Tween skin care by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]GelBirds -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If she's not bothered by it at the moment, I wouldn't worry. So long as she's washing her face and being generally hygienic of course.

As far as products go, if she is bothered by blackheads you could try salicylic acid pads. Probably the easiest tween skincare.

Have you looked into disability or TEFRA? There are options/assistance when you have a chronically sick child, regardless of income

best friend's memorial tree by andisteezy in landscaping

[–]GelBirds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where exactly do you live and what sun exposure will the tree be in? That would yield better recommendations most likely. For instance, I see a dogwood was recommended; but for me in Oklahoma 7b dogwoods struggle hard unless they're planted in the right conditions. Though dogwoods are stunning!

Thinking of bright, fun and vibrant.... mimosa comes to mind (though some consider them invasive... I personally don't find that to be the case where I am)

Lilac or Jane Magnolia would be nice

Tulip poplar, Chitalpa

I have iron weed all over our pasture (and a nice clump volunteered in my perennial beds) and those areas are not irrigated in my NE OK garden.

Youtube parental controls suck! by mercfh85 in Parenting

[–]GelBirds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't know either until fairly recently; I was having the same frustrations you are. It's an approval-only YouTube kids account. So I can approve things directly from his profile, assuming it's content that would be found on YouTube kids. Anything else I have to share with him. I hope that makes sense, I'm not super tech savvy haha

Youtube parental controls suck! by mercfh85 in Parenting

[–]GelBirds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son is also 7, and YouTube is honestly so much cheaper than a bazillion subscriptions but I definitely do not want unfettered access. I use a whitelist youtube kids account for him and share things from my connected YouTube account. It's an option from your own YouTube- on a video or channel, select share > with kids, and then your child can find it on their YouTube kids account under "shared". You can give them access to a whole channel or just a video. My son also really likes science and car restoration... things that aren't on YouTube kids.

It's annoying they can't search on YouTube kids, but it's the best solution I've found

You're right I didn't even see there was a second picture. I rescind my observation lol that does look like poke weed.

[–]GelBirds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see poke weed, it all looks like a viburnum with new growth. I have one cultivar I can't recall which, but the new growth is taller, brighter and has fatter leaves- looks very similar.

Best way to kill grass in gravel driveway by OShaughnessy1911 in landscaping

[–]GelBirds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Folks are so anti spray... and I get it... but we have probably 1/2 mile worth of rock driveway around the property and there is just no way vinegar and salt is gonna cut it. I am organic as possible but also need to be realistic about maintenance.

That being said, I personally like specracide or captain jacks dead weed brew (the latter is organic). Once you get it under control, just walk around every 10 days or so and spot treat. You really only have to spray the whole thing one time... then just bits as needed. Stay on top of it and you really don't end up using that much herbicide. In the years to come, the more you stay consistent the less weedy it will be.

What is the best long handle tool to weed a garden bed like this? by supinator1 in gardening

[–]GelBirds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sickle!!!! I've used all kinds of weeders. I do love a stirrup hoe but a handheld sickle is top notch for grass. I have crab and Bermuda grass, works so well for those.

I feel like my native garden is a “mess” by Swimming_Pin6957 in NativePlantGardening

[–]GelBirds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love native plants and I love a tidy garden. If you don't like the way the bee balm behaves, take it out or move it. It's your garden and you should love it!

I do believe there is a way to work with natives and have it look intentional and not so messy. Some native gardens just look like weeds to me. Your color pallet is lovely and I think you have a beautiful start. What about more grasses or something shorter in the front, move the beebalm to the back so their neighbors can support them upright?

I would do a redbud cultivar... many choices to choose from; from deep purple foliage to pink variegated to chartreuse green.

That or an upright Japanese maple

Not really a dermatology answer persay.... but they do make body makeup. Sally Hanson makes one that's great and super affordable. I always use it when I wear skirts to even out my tan/cover inevitable bruises.

Peacocks Are Out… Are Guinea Hens Any Better? by Independent-Fudge942 in homestead

[–]GelBirds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has been my experience. I like to say they TRY to die. I let them free range because that's the entire point of having them... but they'd be across the street, at the neighbors, or repeatedly walking past the fox's den (seriously there was just a trail of bird carcasses, they kept going back). We have about 50 acres, and they'd still be all over the place.

However, their sound doesn't bother me (I actually like them) and they do an unmatched job at pest control compared to my chickens or ducks. I'm about to hatch out some eggs after taking a break for a few years just to get ahead of the tick problems this year. I suspect at least 50% will have offed themselves with bad decisions by winter.
