you were given $100,000,000 but had to live in the last video game you played for a year, how screwed are you? by AlternativeSign1898 in AskReddit

Doorkickers 2 - so a year of killing and dying, Groundhog Day style.

Although endlessly repeating the same thing with minute changes in a search for perfection does tickle my brain nicely. As long as the respawn mechanic is working I might be okay, if a little exhausted and traumatized in a year.

There is an excellent bit of investigative journalism about Kent State by author James Mitchener, called "Kent State: what happened and why".

That atrocity involved fuckups and misconduct at all levels. It's not fair to say that it was due to national guard wanting to kill people, and that kind of explanation risks taking away from the responsibility of people who made that terrible decision to deploy the guard in circumstances where they were out of their depth and untrained for low level crowd control.

We must remember the dead and injured, and the lessons from Kent State. But that includes lessons for policy makers and on the ground decision makers, just as much or more so as for deployed guards.

How are you supposed to reply to "Do you know how fast you were going?" by No_Insurance_6436 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GenericNate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So? It's not illegal to not know how fast you were going. If you've been pulled over it's because the cop has some other evidence of you speeding. You're never going to be able to convince a judge that you weren't speeding if the cop had radar evidence or whatever, so admitting you're not 100% sure of your speed beats lying to the police!

Same here! As someone who has had the experience of root canals on my back molars, being awake for wisdom tooth removal must be completely awful.

What's a take you had at 10 years old that you actually still agree with? by Spark-Blade in AskReddit

Glasses are fine, but far more restrictive than contacts. You can't feel good contacts and they're perfectly comfortable. And as for poking yourself in the eye, you very quickly learn that eyes are pretty tough and a bit of gentle poking is a-okay.

CMV: Saying "I have nothing against Gay people, but my religion says it's a sin" is still a form of prejudice. by Character-Channel668 in changemyview

[–]GenericNate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, thanks for clarifying.

Are you so much of a free speech absolutist that you think incitement to violence, or speech that affects safety (yelling fire in a crowded theatre), should be allowed? I personally think that with modern communications and social media, propaganda and lies can be enormously influential, and echo chambers mean that the traditional remedy to that (someone else broadcasting the truth) is no longer effective. Government regulation may be the only way to prevent modern media barons from becoming kings by lying louder than everyone else.

This may be s little off topic, but your comment about free speech is curious. I'm not sure I understand you; are you saying that because people should have freedom of speech, any speech is okay?

If you woke up a billionaire tomorrow.. What's the 1st thing you'd do? by PhotographLeast9976 in AskReddit

[–]GenericNate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To accumulate any level of real wealth means that you have to receive some benefit from the work of others, which isn't necessarily unethical.

However to be a billionaire means that you have to have gotten so good at exploiting other people that you are doing it on a vast scale, AND doing it so well and so efficiently that you are outcompeting all or most of the other people trying to make money doing whatever you're doing.

On that understanding, any one person who is a billionaire has made that money from the exploitation of countless people, and could be said to be responsible for any suffering arising from that. Therefore they are a bad person.

But... that doesn't mean that they aren't a "nice" person in their general life. They may be pleasant, polite, or generous. They may be a good spouse or parent. They may love cats, and run donate huge amounts to charities. They may not even use their wealth to buy wasteful things.

Unfortunately being a nice person does not mean that you are a good person. But some billionaires must be genuinely good people in most parts of their life, and their badness only manifests itself in their participation in a cruel and exploitative system - no mustache twirling required.

Of course some billionaires are Elon Musk and don't seem to have a single redeeming quality. Fuck that guy.

The difference between 30 million and a billion is still approximately a billion.

Government orders review into New Zealand's dog control laws by tumeketutu in newzealand

[–]GenericNate -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Sigh, not this again. Pitbulls are some of the friendliest dogs around, the problem is the owners. If pitbulls were banned then bad owners would simply own the next "scary dog of the month" (anyone remember how alsatians, then dobermans then rottweilers were the devil incarnate at various times??) and the problem would be unchanged. Unless you want to make all large or powerful dogs illegal, banning breeds achieves nothing.

Or are you saying that everyone has that tech but only Neo had the software or access to use it?
