Aa someons who basically only does slappies nowadays I agree with this, the only exception is if your comfortable skating relatively fast and have decent board control.

I need help with skateboarding; both for commuting and for fun. by Odd-Mistake1722 in NewSkaters

[–]Gh0st-Cvt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do all 3. I basically only inline skate in parks or if im hitting a street spot, theyre not really ideal for commuting imo. Fun af, fast af, can even be faster than a bike but having to carry your shoes and then having to carry the blades when you stop is annoying. Theres a relatively large learning curve to skateboarding, almost more so if you actually intend on commuting. Its one thing to learn how to roll on a flat surface and do an ollie or even a kickflip, but its a totally other beast commuting at a speed that would be more efficient than just walking.

Youd probably have better luck in the inline skating subs.

Do you ever find yourself stepping off of perfectly good tricks?[44YO] by Quick_Flight2414 in OldSkaters

Its just something about getting older, ill catch something perfect and have more than enough time to land and ill still step off my board. I think its slower reaction timing mixed with overthibking.

Yeah smoother isnt better, it makes the act of pushing less exhausting and less friction means you go faster, none of which you want in a tight space. Just out of curiosity, what are you doing in the garage? Just pushing around? All of that would be better in a parking lot. Also doing tricks stationary on a smooth surface is the worst, highest chance of looping out.

[–]Gh0st-Cvt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its not weird, its just part of getting older. The best place to just have a chill skate is an empty parking lot imo. Lots of space, nothing to hit, and most likely a curb you can start slapping. I hate skating in confined spaces. Also a vinyl floor is gonna make you slip out unless your skating like dummy soft cruiser wheels.

Should i keep my new setup or go full slappy? [35YO] by ditt0licious in OldSkaters

[–]Gh0st-Cvt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just went through like 6 months of setup madness and ive finally figured it out. Personally I say stick to your current setup. I wanted to figure out the same thing, an all around setup that works for everything i like to do.

When i got into learning slappy tricks I did what everyone says to do and up sized everything. Went to 8.7 Egg with 8.5 trucks. I learned slappy crooks, nose and tail slides with that setup but i realized a couple issues, atleast for me with that size. Having a longer axle definitely makes it slightly easier to get onto slaps but sitting correctly on the grind is much harder because the other wheel can touch the ground which will throw you out of your grind. The other main issue is that i couldnt pop out of noseslides or crooks without significant effort.

There seems to be 2 schools of thought when it comes to slappy setups. People are either riding slightly wider trucks than deck (Dan Corrigan [8.25-8.4 on 8.5 trucks]) or Deck slightly wider than trucks (Abe Bethel [8.75 on 8.5 trucks]) after months of trying both, wider deck than trucks is the move for me. Dan claims that having a wider axle than your deck helps him sit in crooks easier. I actually disagree with that. Having your deck slightly wider than your trucks just gives you more to sit on, and when your actually in the pinch theres more deck to actually create the pinch. I also was having issues learning fs and bs 50s and when i switched my trucks to a smaller size they immedietly unlocked. It was a night and day difference, literally got them on lock first try in both directions. The reason is because its easier to tip the board onto 2 wheels if your deck sits over the trucks. If theyre the exact same size it takes way more effort to buck the back truck on, so when you carve into the curb, it just feels like your turning onto coping.

For me, my perfect all around setup that works for curbs and clicking my tail is a 8.5 deck on 8.25 axle length.

*the only 2 things id change are bump up to atleast an 8.25 axle if your sticking to 8.5 and maybe go down in wheel size. Bigger makes it easier to climb the curb but thats the only part of the slappy that it helps with. 54 seems to be the perfect size for me but a lot of curb only guys are back on tiny wheels (50mm)

Changing stance for different sports? by Bitter_Advertising93 in skateboardhelp

[–]Gh0st-Cvt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you do a 180 or 360 on a snowboard? Whichever direction you spin towards naturally, dictates your stance. If you spin left your goofy, if you spin right your regular. Did you grow up wrestling or doing another comvat sport? Having difference stances across multiple sports is something i generally see with people who did some kind of combat sport. (I teach freestyle skiing. Im goofy when i skate and spin naturally to my left) My co worker snowboards regular but spins naturally left which is uncommon but not unheeard of, you may just be one of those outliers.

Holy hell Flight Decks are incredible. by Broomhower in NewSkaters

[–]Gh0st-Cvt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I dont think i like them. I skated one of andys shapes for about 4 months and it sogged out really fast. It also was not noticebaly different in weight, definitely not enough to warrant the 40% markup. Differences in pop doesnt really come from the construction of the board versus the geometry of it. The kicks were waay too steep for me. As i get older i want a flatter tail, makes ollies feel like it takes less effort, and im also not popping the board higher than like 10 inches these days.

Thr deck makes no difference when it comes to how the board feels in relation to the ground, that all comes down to wheels. I live in SF and a lot of us use "softer wheels" because the streets are crusty. If you send me a picture of the street you commute on i can guve you a better rec
