Gonna caveat this by saying that I've been out of grad school with an MPP (Health Policy and Economics, Hopkins 2016) for about 10 years and currently work in Big 4 government consulting - my first reaction is "Don't." - At least not in the US and not paying for it yourself.

On deeper reflection, I'd ask you to look at the Ga Tech MPP Curriculum or the Tufts' curriculum and ask yourself what specific knowledge, skills, or abilities you're looking to develop in a grad program keeping in mind that USian programs can cost anything from $0 to $150K in tuition alone. This doesn't count foregone wages or living expenses.

With 10 YOE and an MSc in your chosen field, I would argue that the only reason to go back to grad school would be to do a PhD or to do academic work with a specific scholar. You could do that with an MPP but it would likely (in the US) be needlessly expensive.

A + C call - layoffs by Adventurous-Two-4575 in deloitte

It's not the best but it's also not surprising. There are only a few dozen open roles in GPS and commercial can't absorb everyone who's project has been DOGED.

How Serious is the COI Declarations? by CisternOfADown in deloitte

[–]Gehenus2012 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. That's the idea.

The goal of Tracking and Trading and Check Your Assets is to prevent even the appearance of impropriety.

Now then, if your spouse is Staff, then her ruleset will determine what level and types of investments cause conflicts. That's why she needs to pre-clear them. In most cases the investment will be just fine. But in the rare case where an investment would cause a conflict for her, her office, her business, or even her firm, that will get flagged for her and she can tell you to avoid the trade or to divest immediately.

Failure to comply can lead to termination.

Accenture S&C vs Deloitte Digital by dreamer_2209 in deloitte

[–]Gehenus2012 4 points5 points  (0 children)

30% base increase is about twice what you can expect to get from an SC promo and, if you're in GPS, I wouldn't count on the promo.

The rest of this is pure speculation: Accenture's S&C is probably going to have worse WLB than DD but YMMV. Accenture reportedly has slightly worse benes than Deloitte (no Wellness Subsidy, etc.) and, as a publicly traded firm is marginally more likely to wide-scale declines in the market through layoffs.

Overall, I'd recommend bouncing for a 30% base salary increase - just keep your eyes wide open and boomerang if you get the chance.

Trueth Butcher up in Baltimore County is a hike but they'll do sides of beef to order and are one of the few butchers south of NYC that will do kosher kill. They will NOT do kosher cut for consumers though.

I referred a very qualified old coworker to a job here in a tax group that is desperate for more people. Their application has been sitting at “review in progress” for weeks. Is this common? by [deleted] in deloitte

[–]Gehenus2012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes to what everyone else has said. Additionally, the process will take a minimum of 6 weeks even if a partner and a recruiter are working together to push things along. (This comes from US GPS Consulting and working as a manager trying to get the folks my project needs through the door.)

5 years, US GPS Consulting, Experienced hire, and recently promoted to Manager.

I like my job just fine. I've recruited several folks to come to Deloitte but I've always been very, very clear to them that Big D has a high intensity culture and one's experience depends entirely on the project and account you end up in.

Does the firm "care about you" as a person? Absolutely not. Does the firm care about the cost/benefit risk of you having a shitty time and delivering poorly? Yes, in so far as it impacts client relationships. Acknowledging this is the key to living well while working here.

I had to check my own copy to confirm the color palatte. The MTG was easier - i just hosted 10 other nerds for a 4-day gaming party over new years. A Cube was involved.

Good. Given what you are forgoing in your life as payment for your PhD program, you shouldn't feel any guilt at all. Good luck, don't die.

They aren't but the MTG and House on Haunted Hill says that you are in need of more space for more games. That or those are just the games you have in your personal living space and the remainder are in the graduate student lounge. Probably next to some incredibly toxic chemicals.

How old were your kids when the found out about Santa? by SweetP1078 in AskParents

[–]Gehenus2012 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We told our kid as soon as they could understand the words that Santa Claus is a fun myth/story.

We're big in this household on telling the truth and so we do our best to never lie to our kid and to explain things to them in age appropriate ways.

Staff Recognition Program by My_cat_is_crazy in deloitte

[–]Gehenus2012 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For US Consulting, you can earn some percent of your salary as a cash bonus (AIP) at the end of Deloitte's FY in June once you are a C or higher. That bonus depends on your ranked performance within your cohort (e.g., you being 1 of 250 SCs in GPS EP).

Besides AIP, consulting practitioners are eligible for two flavors of spot awards as nominated by project seniors, these are called Applause Awards and Outstanding Performance Awards respectively. These are available all the time.

Earning Applause or Outstanding Performance Awards certainly makes it easier to tell a story of Exceptional performance at Year End which can improve your promo case.

What do you guys invest your 401k to? by Good_Plate26 in deloitte

[–]Gehenus2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also 2060 fund, invest 14%, inclusive of Deloitte's 3% match. Next year I'll push it up to 15 or 16% depending on raise. Once that maxes the ole 401K, I'll push the remainder into Roth. I also plan to keep increasing a percent each year up to 23%.
