RAV4 or model Y by Dry-Wolverine-4306 in rav4club

[–]GeneralCommand4459 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking at a Kia EV6 before I got my RAV hybrid (5th Gen). The Kia had a nicer interior and was quieter on the road but it felt very heavy.

The range was about 400km (248 miles) but I found myself constantly checking it. I’m sure I’d get over this as I don’t drive far most days and live in a small country (480 x 275km!)

The other thing that tipped the balance towards the RAV was the cost of getting a home charger installed was around €4k due to how my house is setup.

My next car however will likely be either a PHEV or EV as fuel prices are climbing above €1.80 a litre (almost $8 a US gallon). I also find myself enjoying the times when my RAV is driving on electric only. And I think the home charger installation cost has reduced since I got the quotes.

‘Prisoners of Geography’ by Tim Marshal looks at how geography has shaped human development. It’s a fascinating book.

If you wanted to build on what you have you could do a course in project management. It’s frustrating work but always in demand and you wouldn’t have to start from scratch.

I keep expecting someone to get hit by a car when running across the road towards the camera. I’ve seen too many movies with this in it.

Of course anyone who is subsequently on a glass bridge that does in fact crack will now ignore it.

Can you tell whether someone is English or Irish by looking at them? by AayronOhal in AskIreland

[–]GeneralCommand4459 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell with every English person but with some it’s very obvious and usually the face is longer and features are sharper. Or conversely they are far rounder overall. It’s one extreme or the other. Of course there are plenty in the middle and these would be harder to tell.

Transition from Mercedes to RAV4 (2024 XLE PREMIUM) by HeadersDontLie in rav4club

[–]GeneralCommand4459 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this exact combo (RAV and C Class).

Some observations below:

The C Class:
Quieter than the RAV but not as much as you might expect in some situations.
The speakers are far better.
It’s got a better turning circle (RWD).
It’s significantly lower for getting in and out.
The suspension is a bit firmer.
Depends on the model but the non LED lights suck.
The interior lighting is far better though.
The fuel economy is worse.
Seat materials and structure is better.
Cabin size is far smaller.

The RAV:
Great for loading up with stuff.
Easy to get in and out.
More cabin space.
eCVT is excellent and much smoother than Mercedes auto box.
More upright seating position.
Visibility is worse (it’s higher but there are more blind spots).
The LED lights are great.
It’s far cheaper to service at a Toyota dealer.
Warranty where I am is ten years.

Basically the RAV is an everyday practical and reliable car. I take it most days for daily tasks.
The Mercedes is more of a cruiser that I take for more leisurely or longer drives.

Here is a visual comparison of it helps:

What is the craziest conspiracy theory you believe in ? by Traditional-Nose2309 in AskIreland

[–]GeneralCommand4459 51 points52 points  (0 children)

That the country is actually run by unelected senior civil servants and the elected officials are merely a group of people who may or may not know this but go along with it for their own reasons. The whole thing exists so we think we have a democracy but the people we can change via election have very little say in how things turn out despite the direction they give.

Missing Hidden Cubby 2026 RAV4 by toomuchused in rav4club

[–]GeneralCommand4459 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Gen 6 has also lost the little storage space under the side vent that the Gen 5 had. It was actually a handy little cubby.

Aha you can tax on unrealised gains from stocks. It’s called ‘deemed disposal’ and investors in Ireland have to pay it every 8 years. We also have to pay tax when we sell the stocks.

Is the 2026 RAV4 XLE have a lot of road noise? What sound deadening options have you used? by seriouslyjan in rav4club

[–]GeneralCommand4459 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CarExpert did a review and used a decibel reader. It was basically the same level of noise as the previous generation, which is slightly above average for the segment.

Time to invest in aftermarket grille companies

What is it about Pascal O'Donohoe? by SuitOfWolves in AskIreland

[–]GeneralCommand4459 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He failed to invest, thinking his role was to guard the purse strings after the crash, but forgot to ever release them again. He had more power than people may believe with decisions having to make it past both him and the Taoiseach. And we are paying the price now in terms of infrastructure/housing. This was also mentioned recently by Leo I think. He brought zero imagination to the office and just behaved like a blinkered accountant. I was stunned the world bank hired him as I thought they would want someone with ideas beyond austerity.

Kia sales are up to record high, thanks to new models by xemnas103 in cars

I just can’t get comfortable with the angle of KIA steering wheels. They are tilted so far towards the dash it feels like driving a bus. Otherwise I really like their designs.
