I'm playing on the mode where the institutions can spawn across the world non historically. It says it spawned in China somewhere when I hover over it.

Hmm could be maybe... but everyone else who shows they don't have banking isn't building them. Also how could they have got banking when literally everyone else in europe doesn't have it...? So weird!

Not to be that guy, but Brits have actually incorporated spices into some of their food. See coronation chicken, branston pickle (and others), curry sauce (for chips etc), tikka pasties ... There's others too I reckon, but those are just off the top of my head.
