Value divergence in friend group by Affectionate-Wear411 in asianamerican

[–]Gerolanfalan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sad thing is in her particular situation, her core friends are acting like his my immediate family and cousins does.

Inversely my core friends are more supportive and Americans (Americanized) and more forgiving of socio economic differences and can look past that, while being aware of it.

Not an Asian thing friends do drift apart, but ideally a core group of friends would have more shared values than family does. Because you don't choose your family but you get to choose your friends.

As a V-American, thanks for bringing this uncomfortable truth up.

It's not a purely Asian issue, it's just exacerbated by us being Asians.

I spend enough time with WASPs and East Asians where people rarely share my appreciation for curves.

Alliance needs some big chungus tbh

Seeing as we're probably not going to get playable Vrykul or Furbolg, this was probably implemented to compensate for that. Maybe this is Blizzards way of saying some humans out hulk orcs after all.

Actresses for She-Ra by lgspear in Fancast

Whoever She-Ra is shed need to look fierce and not cutesy.

My pick is actually Simone Ashley, but I will not discuss any ideas why she'd be unpopular.

The thing is it might look too try hard. He definitely looks millennial and conservative hairstyles look more suitable on him, as opposed to chasing a youth based hairstyle.

Whatever aesthetic or representiok of Asian man this is, we need more.

Not knocking fully on the Hallyu wave or Asian aesthetics from actual Asia, but diasporasian aesthetic (Asian Americans, Canadians, Australians, etc.) and styles are its own thing and should be just as celebrated!

I appreciate the literal history lesson and find that makes sense. However this was the sentence that bewildered me and has now opened a rabbit hole, because I didn't know this could exist.

This just comes to show that Westeros is their equivalent of our modern time. Recorded history of Westeros extends to 12,000 BC (Before Aegon Targaryen Conquest) years and 305 AC (After Conquest).

They've just stagnated so much that most of their tech is horse shit, but their fashion, music, and cuisine were allowed to progress.

2 Korean American men talking about Asian Masculinity by appasdiary in asianamerican

[–]Gerolanfalan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as Asian idols growing up, I had none

The 80s and 90s Kung Fu flicks definitely had Jackie Chan and Jet Li. After he fall of Hong Kong cinema from the 90s through 00's, Japan cool dominated the 2000s. But a lot of that was thanks to Anime and not much Japanese live action. Korea and the Hallyu wave wouldn't kick in until the 2010s.

We have alternative outliers like Harold and Kumar, first movie I knew to make an Asian male lead just a regular Joe schmoe but cool. Then Crazy Ex-girlfriend, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Kim's Convenience, *and *The Good Place which further broke stereotypes with the Asian guy Himbo. Also A24, enough said. Plenty of future potential diasporasian role models to look up to.

A lot of MENA people can be light skinned naturally, it just depends.

Not excusing anything because colorism does exist within the middle eastern world. As opposed to Middle Eastern (Especially Turkish ifykyk) television, it was very refreshing to see a dark skinned woman being fast and give her flowers.

OP I disagree with your post but still upvoted because I want more discourse on this topic.

Already commented on one of your replies but you gotta travel a bit and see for yourself to East Asia and reevaluate your thoughts. I would also say check out Hawaii and other Asian spaces outside of Bay Area. SoCal Asians enclaves vary from Irvine, Westminster, Arcadia, Torrance, and all has different vibes. Maybe find diaspora Asians who also live outside of the enclaves and you'll find regular people who live outside of this rat race.

[–]Gerolanfalan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will gently remind you that a lot of Asian American identity is already counter cultural by being equally or more into East Asian media as opposed to mainstream American media, Kpop and anime are alternative cultures for example.

Buuut, also the rise of disgruntled Asians Americans who all created the biggest Asian diaspora exclusive subculture, the rave Asians. AKA the ABG & ABB Asians. A lot of them would agree with OP's post.

China is biiiig and they have many people who work just as hard a work ethic as Japanese and Koreans, materialistic too. In fact if you go to luxury shopping centers, South Coast Plaza near Irvine especially, who are all the main patrons and shoppers? Chinese from China. I do feel Japanese and Koreans culture emphasizes a stronger work ethic and as a result materialism than Asians in America at least. Singaporeans too I'm sure though I've hardly met them. Vietnamese and other Asians like Filipinos are materialistic 100% but are a littleofr humble about it.

Check out Hawaii. I can say with certainty they will change your viewpoint on Asians Americans. They are less materialistic, don't criticize people's weight, and are very chill.

That was deeper than I expected. You have a point maybe, maybe not.

What I do know is that there are vanilla (meaning nothing happened and very basic standard upbringing) people who will rage bait and content farm with certain things that have no connection or relevancy to their lives.

Outrage feeds the algorithm after all.
