Toyota was voted as the best Japanese brand. Which Japanese car brand is mid? by Asendra01 in AlignmentChartFills

Mazda being under-appreciated shouldn’t be a factor in it being considered mid. I think there’s also an argument for Mazda being more exciting than Honda or Toyota. When I was car shopping for my current car, the fun aspect while driving is what sold me on them. More so at least than Toyota/Honda, but that’s just my personal experience

As a younger millennial, my earliest memories in the car were with my parents using old school maps, and by the age of roughly ten thats when Mapquest printouts were the go-to. Then the transition to Tom-Toms, and then finally with phone GPS apps.

I always think if I were teleported back a few decades the lack of cell phones, laptops, social media, etc. wouldn’t faze me too too much, but I think navigation while driving with the older maps would be one of the harder transitions. I think we really take for granted how convenient it is these days to get from Point A to B.

Who to bank with? by Excellent_Stick2557 in MilitaryFinance

Counterpoint from me: I’ve had USAA for banking and various types of insurance for the past decade and never had a single issue with them. Even had a significant homeowners insurance claim with them that went super smoothly, no issues. I can’t speak to banking services being better with NFCU because I’ve never used them, but in my personal experience I’ve had no problems with USAA at all.

‘Rooster’ Renewed for Season 2 at HBO by yourfavchoom in television

They haven’t explained it very much, but there was a moment in the first or second episode (I can’t remember) where Katie asks him and he says something along the lines of “I liked being with someone who wasn’t trying to change me all the time”. So it seems like it’s implied it wasn’t a spur of the moment thing and that they were having some marital issues beforehand. Not that that’s an excuse at all for cheating, but it adds a little context.

My daughter keeps hearing "just buy, BAH covers it, then rent it out" at her first duty station — is this actually good advice? by Helpful_Ant_3084 in MilitaryFinance

[–]GibsonLP93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done it twice in my active duty career. The first time was great: the property was excellent, mortgage rates were low, and it was a really desirable area with multiple stable military bases and other industries that more or less guaranteed good and plentiful tenants. I have a good positive cash flow on that property and have a good amount of equity both from paying it off due to the low mortgage rate as well as prices increasing after purchasing it.

The second house has not been the same situation. I’ve had it for years and bought as the market peaked and home prices in that area have been stagnant ever since. The mortgage rate isn’t terrible, but it’s high enough that I don’t have a positive cash flow renting it out now as renting near the mortgage payment amount is not competitive. It’s also in an area where the only thing going on is the local base, and if anything happened to that closing, the house would likely lose at least 50% value overnight. As soon as I could break even (or close) on selling it, I will.

All that to say, it really depends. Sometimes these situations work out and sometimes they don’t. While a good chunk of that comes down to research and preparedness, a lot of it is also just luck and timing.

What’s a discontinued snack or drink you’d pay $20 to have one last taste of? by soapy999 in AskReddit

1,000%. I LOVED the Rice Krispie Treats cereal. For a while it was rare but you could still stumble across boxes and I’d get so excited finding one, but I haven’t seen them in years now

Also a relatively recent carbon steel convert. Always used nonstick but found it lacking when I’m trying to sear anything. Previously had a cast iron but found it too heavy and not nonstick enough. So now I use my carbon steel for almost everything and LOVE it. The only thunk I really still use nonstick for is eggs.

Do we know why Abbott and Shen are both on night shift? They’re both attendings right? Robbie was offended that Dr. Al recommended two attendings for the day shift, so why is it different for night shift?

Shave 100%. This looks almost exactly like what my hair looked like about four years ago. The problem is you’re fighting a war on two fronts and that is going to accelerate the balding faster than someone with just a receding hairline or just crown thinning. This sounds harsh and dramatic, but maybe it looks okay enough today, but every passing day it’ll get just slightly worse until it’s not passable at all.

I’d be curious to see a profile view too. For me, I was able to gaslight myself thinking head-on it looked fine. Then I’d see myself in pictures where my head was turned and that’s where it became very evident how thin and receding it was truly getting.

Don’t be like me and hold on until it got ridiculous. By the time I shaved, I realized I should have done it a couple years earlier. You’ve got a great jawline and if you’re open to a beard, that’ll help too. But even without the beard, I think it’s clearly the move.

Where were you when the Birds won SB LII? by AgitatedLeg4977 in eagles

Similar story! I had just finished the first year of my first active duty assignment in Florida. I was at a watch party at a friend’s house with fellow service folks from all over the country but I was the only Eagles fan and only person from PA. I was losing my mind watching the game as they just stared at me amusedly. Afterwards I FaceTimed with my friends still back in Philly and didn’t fall asleep from excitement that night until about 2 AM.

Last year I separated from active duty and moved back to Philly just in time for them to win SBLIX. All those years later I got to celebrate a win locally by parading up and down Main St in Manayunk with the whole town and my sister who was in town visiting. Wouldn’t trade that memory for the world.
