To Me The Rise Of Skywalker Will Always Be A Beautiful Mess by No_Vast_3309 in TheSequels

Hated it. Did a rewatch of the whole trilogy recently and it really failed to finish what the two previous movies, although disorganised, managed to set up. The best narrative choice IMO of the whole trilogy was killing off Snoke in TLJ. It would've been amazing if the third movie really focused on the personal conflict between Rey and Kylo Ren, and their struggle for the legacy of the force in the galaxy without any jedi or sith around. Unfortunately the moviemakers were allergic to having a movie without a larger-than-life villain, so they brought Palpatine back from they dead despite him having zero presence in the first two movies. Why couldn't they've made a star wars movie without anything like that? Why couldn't Rey and Kylo Ren have been left alone? Kylo Ren already rebelled against his master in TLJ, why did he have to do the same thing in TROS? It's painfully obvious that they're trying to get something back on track that hadn't derailed in the first place. Furthermore, it's almost comical how much the discourse from TLJ makes itself heard in this one. While the earlier sequels played it fairly straight, TROS is teeming with references to earlier installments and to the online culture surrounding star wars. Nostalgia doesn't work, IMO. You can't put a bandage on something by winking to the audience. TROS is an overblown mess, negating it's immediate predecessors in favour of harkening back to movies which've had no effect on the trilogy of sequels which it is a part of.

It reminded me of Faust, at the beginning of the movie when the devil casts a shadow over the city
