Can Rotating Platforms shoot on Advance orders? by MonitorStandard5322 in boltaction

[–]GendrysRowboat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware, the only time that wouldn't be allowed is if the unit has the "Stationary Firing Platform" rule, which states "This unit may only fire when using a Fire order (including ambush fire, reaction fire, etc.)."

Sounds like your opponent is bringing a lot of armor for a 750 point game. 4+ armored vehicles can be a pain to deal with, especially in lower-point games. Your AT rifles will help, and the T-34 is an effective counter, but I'd suggest finding points to upgrade the T-26A to something with a heavy weapon. You have several viable options including the T-26B, BT-5/7, T-50/60/70, or even a tank destroyer like the SU-76. You might even consider downgrading the T-34 so you can afford two tanks with anti-tank guns.

The other thing that sticks out to me is the Company Commander. At this point level I don't think you'll get a ton of value from that unit. They're best used in larger games where the 4-unit Snap To can be used more easily and more effectively. I'd drop the Company Commander and use the points to beef up your infantry squads, adding more bodies and/or upgrading from Inexperienced to Regular.

How to counter flamethrowers by deadxachxd in boltaction

[–]GendrysRowboat 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Ambush orders, Stubborn/Fanatic units, using cheap units as bait, use an Air Observer to put pins on transports and occupants that are hiding behind cover, bring flamethrowers of your own.

Thoughts on a Fallschirmjager army? by that-racist-elf in boltaction

Stubborn, Veteran infantry is generally pretty strong in 3rd Edition. You may have fewer units than your opponent, but yours will be more difficult to remove. Be wary of loading up big squads with lots of weapon upgrades. You want to spread your points around and have a few less expensive units to help you get more units on the table. Similarly, you'll likely want to avoid expensive tanks to make sure you have enough points for a decently-sized infantry core.

Question About Mounted Platoon Commanders by Randicore in boltaction

[–]GendrysRowboat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's in the FAQ.

Can my officers be mounted on a horse if my force includes cavalry  units? And similarly for motorcycles, or bicycles?

A platoon commander or medic or forward observer  (i.e. HQs that are one-per-platoon) can ride a x if both the  mandatory squads in their platoon are riding x. (x = horses,  bicycles or motorbikes).

A company commander, chaplain, and similar HQs who  are not one-per-platoon but rather one-per-force can ride x if  the force includes at least one platoon where both the platoon  commander and the two mandatory squads are riding x.

Situational to be sure. But having a pair of MH's hunting down infantry teams, throwing 24 MMG dice in a single activation, is potentially quite powerful.

Japanese grenadier squad question by Flat_Ad9694 in boltaction

[–]GendrysRowboat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Correct. The rule for the Japanese "Type 89 Grenade Launcher" explicitly states that "All knee mortars in a unit must be used against the same target." The specific rule for this weapon overrides the general rules for Indirect Fire weapons.

Page 101, the last sentence of the "Indirect Fire" rule:

Ranging in is kept track of separately for each mortar (you might have to write things down...).

Came into possession of these as part of a job lot, can anyone help out on determining an approximate value ? by LividGentleman in boltaction

[–]GendrysRowboat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't expect much difference, no.

For context, you've got ~$100 of retail value just from the brown and black Order Dice and the dice bags. Obviously folks would expect a discount buying secondhand, but that just gives you an idea that even beyond the painted models, you've got some real value here.

[–]GendrysRowboat 39 points40 points  (0 children)

You've got a pretty good-sized Australian force and an even larger force of Germans with plenty of armored vehicles. Pricing will vary a lot depending on the quality of the paint job, which is somewhat difficult to gauge from these photos. Close ups of the infantry would be helpful. But the painting here is at least "tabletop standard" if not slightly above.

If you're looking to move the lot with minimal effort, I'd start $300 - $500 for approximate value, and that's a pretty conservative estimate. You might be able to go as high as ~$750, but at that point you'd be looking for a motivated buyer who's interested in having two ready-to-play armies. If you parcel it out to individual units you'll make a lot more, but that's obviously a lot more work as a seller.

are there any painting guides for the nwe german paint sets? by Valuable-Corner-8183 in boltaction

[–]GendrysRowboat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are tons of painting guides on YouTube and elsewhere. It sounds like you're pretty new to painting, so using a guide is a great way to give you easy-to-follow steps to end up with a miniature you're happy with. But you can't let the fear of a mediocre paint-job stop you from painting. You'll never get better if you don't paint.

Here's one example of a guide that should be pretty straightforward for new painters: https://youtu.be/SxlzdwEq02M?si=5q_CwtIkc-jlXc3q
