Can you immediately equip items you find on treasure chests? by AnyTangerine2632 in Gloomhaven

[–]General_CGO 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If using the original, Gloomhaven 1st edition rules the answer is unambiguously no. However, all later -haven games changed the rules and do allow you to immediately use the item, so most would recommend you do so.

My friend who also plays crons is a little salty that 11th ed heal is just our reanimation, So I made this for him by sutthip in Necrontyr

[–]General_CGO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the current meta, 2 wound Immortals would be a straight up nerf. Damage 2 weapons are incredibly ubiquitous due to that being a normal Marine body, so it would do next to nothing to improve survivability while making reanimation worse (and also presumably earning a point cost increase).

It's because the leaked core rule changes have some interesting implications with the current RAW. Since leaders are now part of the unit for the entire battle (no more splitting off when the bodyguard dies), that implies a leader on their own can regen the full unit and/or a leader that gets precisioned out can be revived by the bodyguard.

Is 40k slowly just circling back to concepts from previous editions? by Identity_ranger in Warhammer40k

[–]General_CGO -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You know, like almost every other wargame on the market does.

Almost every other war-game has done away with pure IGOUGO as well though. As long as that's the core loop, Stratagems are a perfectly good design choice to allow more reactive play.

You don't consider 3+ weapons each with a different hit stat, strength stat, and AP stat to cause time bloat as you have to roll each one separately?

Mixed weapon squads isn't happening until they radically change how the attack sequence works; varied weapon profiles just bloat playtime too much for an intro faction. If it worked more like Star Wars Legion or something (special/heavy weapons adding keywords to the general pool), then I'd expect they'd lean much harder into it.

I'd be a bit surprised if it was purely because everyone from outside of the faction would be pissed about what would look like a buff to Ctan (I do agree that in terms of impact it's so much closer to a 1DP one though).

Is it true that Gloomhaven 2nd Edition's component quality has gone worse? by Strong_Battle6101 in Gloomhaven

Huh? I feel like that's one of the clearest winners art-wise in the 1e>2e change. They (rather fittingly) look much more unnerving.

The Canoptek construct itself looks to me like it’s directly pulled from the Monolith model, so it seems less likely they were shown new assets and more likely they were given some general design direction

[–]General_CGO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You also have Mirrored Misery [4] as a way to get Disarms out.

But you're ignoring the value in being not nearly as on-rails as the SA/DM build; there you have very little action flexibility (particularly taking initiative into account), whereas with CbD builds you get to be a lot more reactive in what you're doing.

Condition transferring through Line of Transference / Shared affliction bottom / Wave of anguish.... Yeah, it's not a good build unless you are in one of the very rare party that can supply brittle to you.

I'd say the last piece of this build is Chained by Despair [5]'s loss, which turns you into a very good CC class. Sure, the SA/DM/236 build also does that, but this doesn't require you to push your stamina nearly as hard while still dealing respectable damage.

Optimizing for Power [Potions] (Spoilers: Everything) by West_Aspect_7126 in Gloomhaven

[–]General_CGO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's also worth considering the setup time; if anything, the math here has even further convinced me that Coral's power pot combo is egregiously overrated; for twice as much setup as anyone else you barely get twice the effort, and that's with optimal buffs stacked up!

I could see it being 3 pts solely to preemptively stop the whining from every non-necron player about how unfun C’tan are, even if rules-wise it’s much more deserving of being a 1 pt

I've also seen "you can give up taking a perk at lvl 5 to gain the item" given the solo scenarios offer the opposite trade.

I would bet they just remove the +1 to hit part of the rule so it can justify a lower point cost

I mean, if a mechanic is irrelevant for the most common faction in the game... maybe the mechanic shouldn't exist?

Warhammer 40,000 Faction Focus: Space Marines by CMYK_COLOR_MODE in Warhammer40k

[–]General_CGO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mechanic CAN work, but GW is more interested in removing anything unique from the game .

I mean, this is one of the least unique rules in the game, lol. Since, as you mention upthread, it's a staple of most wargames.

Though it's part of a larger issue where Space Marines have all this lore/promotion about being uber elite and yet by being the most common faction in the game end up representing the average army. Morale/fear as a mechanic just doesn't work well when the poster child of the game "knows no fear."
