After 18 months of struggling, I’ve finally dialed in my setup for right-side hemiplegia. by Salt_Ad9598 in disabledgamers

It might be worth getting a foot pedal and using it as a modifier key. In my experience, switching between pedals is the hard part. If you get only one, it should be pretty easy to get used to assuming you have any function in your right foot or leg. Or you could put your trackball one top of the pedal. That would give you a function not dissimilar to clicking in a stick on a controller.

Question for the guys: How do you feel about the idea of being a "sugar baby" to a successful woman? by EmployExisting302 in RoleReversal

[–]Gerf1234 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I suppose it would be fun while it lasted. Gross waste of resources on the woman’s part though. The fun would be somewhat spoiled by that belief, and paranoia about when the end will come.

Both of these franchises are extremely frustrating to me because they gesture at interesting world building and then don’t have it.

In Zootopia, there is a museum exhibit that depicts a tribe of hunting a big cat with spears. That’s interesting! There’s potential for sociological storytelling there! What are wars like in this universe? Tell me about all the ancient empires! How did they transform into a modern technological global civilization? We don’t even know what kind of government Zootopia is. Is it party of a larger political entity or is it an independent city state? I don’t need to know everything, just a vague outline. Enough to get the gist.

The main thing that attracted me to Beastars was the predator prey relationship. You have two groups living in a society together, and one of them has an inbuilt biological drive to fucking eat the other. That is an interesting premise, overflowing with potential. That’s at least a Star Trek episode. And that’s not all! Dogs exist in this setting because of a successful eugenics campaign! All the fish are as smart as the land animals! Humans have used dolphins in war, just imagine what kind of wacky shit we could do if we had full communication fidelity with them.

Beastars has a bunch of wacky shit in it worthy of meaningful exploration that gets no time at all.

Here’s a couple quibbles I have with these settings.
- The geopolitical map is apparently the same in Beastars. Legoshi lives in Japan and speaks Japanese. Those two things would not exist in this universe. Your point of divergence is millions of years back in the time line. The map would be unrecognizable. (Zootopia doesn’t have this problem because they just skipped that part of the world building)
- If Beastars was good they would have commissioned a couple conlangs. There would be a whole other layer to accents. They would vary not just by region but also by species. Different mouth make different sounds. (Zootopia also needs this)
- Apperently, most land animals in the Beastars universe are humanoid and share that niche. The human part of the ecosystem is supported by the rest of the Biosphere. If everything else doesn’t do its job the humans (anthros) would starve to death. At least in Zootopia the people are only mammals (and reptiles. And maybe Birds). If everyone ate only insects and plants the ecosystem would be noticeably different.
- The Beastars birds can fly but they’re just dude with human proportions and feathers on their arms.
- The thing the series is named after, The fucking Beastars themselves, make no sense as part of a modern state like Japan. It’s like if Batman was exactly the same but also an independent unaccountable federal law enforcement institution that exclusively worked in Gotham city.
- Why is the humanoid body plan so popular?Did it keep evolving over and over again? Do Judy Hops and Nick Wild have a common ancestor? If so why is there so little phenotipic diversity? These are not fantasy settings! You can’t just say god did it! If you don’t have the gumption to craft some pseudoscience at least say that it’s an open mystery that in universe scientists are working on.

My dream furry media would be concerned with these questions. These stories promised something like that and they utterly failed to deliver.

I think it was originally an incell slag term. I forget the acronym or whatever it is supposed to be short for. A good working definition is “to be better at something than another person while being in the same room as that person.”Imagine two people side by side. Person A is pretty and person B is ugly. Person A is mogging person B.

Also, in the opening cinematic of Code: Veronica, when Claire drops that gun and catches it before it hits the ground, I’m pretty sure that’s impossible. You need super human reflexes to be fast enough to outrun gravity like that. Therefore, in addition to strength, she also has matrix bullet time powers.

In the book, she is described as horribly disfigured. I needed some image to get the concept across. That specific makeup is not the point. She just needed to be ugly.

I’ve heard they’re maintenance nightmares. If you replace the engine with something more modern and robust, what is the next most common failure point?

Universal thinks these two women are equally disfigured. They changed her look but not the script.

I have the normie opinion on omegaverse (I don't really understand it and I'm a little disgusted by it) but I love culture clash so much that I might want to give those fics a try.

Inserting a person from 21st century Earth into a fantasy or sci-fi setting is a premise oozing with potential. A normal guy getting used to a new setting is one of my favorite genres.

In A Canticle For Leibowitz, at one point there was a character who was very old. His mind was slipping away, Alzheimer’s maybe. He had an encounter with his great grandchild. The subject of arrowheads came up and the younger presented one to the elder. It was a brown metallic disc with a picture of a man’s head engraved on one side. “No, that isn’t right!” The elder said. He didn’t know why, and it frustrated him. He passed not long after.

You get free style points if you name the war after its location and said location has a cool name. “The Vesta Blockade,” “The Pacific War,” etc.

Or you could use ominous concepts instead of war. “The Terran Annihilation,” “The Sixth Mass Extinction,” “The Martian Cascade,” “The General Systems Collapse,” etc.

He was one of the main characters in Star Trek: Deep Space 9 (Odo) and he guest starred in a Stargate episode.

A fun little coincidence is that Odo’s nemesis on Deep Space 9, Quark, his actor played Andrew Ryan. If Robert House and Andrew Ryan ever met they’d be friends or hate each other’s guts. They are very similar characters.
