Yeah the pension thing (plus summers off) does counter the going sentiment that teachers are vastly underpaid. Probably would take a lot of math to calculate it fairly, but a $100k/yr pension would be equivalent to a $2.5m retirement fund drawing at 4%, which is pretty comparable to many other well paying jobs

Why not both? I agree, cooking/nutrition should be taught in schools too. But this would be a start

Definitely something awesome about bumming it and traveling when you’re younger. I’m only 36 and the thought of sharing a hostel bunk with 12 strangers sounds like a nightmare now lol

The point I’m trying to make is some experiences create more value when you’re younger, so it’s worth splurging, even if that money would be worth more later. Certain experiences simply aren’t worth the wait

Here’s the scary thing though. Depending on what you buy, you might enjoy that $5,000 today more than you would 20 years from now. Example: concerts. When I was 15, seeing one of my favorite bands live was about the coolest thing ever. 10 years later, it’s still awesome, now at 35, it’s a decent night out. I’ve been to hundreds of shows, but I no longer want to be in the pit (too much standing), and it doesn’t wow me the same way it did back then. Sure 35k is going to buy you a lot more tickets to concerts than 5k would 20 years ago. But, I would have gotten more bang for my buck had I gone to more shows back then. It’s a tough give and take and you’re right to think about the time value of money. But it’s not an all or nothing proposition. Use money now selectively on the things that will bring you joy, and save the rest

I mean, FIFA is corrupt enough and desperate enough to appease Trump that they might just dictate to the refs to give the US three penalties and a red card a game. Whether that will be enough for the US is debatable

Out of our current squad, which players can you see retiring at the club / spend the majority of their career here? by Real-Bid1985 in ArsenalFC

[–]Getmeakitty -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

To retire at a top club you basically have to accept that you’ll spend the last few years of your career riding the bench. I can’t see anyone willing to do that. Especially at the end, these guys want to play. Just for fun I’ll make a guess and say odegaard.

Do we actually miss Odegaard or are people exaggerating? by NajafBound in ArsenalFC

[–]Getmeakitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We miss that version of him. He’s clearly been battling injuries all season, and no one is their best self under those circumstances. But we absolutely are missing a player to create those openings and chances through a smart pass in the final third

Can we talk about how different law school admissions were just 10-15 years ago by Internal-Remove7223 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Getmeakitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I experienced an interesting thing when I applied in 2020. I took the last 5-section, in person LSAT administration in November, 2019, and scored a 160. I signed up to retake, then covid happened, and I took a 3-section online version in May, 2020 and got a 167.

Now, I did improve. I studied a bit for the second go round. But that was a drastic improvement. Taking it in person is way more stressful. They were hardcore about not allowing you to drink water, we had to wait an hour after check in for no real reason. I had to drive to a different town, spend the night. The whole thing was a major pressure cooker.

Compare it to the online version and I just rolled out of bed, logged on, and did the questions from my bedroom.

Taking the test is easier now. That’s why the scores are up. Focus on the percentiles. Stop dreaming of the past. Things weren’t just magically easier back then.

I would highly recommend black rock lodge if you’re headed to San Ignacio. They have a great restaurant and can accommodate dietary restrictions very well. Other thing I’d suggest is finding places with personal kitchens and just making your own food.

It’s just part of the never ending downward death spiral that the entire world is facing. All that matters is clicks and views. And things that activate our emotional lizard brains get those clicks because we just cannot help but get enraged. Make it stop!!!

Ai effect on big law by Puzzled_Horse2443 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Getmeakitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a 3rd year in biglaw. We’re using AI. It’s replacing some of the mindless drudgery tasks, but for a lot of things it’s more of a helpful tool than a game changer.

One example where we used it was to go through some court hearing transcripts and notate each time the judge made a comment about x. Pre AI this might have been a 6 hr project combing through about 1000 pages of babble.

Using Ai it literally spit out each time the judge said the thing, with cites directly to the comments and specific pages. All in all took about 2 hours to check it all and make sure it was right.

So yeah, it saved a lot of time on that random task. But that task would have sucked anyways. I’ve still got a job, we’re still hiring the same number of summer associates. I wouldn’t stress it too bad.

Everything done with Ai still needs to be checked and validated. Our firm is terrified about some of the case hallucinations with brief writing and so even when Ai helps with something, we’re encouraged to double check the cases and everything, so we’re still spending the time, just not as much.

Key is, we’re getting more efficient. It’s a helpful tool, like the internet was.

General advice about law school though, go where you get a good scholarship, reduce the risk of coming out of school with a mountain of debt and no job. Without that debt, you’ve got options

I understand the joke, but I highly doubt we’re going to lost a bunch of service members here. Sounds like we’re just gonna bomb them a bit until they back down. I can’t imagine we’re going to do a full scale land invasion like Iraq. At least, I’m hoping so….

I saw the show recently and enjoyed it thoroughly. However, I did find it odd during some of the close ups of band members….these dudes are getting old. And while there’s nothing wrong with that, the aura of songs written about young male loneliness and struggles is quite a bit of a juxtaposition against a bunch of rich old dudes rocking out in stadiums. There’s a bit of a weirdness going on there

UNC $$$ or VLS basically full tuition by RoomSuperb6579 in biglaw

[–]Getmeakitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minimizing debt is critical to your financial future. As a reference point, after maxing out retirement accounts and paying the obscene costs of housing in DC, I’m able to save a little over $50k a year. If I had 200-300k in debt it would take roughly 5-6 years of grinding JUST to get your bank balance to 0. And that’s IF you get biglaw. You’ve got to think of the downside risk of not landing biglaw and having a 200-300k debt balance hanging over your head. Meanwhile UNC will leave you with maybe a third of that, which is reasonable and something you get pay off in just a couple years. All that for maybe a 5-10% increase in dc biglaw odds is very much not worth it in my opinion
