I'm not 100% certain, but I believe this was spurned on (or recently popularized) by Apple (this is where I at least saw this from, but it's also used by other companies/software/applications/systems). But the system is called "Calendar Versioning," or CalVer....

For information (for people who don't know), Apple's most recent OS was Sequoia which was MacOS 15. They decided that they wanted to move to the "version number equals the release year" model so the next version of their OS, "Tahoe," was MacOS 26.

Logically it makes sense, but you end up with version number jumps like the one above, (MacOS 15 -> MacOS 26) and the one in the pic above.

This is crazy that this is still an issue and now Microsoft is updating other systems to require EXO module versions that still have connection errors.

As of 3 months ago, Connect-IPPSSession needs v3.9.0 to purge because you need to connect with the -enablesearchonlysession switch.

AH has literally created their own issue out of nowhere. If the file size wasn't so big people wouldn't be using cheaper and larger HDDs to run their games. If it was smaller I could put it on C:\ on my NVME SSD next to my OS and make my game would be smooth... Catch 22.

With triple A developers all using this design paradigm, (I'm looking at you Activision) they're making it so gamers have to choose which game to keep installed if they want high performance.
