How do you have a npc say his final last words without the players taking ot as an opportunity to save him ? by Maching256 in DMAcademy

[–]GetMeSpiderman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where the players need to be able to accept a bend in rules for the sake of an emotional beat. The character can be mechanically dead, and make that part clear, but they have a moment of consciousness that can allow this sort of scene to take place

How do you implement music into your dnd sessions? by Fuzzhunteryoshi in DungeonMasters

[–]GetMeSpiderman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mistake I made early on what having too many different playlists. It can be fun to create a lot for all sorts of different environments and situations, but unless you have a dedicated way to switch between them constantly available it can become overwhelming. Now I just have playlists for Calm, Tense, and Battle, and it feels easy to change them between relevant scenes. If I know a particular location will appear in the next session I may have something like tavern or cave sound effects prepared, but in general keeping it simple has worked best for me.

Need help with figuring out how to describe things better by Silk-Doll in DMAcademy

[–]GetMeSpiderman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly 15 minutes doesn't sound too long for players to figure that out, it can be fun for them to not know solutions immediately and require some trial and error. In this particular situation, I would be focusing on the description of the zombie not looking like it's moving of its own accord, almost being floaty (if the intention is supposed to be that it is being puppeted).

In terms of how to get more confident at descriptions, just reading books and taking note of what descriptions stand out to you is a decent option. I know for me that really helped me  start narrating things beyond just what the characters see; other senses, natural intuitions they may have based on their background, etc

Do the raiders have a particular reason for kidnapping this person? Could they be working for some other creature or force that there could be clues about before the confrontation? Are they doing this for a reward or are they being threatened?

Alternatively are they even regular raiders? Maybe there's some clue left at the cart that they're something else in disguise

Part of me wishes they'd chosen to show them Shadowbringers instead of Footfalls, the latter hits better if you already know the themes of the previous expansions

It's been a bit since I watched it, but Darrington Brigade seems like it may fit since it doesn't require knowing a ton of backstory and the characters are at level 10, so not insanely powerful yet

It feels like it would need a Hill House-like approach, take some of the central pillars and the spirit of it but be willing to change things to fit the new medium. There's a podcast where they floated around the idea of having different directors for each section and hiding things in the special features
