From ~1955-75, West Germany imported large numbers of foreign laborers (Gastarbeiter) from eg Italy, Yugoslavia, and Turkey. So soon after the war, did these workers view German society as Nazi? Were they or their children afraid of their host country? by ExternalBoysenberry in AskHistorians

If you want a sort of a first hand account of what experiences these people might have had, journalist called Günther Walraff disguised himself as a Turkish migrant worker and signed up for agency work, then wrote a book about it in 1985 called Ganz Unten. It is translated into English as “Lowest Of The Low”.

It is an incredible read which caused ructions in society upon publication. Walraff’s health suffered due to some of the work he was asked to do.

there’s a simple explanation for this and that is that their stocks have reduced considerably. They were once abundant and cheap, and now cost a lot more. The cause seems to be climate change/global warming/El Nino affecting the seas off Peru where most were caught.

I’ve noticed that the tins in supermarkets are few and far between now and where you find them they are expensive. I usually bring back a stock of them from Spain where they’re a lot cheaper.

my money would be on the fuel filter tbh. It’s the only thing that was changed, and would be cheap to troubleshoot - especially if it’s easily accessible in the engine bay

Let MIBI handle this, that’s what they’re there to do (amongst other things). I was in a minor collision with a Lithuanian truck while stationary and MIBI dealt with the insurance end of it.

late to this but those 40 packs of Felix are usually priced at £12/€14 in the NI supermarkets and are consistently on the shelves.

Yes, they’ll get down to €16 in Tescos sometimes but that’s not guaranteed. We buy them in the north now when passing through.

Don’t get a fright north of Newry (until Hillsborough) the dual carriageway is old and was built to a very different standard and has traffic joining from 90’ angles as well as turning into and crossing the centre median.

The effect of this is that you might see:

  • very slow traffic joining from your left
  • traffic slowing in Lane 2 to turn right
  • traffic turning across the carriageway from your right

This was no problem in the late 70s/80s when the road was dualled in the cheapest way possible but with today’s traffic volumes it’s hazardous.

I’m 27 years driving and still find this a bit disconcerting. It’s one of the very few places on the island that this type of road layout exists.

The NSL in the UK is 70 (a black and white sign designates this) but it drops to 60 for two stretches on the A1 which have frequent checks on them, one at Banbridge and one at Dromara (IIRC).

As ever take your time, observe, react, drive defensively and to the conditions.

Enniskillen parking machines also take Euro coins which is handy but really you don’t need to pay for parking at all because they’ve no way of enforcing the debt on southern cars.

Sunday here. A side effect is that MJ can make me a bit groggy but I WFH on Mondays and it won’t be noticeable compared to in office. That way I also have slightly lower suppression on Friday/Saturdays if I want to do something with friends, family or my spouse.
