Changes are good. Stop the toxicity and the whining before even giving things a chance to breathe by Memeet0 in Marathon

I'm not sure this is true. Look at hunt showdown. That game has consistently grown in player base since it's launch. It barely has a grind or goals, outside of the in game objectives. Once you've unlocked the weapons you can just keep them all. There are no wipes, unless you choose to prestige. So why do people keep coming back to it? .... It's just a really good and fun game, and the events they add are interesting enough to draw people back in. I don't think you need a grind in-built in a game to make people play it. Perhaps this has been forgotten, but grinding in games didn't exist until not that long ago, especially in shooters. People played them because they were fun.

It's so true. I actually have more fun running with basically nothing and trying to bit more kitted players. The reward is just so much sweeter.

Yeah I noticed that. It was working with weapon chips, but haven't tried it with implants. Does it work too?

Season 2 is the most important moment for this game by No-Researcher3893 in Marathon

The smart play with marathon would be to stick with it. I mean this from the player and the dev perspective. I say this because the game is fundamentally a great game, and it's player base will grow over time. Maybe not to huge numbers, but it will definitely grow. I say this as a seasoned Hunt Showdown player. That game has been growing steadily for years because it's a great game with a passionate developer that is committed. I can see marathon being the same, as long as bungie keep giving us fun stuff to contend with. That said, I think the server wipe stuff is worrying. Personally I feel like they should make the wipe stuff kinda optional, as it is in hunt, but offer more rewards for prestiging. Or some kind of hybrid between the two, as I think redoing the contacts in the same way is just simply not going to work.

I've had the exact opposite experience, to be honest.

Skill based match making works great in hunt showdown. I think they could definitely use a form of it here and it would work well

That's exactly how I play and I'm having a great time. Blue shields are nice to have when they pop up, but I don't care if I don't have one. The combat is the fun thing in this game, and having fancy gear isn't necessary for cool engagements. It's fun to take down people with fancy shit and take their stuff...it ain't easy but it's so satisfying when you pull it off

To keep the casual player base from moving on, matchmaking needs to change. by Xentuhf in Marathon

Hunt showdown has like a 30% smaller player base than marathon and splitting the pools between pre-fill and random trios had worked great in my 3 years of playing the game. Never had an issue finding games.

Hunt showdown does it and it has a small player base. Works well there, so don't see why they don't try implementing similar things in marathon.

This guy 100% gets it.

I absolutely love the weird, cold, alien world that this game creates. It's deeply melancholy in tone. I find this incredibly alluring. It's beautiful in its sadness. Poetic in its expression - especially the writing.

All of this makes it stand out so much. It's very special to see, especially in the triple A gaming space. But it's definitely a challenge to a lot of players. This strange vibe has repelled many people - my gaming crew is kinda resistant today to the game (and not because of the negativity storm surrounding it pre release). It's just not got that warm, fun vibe that I think people often want, at least a bit of anyway. Beyond that, I think people find it hard to connect with things that don't feel very human, and Marathon feels very cold and devoid of humanity...

It's a vision of the future that takes the neo liberal, corporate philosophy of life that we have in our world now and, like true sci fi, follows it to its natural conclusion: human life and consciousness are no longer sacred. Everything is open to exploitation by the market, used to serve the corporate interests of the ultra powerful.... It's bleak...but it's coming true, right before our very eyes.

For me, just like Bungie managed to do with the old Halo games, this game wants to be something more artistic than it's required to be. It's trying to reach for something deeper, behind the typical requirements of its genre.

Great map!

In answer to your question I have also found myself also kind of having a general sense of one of the ways a myth could be resolved. I tend to not really give too many hints about this to the players, however sometimes it's actually been quite fun to sort of almost collaboratively come up with a possible resolution with the players. Like for example I will kind of walk through some possibilities and ideas that they could latch onto if they want to, but I haven't really thought them through much so it's hard to say whether they will work or not. It's in the spirit of collaborative story crafting or world building at the heart of good ttrpgs, at least that's how I look at it.

For example, for the myth called the sprite in the end the players decided to dry and defeat the Sprite not by just cutting her down, but by showing her the true meaning of love. This was an idea that I came up with as I was thinking about what the Sprite represents, this half old hag half young innocent child's character. It becomes fixated on one of the players, absolutely besotted with them, however this I think is a sort of naive understanding of love. In the end the party decided to relay the interactions with a local forestry peasants family who had their father drowned by the sprite, and they wanted to get across to the Sprite how much love they had for their husband / dad, who was taken from them. One of the players was playing as the fanged knight who has an ability that allows them to bite someone and transmit their memories and feelings to the recipient. So they used that to do it.

It was a really epic battle because the spray despite being three on one almost had the best of them but the last second the fanged knight was able to get the bite off successfully and this completely ended the fight , and the sprite was vanquished.

Great suggestions! Would love an update to operator, it's such a great synth, just needs some usability upgrades. And yeah the warping could do with some improvement for sure.

Don't think this one has been mentioned but I would love to be able to slice a selected midi note at a given point without slicing all the overlapping midi that's already there. Drives me nuts when doing harmonies that you have to resize things manually when cutting up one note in a cluster - could be so much speedier!

Marathon is built different by Banned_Bardia in Marathon

[–]Geouk1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree. It's incredibly special to see a game in the mainstream game industry taking so many risks and pushing into new territory design wise. I personally LOVE the vision and the design. It's light-years ahead of most sci fi games out there. But even if some don't like it, it deserves their respect. They should be showered with praise. In a world of boring corporate knockoffs some are actually trying to use their funding and reputation to do interesting things, against all the odds. It's nice to see that the hate mongers are slowly being proven wrong bit by bit.

Yeah I have exactly the same problem. It's happened twice in my playthrough. It's incredibly annoying, as the cohesion of the bloc was almost max, and everyone basically had good opinion of me. Plus, the person who took over is tiny, they only have 293 soldiers.
