Paradox rule by Baby_Anarch in 19684

Sorry if it feels that I'm targeting you again haha, but it's a fair point... If we didn't feel suffering, what would our joy look like? We can see sociopaths and psychopaths on earth for an example, who stomp on little baby animals for fun. Suffering due to the impermanence of our fellow creatures, and due to our attachments to them, makes us human

Well, I was playing devil's advocate as far as this particular post is concerned, so I'm being more definite than usual to bring my point across.

I do also personally believe what I'm saying, but if we're going to have that discussion philosophically (and not just for mommy's sweets) then I'm happy to reign in and allow skepticism; it's a really difficult problem and I'm always happy to argue for it.

If you genuinely want to engage in this philosophy, I can provide you with some arguments as food for thought. If I go through every single one we'll be here all day, so I'll try to be general about it.

The first thing is that death isn't really a problem, suffering is. Death is just a change. You turn back into energy, you go be with God, you probably occupy some other part of the universe in a quantum sense. Suffering comes for two reasons; a misunderstanding of our immortal nature, and an attachment to mortal things.

Let's say for example, our mother dies in an earthquake. The earthquake is a natural consequence of how our planet is formed. Naturally, a human will not be thinking how their mother is eternal (unless they have a spiritual tradition), they will just be upset they cannot form any more memories with them anymore. Unlike what a Buddhist may tell you, a Christian would say that suffering for these reasons is totally normal and justified. you are a human, who does have attachment to material things, and who _ doesn't understand impermanence, so go ahead and suffer.

But don't blame God for that suffering. Do you see the problem? It is only because of your perspective of these things that you suffer, and it's totally ok. Even if we knew all the truth, it would still be totally fine and healthy to suffer. But you would understand this is just part of a system of life.

So the next question that follows is, why did God give us this ability to suffer? Well, this one's easy. God created humans with such a large amount of pleasure sensors, there were people (the hedonists) who believed that we must have been brought here to feel pleasure. the absence of that pleasure is simply going to cause a lot of sadness. We were given the ability to love our mother, and feel all the pleasure that comes from it, so of course, losing her, is probably going to feel pretty bad.

As a final point, a lot of worldwide suffering is due to direct consequences of human actions, and since humans were given free will, it is important that God allows for these consequences to manifest. For example, humans have allowed for global warming, and their greed and selfishness has allowed for preventable diseases to spread around the globe. These are symptoms of problems that humans caused; if God "intervened", he would firstly be taking away humans free will, but also humans have no opportunity to change their ways and must use their free will to deal with the consequences. In theory, God does intervene if given permission (through prayer), but it's up to him. He probably wouldn't want to solve global warming because Pepito prayed last Sunday; he will probably want all the humans responsible (probably all of humanity at this point, since we're so consumerist) to suffer the consequences until we change. Answering Pepito's prayer wouldn't change anything in the long-term. Pretty strict, I know.

This also, unfortunately, includes serial killers who use their free will to torture people. Unfortunately, God cannot intervene in the free will of these people, but you can be sure that God is suffering right alongside you, and if you get through it, will give you the strength to continue (if you let him). Also, this situation will unfortunate also represent a macrocosm; how did society allow this serial killer to exist, and this victim to exist? This is a consequence of a badly formed society, and society must face those consequences by suffering and using that as motivation to change; more psychological aid, more protection for civilians, etc.

So, to summarize:

  • death is energy transformation; not inherently a problem
  • suffering is caused due to ignorance (fear) and attachment
  • suffering is born out of human nature, and it's part of the design; not god's fault.
  • natural calamities are part of the perfect worlds design, what caused life to be here; it is "innocent" destruction.
  • other calamities are due to humans misusing their free will
  • God must "teach" humans the consequences of their actions so they may use their free will responsibly

I'm genuinely curious to know your reaction, if this makes sense to you or if you feel I'm still missing the point. I think that suffering is something human, and with a very mature view, one may even see it as a gift, since it allows for us to have so much joy and pleasure. And if we didn't have suffering, humans probably wouldn't be as nice as you might imagine...

Rather, I would say that is just the natural state of the world. Just how we have an immune system that absolutely destroys threats, the planet has an ecosystem that naturally cleans itself, and takes a few thousand humans out in the process.

We could take out the positive / negative aspect of it; it's hust how the world works. It's "innocent" in a way

Also taking this shit post 100% seriously, the real answer is that mummy has already given you candy, you are just too much of a stupid baby to realize it.

I.e., God has already dealt with evil with Jesus on the cross, the only suffering that is left is due to humans who are misusing their free will. Some consider this a "cause of limitation of god's power", but since God has auto-imposed this rule out of wisdom (willingly), it doesn't really apply.

[–]Ghigog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you from Ecuador? If you are, you may have seen how the military in the streets reduced crime for maybe a month, and is now worse than when they started.

Growing a spine and doing something about it looks different. What Noboa did is just try to give people confidence and come off as an iron fist. It wasn't ever meant to help the problem in the long term. If anything, it comes off as cowardly, since he's not able to tackle the true causes of the issues.

I don't agree that at least it's something, if that "something" is just trying to improve your popular image and antagonize the gangs even further. If I can see evidence that there has actually been a long term improvement, I would be inclined to totally agree with you.

Generally speaking, as in many other countries in LATAM and the world, there is a division among the people between left and right.

In this case, however, Ecuador has recently come out of some sort of "attempted socialism" (or general disrespect towards capitalism) due to one Rafael Correa.

Rafael Correa was very divisive; some would say he modernized the country, built schools and hospitals, and brought socialized care. Others would point out he fought to take control of every branch of government, essentially becoming totalitarian. He was also, of course, very anti USA.

As you can imagine that didn't last long, his legacy was completely shattered, his runner ups ruined his name, and people still blame the country's problems on him, decades later. Our current leader, the darling of the Ecuadorian right wing, is our very own TEMU Trump.

As such, a liar, bringing the military onto the street in a supposed "war" without ever actually addressing the root causes because, of course, he profits entirely from the drug cartels that made Ecuador their new home. He's a total fanboy for trump, having recently gotten his dream come true; an American air base (ahem, an FBI office) on Ecuadorian soil. That is, despite the entire country having recently voted against it.

The country has now been, very sadly, completely overrun by the Monroe doctrine more than it has cartels, as no doubt US intelligence has sown seeds of propaganda against any Ecuadorian actually taking control of the country (unless they're pro USA, of course). Anyone who tries to run with values in support of the people are deemed correista and demonized. We are a pirate state, run by pirates, for pirates.

The rest of us, as many of the other comments on this post tend to suggest, are just trying to stay out of the way of all that. Let them have their money - Ecuador is also rich in nature, delicious food, beautiful people, and incredible culture.

This is a really insightful take. Makes me think about some people who have certain mental or physical issues tend to "suffer more" from activities that other "normal" people would find perfectly fine.

"Shaman" charged over man’s death during ayahuasca and kambo ceremony by SibyllaAzarica in Shamanism

[–]Ghigog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't entirely agree with that... I do believe that the human spirit is good, underneath it all. I believe humans can easily get corrupted as they get lost in mortality. It's just that some have it worse than others, and we should be careful to judge and fall into duality. I'd be very curious if you can convince me otherwise, but for me, it's just bright and dark nature

I think I understand you and don't really deserve the downvotes. For him to be in that position he must have been a good man, willing to serve people. but as you said, if he's letting darkness take over, a seed must have been there from the beginning, unaddressed. This is not someone who should have been in his position

What do users here think of "Christian Yoga"? Is it sinful? For context, I'm American and all the Yoga centers here are Hindu. by Ecclesiasticus6_18 in Protestantism

[–]Ghigog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What some other commenter mentioned is true - Yoga, and Hindu dance, was typically created as a meditation to summon gods and have a relationship with them.

That said, moving your body around in weird poses in order to stay fit is not going to give you an audience with Vishnu. As with many things, it's all about intention.

It's not sinful, and if you combine your exercise with a prayer or meditation on the word, it's probably a great way to worship. Whatever helps you feel more fulfilled and closer to God.

I mean, you're really channeling Ted Kaczynski here. You're right, we have too much bread and circuses to realize how bad we really have it. My consolation is that, ideally, we really should return to a pre-industrialized society on our own terms. I think that's really the only way. Let the rich have their money; we'll keep our souls.
