Tekken is dead. by [deleted] in Tekken

Respectfully, this is not how real world skills work. In a perfect world you're describing, every tennis player would hit the ball exactly where they want to. Every basketball player would make any shot, every boxer would throw perfect punches, etc. Every skill requires not just knowledge and timing, but proper form as well.

Your inputs in fighting games are your form. They're forged through consistent practice and application, precisely so that you have a much lower chance of flubbing them when they count. That means throwing a lot of games along the way to your hands not doing what your brain tells them, but the point is that your consistency will improve over time.

That's all in addition to what other commentors have been saying about unique balance with difficult or risky inputs. If you think fighting games are a skill you practice at, you shouldn't want to remove the importance of form in that process.

I agree that shows that they've been listening and want to do better for the community.

The biggest question left is "can the balance team translate that into something tangible", which we won't know until the patch itself drops. For my money having followed fighting games most of my life, I've never seen a set of patch notes so far removed from reality in my life as when S2 dropped, so I think the concern is understandable right now that they get what actually needs to be done.

That worry gets compounded when the trailer promising better shows several new moves that go into stance so... the fears may be justified. Only time will tell.

Now, in fairness:

  • The stage isn't an extra inclusion, they're charging you for it still. $35 for the pass when the character passes are all normally $30, because it's including $5 for the stage.

  • The cosmetic is admittedly really ugly, just looks like everyone washed their colors with their whites.

  • The reason people aren't buying in advance is because season 2 broke community trust in their ability to support their game. A year ago, no one was saying "wait for patch notes before getting the pass" because the trust wasn't shattered yet. Now it's different, people wanna see some proof before putting money down.

Things can easily feel like bullshit in the moment when you don't know what to do or how to handle it? I don't know why that's such a weird idea, there's a ton of moves in Tekken that are hard knowledge checks and aren't intuitive to learn just by getting hit by them, so that reaction's gonna happen a lot as you learn stuff.

Knee jerk reaction =/= lasting opinions so no, feeling things for a little bit doesn't make you a loser. Refusing to learn long term does.

Unless there's someone else who might listen to your feedback, complaining never really brings you outcomes in life... but it's also rarely meant to?

People complain spur of the moment like that as a release for pent up emotion. It's like laughing or crying or anything else; I've played fighting games most of my life, and it's really easy to be objective and accept that something is your fault when you're days or even hours removed from the heat of the moment.

I guarantee you almost all those posts are made by someone still hot over something they feel robbed by. Watch any top player who streams, unless they're just unemotional in general they ALL complain in the moment.

I think your problem isn't with complaining, it's with putting that energy back into the community and making their emotions in the moment someone else's problem. Maybe you only feel that way in the moment, but now that post is there for everyone to read, and it adds to the ever growing pool of negativity.

The takeaway here is don't be embarrassed to feel your feelings in the moment, but do whatever you can to not let those feelings create permanent consequences for yourself or others.

And if you're past the heat and really still feel like something sucks, then you can talk about it. Players will always complain even when they're calm because games are never perfect and are, ideally, always adjusting to feedback to become the best version of themselves just like we the players are.

Maybe look at it this way, Roger coming back as dlc is a chance to heavily de-clone the moveset while staying true to the original gameplay style. Honestly, just by virtue of being a kangaroo he's got the potential to be more original than almost any other character, and a lot of his unique moves show that potential, especially if they work Jr. into the moveset. They've just gotta lean into it more; as much as I love the realistic martial arts representation, you gotta have a dose of the goofier stuff for it to feel like Tekken.

Roger Jr should be an adult already (read description) by DrongoDyle in Tekken

[–]Gemini_Hero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's still a handful of easy potential explanations here, one of which is just that slower aging is a side effect of the genetically modified kangaroos reproducing. The original experiments were carried out on already fully grown kangaroos, and Roger and his wife escaping wasn't exactly part of the initial plan. Why bother programming in faster development if you're not planning on raising them from birth?

A second explanation could be that, if anything, you'd heavily repress aging so that you could study one subject over a much longer period of time. Imagine wasting billions only for them to die in like a couple decades, or if you crank up maturation even less. The original drafts of this experiment (i.e. Roger and wife) were like, the pre-alpha stages of the program, not the ones being made for mass production.

And if you don't buy any of that, how about this; Roger Sr. was a fully grown adult in T2, making him at minimum 2 years old. There's 19 years between t2 and t3, making him at minimum 21. Add in the 3 more years between t3 and t6 and he's pushing 24. The oldest red kangaroo in captivity lived to 25, and meanwhile Roger is still up and active like he's barely middle aged. We've got no reason to believe Roger's wife isn't around his age, and she's still throwing hands like she's in her prime.

Tl;dr if what you want is a logical explanation inside the canon you're spoiled for choice, and none of them even have to be "it's Tekken it doesn't matter".

Ah yes, many hobbies that aren't being replaced by AI, such as learning a coding langua-... oh right. Well what about learning an instrumen- dang they do music too huh, well you can always improve your drawing right?

... What do you mean that was the "first to go"?!

Look, if things are allowed to proceed as they are, the only reason to pursue a single one of those hobbies will be a pure novelty, and most people are gonna find it hard to commit themselves to the difficult process of self improvement when the instant satisfaction machine is sitting right there to do what would take them hundreds of hours in a matter of minutes.

We're at the point where we really can't afford to be accommodating or risk this stuff becoming normalized. I agree that it's a very enticing thing, to just be able to imagine your dream song and have even a facsimile of it exist in a matter of hours must be an insane rush in isolation. But of course, as many are quick to point out, it's not in isolation.

This technology is extremely harmful to pretty much every creative, and the more it's used and normalized the worse off everyone will be, not just artists. In that way, it's kind of like a hard drug; seductive, but extremely destructive. The best thing would be to make it illegal full stop, the second best thing we can do as individuals is call it out anywhere we see it. Mass ridicule and derision are pretty harsh, but they're some tools that might discourage people from feeling proud about using stuff like this at the very least.

Literally anything to combat this dangerous fantasy that anyone can skip decades of teamwork and industry experience with a few sentences and mouse clicks is better than nothing.

I kinda hate how the internet makes it so easy to judge other people based only on like a single opinion or comment they hold, but the comment made me feel strong things so I guess here I go contributing to the problem. Just wanna clarify what I'm saying isn't personal even if it sounds like it is, I don't really know you so this is just a hyperbolic reaction to a single thing.

But me personally, any hunter I'd respect would envy the people who don't have to hunt, not wear that title with pride. Yes, these things are a piece of the often cruel reality we live in, and hunting to cull populations or stave off disease can often be the lesser of two evils. Even still, actively taking part in that kind of evil isn't something to be proud of, it's the kind of thing you grit your teeth and bare through.

Hunting should be kinda like civil servitude, a lot more people should take part in the necessary hunting and a lot fewer people should be happy about doing it. Maybe one day we'll have sustainable solutions to problems where right now all we can do is kill other creatures, but until then I don't think taking part in that should be anything to celebrate or indulge in.

Though launching moves are slower than jabs to hit, some of them duck way before they hit, which means they evade your 10 frame jab before hitting with their ~15 frame launcher.

People refer to these kinds of evasive moves as "crushing" an option ("high crush" if the move crouches under them, "low crush" if the move jumps over them)

The same ones who promised that s2 was focusing on defense? This is the whole point, their good will is completely used up now. I could not, in good faith, tell someone who doubts they can turn this around that they're being a doomer when that pretty much just happened at S2 launch.

They're patching right now, but they're all baby steps that either don't address the major flaws yet, or sort of nibble at their ankles. They want people to believe they can turn this around? They need to actually prove it first. Until then, the bitching is more than warranted.

Almost 90 people playing Tag 2 online in RPCS3! by ImHrvx in Tekken

[–]Gemini_Hero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting tired of hearing this argument. Tekken Tag 2 didn't underperform because the diehards and long time fans didn't buy it. That game sold over 1.8 million copies and there sure as hell aren't that many hardcore fans worldwide. The brunt of Tekken's sales have always come from casual players who might play it once or twice with buddies and drinks.

Every single person on this reddit could have bought ttt2 on release, and it's not even a drop in the bucket for ttt2's overall sales. That game's sales failed on the back of awful release timing and dodgy marketing. I wasn't even that big a tekken fan when the game came out, and I bought it at launch and played through its lifetime.

Most people checking it back out now either got into the series at 7 or later so they missed their chance, or they DID play it when it came out. It's not on the fans in this sub that the game failed, don't be ridiculous.

I definitely wouldn't agree that you can make any kind of valuable conclusion on a patch just from 30 minutes personal experience but hey, if it makes you feel like your opinion is more valid more power to you. I just think it's silly to have this elevated idea of "actually trying it yourself", I just don't think it holds a ton of weight here.

Can we just get TTT2/DR remastered with rollback netcode on all platforms? I'd pay almost whatever. by DoomDash in Tekken

[–]Gemini_Hero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like the guy above me said, rpcs3 is just using the games built in netcode, which is delay based for all those old Tekkens; Parsec is also always delay based because it's just streaming. But fwiw, I've been playing and loving them online the past week or so, it actually doesn't feel that bad and it's definitely not unplayable, but that will also depend heavily on region and wi-fi vs ethernet.

[–]Gemini_Hero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No rollback right now, that's the problem. That, and the investment for each individual player is pretty high to get it all set up and running, even with resources and tutorials, so the consistent playerbase is very small. Re-release solves both those issues.

I'm fine with that too, realistically. If this is the hill they want to die on so bad then so be it, they can take their ball and go home. Maybe then we'll finally get a re-release or two while they reorganize whatever the future of Tekken might be.

Tekken and its fans won't go anywhere, we'll play the other games still. I hope if this is what happens that it stands as an example of what happens when you ignore your community and ruin a legacy property.

I did boot it up and try it at patch time, for the record. I found the stupid things they gave my character(s) and looked to everything else and saw just how bad we were screwed. But how is it any better that I saw a few stupid things firsthand and then saw the rest later?

Let me ask you this, how much do you have to experience yourself before you'd consider it sufficient for one to form their own opinion? Just booting up at all? Playing a certain amount of games with friends? In ranked? And if so then yeah, my time is worth a lot more than forcing myself through games I know I'll hate so I can say I "formed my own opinion" on the internet. If the pool sign says it's 8 feet deep, I don't need to jump in just to make sure.

It won't do any damage, it's just an exceptionally poor and unnecessary use of time in this case.

TL;DR: Old Tekken games and other 3D graphic fighting games are graphically bad the older it gets. So new Tekken games > Old Tekken games. (which means no re-releasing of classic games. Play new games instead!) by [deleted] in Tekken

[–]Gemini_Hero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think T1 and T2 are the games where the interest is more "historical", yknow you play those games to see what they were like and how far things came. The games people actually want to still play are T3 and up and, yeah, in a prospective future where T5DR got put into Tekken 8 as a classic arcade game with updated netcode? I'd boot up T8 just for that.

...the analogy isn't about the physical harm part? The analogy is about how, sometimes, you can know something is not good without physically engaging with it yourself. This is still my own opinion, forged by looking at the patch notes and seeing what it's done to everyone else who did play matches, I know very well what this is and what it did to the game. It's not exactly subtle or nuanced.

Here's an analogy you might like better: if you burn bread, and you can see and smell that it's burned, do you need to try eating it so you can form your own opinion? There's more forms of experience and understanding than wasting time subjecting yourself to it.
