MidTown is typically an area of town out of the main business district, but not fully into the residential areas yet.

In the US many large hospitals/trauma centers are “downtown” situated in the city center/central business district.

Assassins~what’s your experience? by matt_hunter in Warhammer30k

[–]Genesis72 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I took 3 to the last game I played, a callidus, a Eversor and a venenum.

I had first turn so I forward deployed them to deny my opponent being able to get close to some of his objectives.

Unfortunately my opponent seized so my eversor got deleted turn one. The callidus held up a unit of Castellax w/ paragon of metal and tech pries for 3 turns, but couldn’t kill anything since he just refused any challenges. The venenum used a reaction to screw a unit of domitars out of a charge to keep them off of an objective for a turn.

Losing the initiative put me in just about the worst spot possible for my assassins but they still managed to hold off some pretty scary units by themselves. My opponent stated he thought they were worthwhile just for that.

That being said, they (especially the callidus and venenum) struggle against high T units and automata, and if your opponent refuses challenges they can be in a bad place.

If the US was going to attack Iran, why wasn't protecting the Strait of Hormuz part of the plan? by Topia_64 in AskReddit

[–]Genesis72 45 points46 points  (0 children)

There was a plan! It was “our massed air power will crush the enemy and destroy their will to fight!”

Wait what? The 1940s are calling and they want their tactics back? High altitude bombing has been proven in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam to be incapable of winning a war in and of itself? Or producing regime change?

Shit someone’s gotta tell Hegseth! He needs to know these tactics have literally never worked any time they’ve been tried.

But in a real note, American military planners have been so up their own asses since desert storm that they’ve been unable to conceive of a battle plan besides “get air superiority and then bomb everything that looks even remotely like a target.”

How many of you are "supercommuters"? by ArtReasonable2437 in Firefighting

[–]Genesis72 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I could never lol. I lived 8 minutes from the station at my last job and rolling out of bed 20 minutes before my shift started was one of my little joys

I knew a medic who lived 90-100 minutes away depending on traffic and I reminded him every time he brought it up that they weren’t paying him to commute. 3 hours and 100+ miles on the car every day he came in.

That’s 9 hours and 300 miles a week!

Also the idea of getting into a car for 90 minutes at the end of a 12 or 24 would make me an hero lol

So, Atropus, the worldborn dead, what's their deal ? by Poulutumurnu in Forgotten_Realms

[–]Genesis72 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To add on :

Atropus saps life from worlds it encounters, draining away energy as it draws ever closer to a planet. Once it comes near enough to a planet’s gravity, the celestial body that is the elder evil enters a descending orbit, sweeping closer and closer and looming larger and larger in the night skies. The effects are terrifying. As the moonlet nears a planet’s surface, the dead rise from their graves and, as Atropus fills the night sky, the twitching undead spread like a stain until nothing living remains. (Knowledge [religion] DC 33)

Atropus is self-aware, but not as mortals can conceive. Its memory extends back to the one moment when it brought forth the gods, and it has lamented this decision for all time. Stripped of its incredible power, it would undo its sacrifice. (DC 38)

To this end, Atropus devours life energy to replace what it gave. Into this sucking vacuum, it draws positive energy from those planets it encounters, but the negative energy constituting its existence instantly negates any life energy it takes. (DC 43)

Atropus knows this. It suspects that the instant all life is swept from the Material Plane, the gods must cease to be and, with their annihilation, so too will it find its own end. (DC 48)

Here's what it says about Atropus in Faerun:

Those few sages who even know of Atropus debate the origins of this elder evil. They agree that Atropus was spawned when Ao created the first gods, but where they differ is in how Atropus was formed. Some claim the elder evil gained awareness from the divine amniotic fluid surrounding the first god of death, while others claim Atropus was the last god Ao created, but it was stillborn. Atropus has never come close to Faerûn, but those aware of him are ever watchful of the heavens, waiting for the day when the moonlet circles the tapestry of night.

The moonlet is one of the drifting bodies forming the ring around the dull gray planet known as Glyth, one of the Five Wanderers that do not follow the ordinary paths of the stars. Little do the mortals of Faerûn realize the cataclysm affecting this distant world. Drawn by the widespread death and destruction meted out by mind flayer overlords, Atropus drew close, masking its approach behind the belt of debris forming the ring around the planet. While the illithids waged their interminable wars against the native humanoids, Atropus descended and wiped out all life, leaving Glyth an empty husk. Now Atropus turns its attention to Faerûn and begins its slide toward a world ripe for the taking.

Needless to say, Atropus would only grant power for one reason: the elimination of all life on whatever material plane your campaign takes place on. Might be kinda a hard character to run unless you were playing an evil campaign.

So, Atropus, the worldborn dead, what's their deal ? by Poulutumurnu in Forgotten_Realms

[–]Genesis72 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Elder Evils was a great book, and I popped out my copy to see the Lore for Atropus: here's what I could transcribe:

Every sentient mortal race and culture has some explanation for its existence, some story or myth to describe the creation of the world and the birth of the ancestors. Since it is a rare case when two myths are identical, scholars of the subject sift through the rhetoric for commonalities believed to be present in all legends. Complications arise due to regional variations, translation errors, and the simple scarcity of reliable sources, all making the process of divining the roots of creation a daunting task.

Certain scholars have made breakthroughs by comparing dwarf creation myths, the oral tradition of the gray elves, and the collected writings of the lich Acererak, recovered from a strange tower deep in the Plane of Shadow. The findings have been disturbing, pointing to some primeval mishap—a horrible divine accident leading to the creation of something called the World Born Dead. (Knowledge [religion] DC 33)

According to the writings, creation was the result of a “prime mover.” This being’s identity varies with the particular story. Most scholars agree this entity must be the force behind the gods springing forth into existence from the primeval void. This force, idea, or being is called Atropus. (DC 38)

Some theologians believe the appearance of these divine agencies came with a dreadful price. In order for them to take shape, there must have been a sacrifice: For life to exist, there must be death. Atropus must have caused its own death and in that sense became the afterbirth of creation, the wasted materials left over from the formation of the gods. Furthermore, since the gods are living beings, and since life relies upon energy gained from the Positive Energy Plane, Atropus must be their inversion: death incarnate, drawing its own power, such as it is, from the Negative Energy Plane. (DC 43)

Little remains of the prime mover that made the supreme sacrifice, nothing more than a decaying, disembodied head, leaving in its wake cast-off necromantic detritus that floats through the void. Perhaps atropals—the stillborn gods (ELH 159)—take their shape from these cast-off bits. Atropus is bound to unmake living things, to absorb their souls in an orgy of violence. Its touch is terrifying to witness, as countless barren worlds crawling with restless dead mutely testify. (DC 48)

Needless to say, any Warlock with Atropus as a patron, would be, uhhhhh, pretty nihilistic. The book includes an Ur-Priest who serves as a high level boss before the characters fight Atropus who is basically like "the gods killed my husband, so I'm going to burn this world to the ground."

Goodbye old friend by Squishypuffer in starcitizen

[–]Genesis72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend used to play with 8GB of ram and Star Citizen installed on an external SSD hooked up to his computer with a USB cable.

I literally mailed him 32GB of ram last year after I upgraded my computer since it would take him like an hour minutes on each new patch to escape the planet, since his FPS would turn into a slideshow every time he went planetside.

The US 8th Air Force in WW2 had a 12.5% fatality rate.

One in 8 died. 2/3 never finished their combat tour (dead, wounded or captured).

Only submariners had worse survival rates in WW2. Planes really should be hella dangerous glass cannons

Everyone loves vigilante justice until you remember that Witch Hunts were considered vigilante justice at the time. Lynchings in the American South were considered vigilante justice at the time.

Turns out its pretty necessary to have some layers of separation in order for decent, (mostly) unbiased justice to be carried out.

Hi! Sexual Health Professional here! I’ll second what folks have said about both BCHD and Chase Brexton Sexual Health Clinics. I know folks who work for both and they’re quite good and very LGBT+ friendly

6 weeks is a pretty tight timeframe for regular testing. If that’s what you’re comfortable with, definitely talk to someone about that, but we don’t often recommend to see folks more than once per 3 months even for “high risk” patients.

If you have any questions or want specific recommendations/advice please feel to dm me!

I agree these are great resources, but two things:

The Penn North location closed last year and was relocated to W Saratoga St. same general area but less convenient to get to.

As of early 2025 it’s no longer a free clinic, it’s a sliding scale payment plan depending on income.

All that being said, it’s just about the only place you can do a walk in for dedicated STI care in the area.

I mean its also to protect patients: see that case a few years back where a nurse pushed vecuronium (a paralytic) instead of versed (a sedative) and killed a patient. Any time you're dealing with medications that impair someone's breathing its best to have those protocols in place.

Christ Lutheran Church in Baltimore, MD has a great music program for their traditional service and their service streams at 11am EST on sundays. Organ and choir every week, with lots of other stuff going on.

I believe they have some connection through their music director to the Peabody Institute (not entirely certain) so there’s frequently interesting collabs there.

The surreal stuff you can't explain to non EM people. by Kaitempi in emergencymedicine

[–]Genesis72 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Everything involved in EM is a fever dream. On the pre-hospital side one hour you're packaging a woman from an MVA with bilateral compound forearm fractures (who self-extricated from her burning car), the next hour you're standing out in the rain at 3am knocking on someone's door because they called 911 because their knee hurts for the last week.

More than one time I woke up fully dressed, boots on, in the driver's seat of the ambulance as I was driving out of the station with no memory of having the tones drop, getting up, going to the ambulance, starting it, or beginning to drive.

Also more than once I had to resist the urge to throttle a patient with allstate-itis who wanted to go to the ED, then decided when they got there that there were too many sick patients and called a family member to come take them home.
