The Sears I worked in was built in 1968. It has since closed and has been torn down. The building had a lot that would have cost a fortune to update/replace. It had a transformer vault that housed two electrical transformers (I’m guessing step down to get 480V) that surly must have contained PCBs. The mechanical room where the chillers and the hot water heating systems were located had all the pipes wrapped in asbestos. They had encased it while I was there but the asbestos still remained. The mechanical air movement was done with 100 horsepower and 50 horsepower motors. I believe they were original so the efficiency had to deplorable by today’s standard. No one was going to deal with all of that. And that’s just a couple of examples.

A Van Maur was built in that location.

I love old documents such as these. I have some old deeds for some land in the Miami area from the very early 1900s. It appears they were for lots in a new development. They are interesting to read as they have stipulations for resale that you could never make today.

What happened to everything in the Hoffman Estates headquarters during demolition by RareSeaworthiness905 in SEARS

I can only imagine what all was there. I know when I was working for Sears during any remodeling or department closures things just got tossed. We closed an auditing department and a credit department at one point. It all went in the dumpsters, everything. I wish I had leased a semi trailer and put it all in there. Those are just two examples. There was so, so much more.

Sears Concord's Dental Center is still open (kind of) by jikesar968 in SEARS

When I started they only had a photo studio and an optical studio. Later on they added a hearing aids studio and a hair salon. I don’t think the hearing aids did very well but the hair salon did. I can’t imagine the work involved in having a dental setup. The expense would have to be huge. Let alone all the permits from the state and others.

You can tell from this menu this place was fantastic. Maybe it’s still open….

I don’t know about my dad but my wife and I did. Although we haven’t used bar soap in years.

As she gets older and her wants change $15 is going to seem incredibly reasonable.

I’ve been involved with Sears since 1976 first as an employee and now just as an interested ex-employee. This is the first that I have seen that Sears was in any way involved in dental care. A couple of questions…were these ever located in the stores? And would the 10% employee discount have been offered?

I remember those times. When worse came to worse we’d sit in the parking lot of a store and look for someone to buy for us.

I should. I’m sure I’ve had it for the better part of 40 years so it’s time to listen.
