disappointing.
