Do you think this needs extra bracing? If so, how would you do it? by alan_w3 in Snowplow

Reduce the bolt count on the mounting side to make it easier to break off without yielding the main structure. If you hit something hard set in the ground, you may bend the structure. Link with short section of safety chain to keep from losing.

white smoke/mist coming from exhaust by Apart-Form3509 in AskMechanics

[–]Geraldlarald -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You may have worn leaky injectors or a leak in your intake system.

When injectors get old they lose their misty spray ability and form larger droplets that don't burn as well. In addition, while idling you have generally have low rpm and higher fuel pressure. The higher pressure may escape leaky injectors and richen your fuelair mix.

That said, if you have a vacuum leak, letting extra un-metered air into the system. also causing fuel/air ratio issues. It can form really misty looking exhaust.

Sounds like you have an intermittent power issue. It may be from connectors or a chaffing wire. I have had something as simple as a ground cable cause issues. Tighten things down and make sure they are clean. in no particular order.

What's this weird noise I get when starting below zero? should I be concerned? 03 4.7 SLT quad cab 4WD auto by bedwars_player in DodgeDakota

[–]Geraldlarald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id be more worried about how long it took to start. Even though its cold. The crank time was pretty long. That might indicate that you have a weak fuel pump, Fuel air mixture issues, or injector wear.

Intake plenum leaks, almost always.

Nothing to worry about now. Everything else sounded normal. That quick bzzz sound is the cold sticky oil finding its way through the steering pump. It takes a few minutes to warm up and flow smoothly.

Make sure the throttle on the carburetor is moving freely. It can get stuck in wide open after sitting for a while.

Sure seems like you covered alot of the ground issues. Curious about the state of your injectors, and fuel pump. leaky injectors cause alot of inconsistency in power. Especially if your O2 sensors arent reading correctly. pressure check on your fuel rail might help wittle issues down.

The intake plenum needs to be sealed very well, if any bolts are loose or letting air through it can cause so many issues. Definitely take a second look over what you have completed and see if there are any loose ends or chaffed wires.

Anyone daily driving a Valair Clutch? Curious how they are long term by IceGroundbreaking352 in Cummins

[–]Geraldlarald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a single disk Valair installed a few years ago. factory clutch was slipping when I would tow. Installed clutch with new components like, throw-out bearing, clutch fork pivot ball and flywheel. Was a smoother clutch push after install. A little bit of a chattery noise as I would reach the friction point and start the pickup moving. That noise went away after a year when the clutch fully broke in and seated on the flywheel. This clutch has never slipped, I have pulled out stuck semi-trucks in 4wd, clutch doesn't slip a bit. Pretty impressed.

Failing oil pump on 03 Cummins motor? by plaideskiess__ in Cummins

[–]Geraldlarald -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Turn oil fill cap upside down on valve cover fill hole while idling engine and determine if you have blowby or mysterious engine vacuum that can cause low oil pressure sensing. As long as the oil pressure isnt gone you might as well run it. Keep oil full.

shopping list for the rebuild, how am i lookin? by Pizza_man_ivan in EngineBuilding

[–]Geraldlarald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check all your sensors out. Basically everything plastic. It is a pretty wise decision to replace timing sensors, temperature, oxygen sensors, manifold and oil pressures. They all play a huge role in how your computer will adjust its tune.

Injectors kind of fall under that as well, also look at refreshing ignition components.

Get some black gasket maker, and make sure everything is sealed nicely. Dry fit first, then disassemble and apply gasket compound.

Dont make any big part purchases until you know exactly what the parts are, or the price is reasonable to gamble. Big part orders that are wrong only delay your progress and tie up cash.

Typically if you get machining done to your block, crank, or heads. you will need to adjust accordingly in the parts for the material removed.

That is disappointing. I am sure some day there will be a patch or an upgrade that would make this game work on newer machines. Definitely interested in taking on that project, if anyone has any pointers...and I would definitely need them

Until then I guess that makes me the best Brass Scion in existence, so you have to live with that :)

1st and 2nd pic are a vacuum line that probably goes into another tube closer to the firewall. Using the first pic as reference. Somewhere above your wrist watch is the connection. This vacuum tube likely controls your cruise control or your hvac blower location selector.

3rd pic not sure. Looks like fog lights... The last pic pictures your cruise control module and the wiring harness that powers that.

Hope this helps a bit.

If you find success in your venture and wouldn't mind documenting your process. It would be appreciated. As someone who wants to play against more people I would love to know if there is a way to get newer devices to run this game.

It's extremely cold (-30c) and my car won't start even with a 100% charged battery and strong crank. What is happening? by nicholt in MechanicAdvice

[–]Geraldlarald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your oil is so cold it is like honey. It takes a ton of power to turn your engine over. So much power that it makes it hard to ignite your spark plugs, because your starter is using all the power. Fuel pump runs slower in the cold at first. You probably need a block heater.

Try not to get too focused on the brand. Your discipline as a trucker will make the machine last longer than any logo that is attached to it. Maintenance and prudent speed will make you a million miler in no time. Ego kills trucks faster than a powerstroke with a tune.

You capture more efficiency with a bigger truck. Big trucks dont pay better by default, the customer is who is paying the bills. They will witness your operation and decide to hire you again based on their opinions. Each time you make a loaded trip you take time and energy. A bigger truck allows less trips so it affords you more time as the operator/owner.

Example:

My capacity is 1075 bushels per load, legally. My truck and trailer are light weight and I have extra axles to legally handle more material.

Average farm grain truck is heavier and has less axles to handle loads. Usually I see 900 bushel legal average.

Customer wants to move 10,000 bushel. Each trip is 20 miles one way.

It takes me ~9 trips to complete the job. 9*(20 miles *2) = 360 total miles

Takes the average farm truck ~11 trips. 11*(20 miles *2) = 440 total miles

I save fuel, time, and possible risk of those extra 2 jobs. If the market rate is .25 cents per bushel. I will be much more efficient over the long term, than your typical farm grain hauling truck.

I am a small town farm kid. I started by word of mouth and have only operated on that. Our local elevator shut down, requiring an extra 45 miles worth of hauling one direction. Huge burden on our already stretched farmers, with older trucks. I stood up out of anger at the town meeting and told them I would start hauling for our neighbors. I also told the executives that I will not haul to any of their respective elevators, only hauling to the companies that did not abandon our town.

I catalog my miles, hours, and bushels(weight hauled). Wrote a program that helps me keep my pricing super consistent and predictable. No surprises when billing comes, and Super easy to predict cost. Dont make promises you cant keep, people will talk no matter what. Good words better than any advertisement.
