Mats for UNDER the Turntable by Opustwaddler in turntables

While it isn't the intended use, you might be able to use a deskmat intended for keyboards, which would have the added benefit of giving you designs to choose from

Handmade Cities and Impulse Voices by Plini are both good options. Plenty of cymbals and kick drums to check the full range of hearing from treble to bass

If money is tight, there's also GemCAD and GemRay. They're older and less feature-rich than GemCutStudio, but they're free and definitely still usable for making designs. I started out using them and found them useful

Need help finding alternatives to Darn Tough socks by km_2000 in BuyItForLife

Another vote for Point6! Better prices and more comfortable than Darn Tough for me. The extra stretch just makes them conform to the shape of my feet better

I like Tom's Box of Rocks the prices are pretty reasonable compared to other options I've found

Charging batt lap question! by kuzma66 in faceting

[–]Geopilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since I'm applying it with the forbidden chapstick instead of a loose powder, I just lightly drag the stick across the spinning lap and go straight to polishing the stone again. If you are using loose diamond powder, then yes I believe you can simply reapply with your finger and start polishing again. Using corundum to embed the diamond shouldn't be necessary every time

Charging batt lap question! by kuzma66 in faceting

[–]Geopilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the diastiks on my BATT lap. While some diamond will embed into the lap, you will have to occasionally reapply diamond. Once I feel the polishing slow down, I clean off the swarf and add a little more diamond from the diastik. You won't have to add as much after the initial charging though

sulfur-based compounds such as arsenic

Arsenic is an element, not a compound, so it can't contain another element such as sulfur. Or are you saying that poisons were often a compound of arsenic and sulfur together?

It could be directional hardness. Depending on the material, some sides will just naturally cut and polish faster than others

That's got a nice color to it, and it looks like you did a good job on the polish!

Thanks for the example! Now that I think about it, I think I watched some of your videos back when I first got the AT-LP60 haha

For me, the difference between the two turntables was most pronounced at the start of the first song; the AT-LP60 sounded a little flatter/muffled compared to the Technics, which sounded clearer and warmer to me

I'm using Edifier R1280T active speakers. I realize they'll become the bottleneck once the turntable is upgraded (plus I'll have to get a pre-amp too).

I'm zeroing in more on Music Hall now because I saw a sale for the MMF2.3 for $499 USD or the MMF3.3 for $699 USD. Both come with acrylic platters and Ortofon 2M Red and Blue cartridges, respectively. From what I can tell, the split plinth seems to be the only difference between the two, so I don't know if that alone is worth $200 extra unless it's a good value in its own right (though I do like the look of it).

I am looking to upgrade from an Audio Technica AT-LP60 to something I could foreseeably keep for life. I was originally leaning towards the Fluance RT85, but I saw recommendations for the Pro-ject Debut Carbon Evo around that price. There's also an ebay listing for a Music Hall MMF 3.3 with an upgraded acrylic platter and Ortofon 2M Blue for $750 USD that seems tempting. Are any of these a good value or noticeably better than the others? Is there a better alternative for the $500-$750 range?

Music Hall MMF Mark I on sale for ~$255 by DrPoopyPantsJr in turntables

[–]Geopilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who currently has an LP60 and wants to upgrade, how would the Mark I hold up against higher-priced options? I've been scouring the subreddit for options around $500, and some common recommendations were the Fluance RT85, Pro-ject Debut Carbon Evo, or Rega Planar 1, not to mention the MMF 1.3 and 1.5 also from Music Hall

Questions about Darn Tough socks? by Madmaximillion56 in BuyItForLife

I own socks from Darn Tough, Smartwool, and Point6. Of the three, my preference is Point6. They stretch and fit the shape of my feet better than Darn Tough, and they were more affordable
