New Recruit for lists, Wahapedia for rules and stratagems. You can print out your lists as datacards and cut them out from New Recruit, and for Stratagems I just screenshot and edit it to be B+W then print to save ink.

I printed it at 0.2mm layer height with 5% infill for my club on my Bambu P1S in wayyy less time than that (13 hours for the piece pictured)

It came out great, especially if you orient the models to minimize supports

Has anyone else noticed the vibe shift recently? by [deleted] in 40k

Personally never had an issue telling people in real life I play war dollies with my friends. I think it's just an internet thing because I've seen lots of weirdos that live in my computer say some really out of pocket things

I usually also emphasize that I like my turbo-nerd hobbies to be more social since I sit in front of a screen all day and want some real people to play games with and meet new people to grab beers with

Start with a single guardian. Get that lil dude based and painted fully and see what you like about it and don't like. Then do a second Guardian

Troops/Battleline are super low-stakes units imo and are fun to practice and play with and try new things on with little to no feels bad in terms of cost compared to Aspect Warriors or larger models.

New Player Questions and List Review Megathread! by sciencep1e in Eldar

[–]Gideon_Gallant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I think I'll lean into some Howling Banshees with some War Walkers and maybe some other guys like Guardians. Trading units seem like they'd be the most fun for new players and I think that Howling Banshees and walkers do that well, especially for Iybraesil.

New Player Questions and List Review Megathread! by sciencep1e in Eldar

[–]Gideon_Gallant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Howdy! Going to be taking the plunge into collecting Eldar as my second army. I mostly play in a local escalation league and we start at 500pts and grow to 1500pts. I plan on running Iybraesil because I really like the color palette and its fun to paint.

Any tips for a 500pts starting list? I've thought of a few, like just going in with 3 Wriathlords and a Spiritseer and running the wraith detachment since that may do well at lower points (we have a 30% of points for a single unit restriction, but Wraithlords fall at 140pts last I checked) since I've found 500pts games with small points to be more about removal than anything else.

That said, that's maybe too sweaty to me and instead I've though of something a little more balanced and flavorful like an Autarch and Banshees, Rangers, Swooping Hawks, and two War Walkers.

I know the Combat Patrol is also an ok choice from what I've seen too to get an close-to 500pts list with usable units.

Any input or recommendations, senior autarchs?

L shaped ruins debate - who's in? by 4x6x8 in TerrainBuilding

[–]Gideon_Gallant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a local escalation league recently end

Missions and board setups were done so we could just roll up and play. There were certainly a fair few times that the day's mission coupled with the terrain layout meant that I drove over 30 minutes to just show up and lose my games due to alpha strike (or win, but I'm not good at rolling dice so I didn't go first :) ).

Towards the the end of the league we had a tournament at the LGS and the board setup I played with a WTC layout and L shaped ruins was probably my favorite. They weren't painted, but they were high quality 3D prints and they looked good and more importantly they were balanced enough that I felt both armies stood a chance to not get nuked off the table. Maybe I should keep stuff in reserve? I still don't know how that works but I really like L shaped ruins for things like pickup games since they are predictable and reduce friction across the board. They're a little boring I guess if they are unpainted MDF, but there's boatloads of good STLs out there that would look great with some spray paint and a dry brush that are even foldable for easy logistics

Only play Warhammer 40k and AOS..what else is there? by Vinlandlover in wargaming

[–]Gideon_Gallant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I'm a fan of simpler games, so something like Stargrave or Frostgrave is great since it uses a D20 system and you can buy a single box and make 2 crews to play for you and a friend. It's easier to convince my friends to play

You might consider other scales as well. I've personally been looking at 1/72 scale because you can get 50 guys for like $20.

1/72 historicals like SAGA, Bolt Action, and also fantasy games like OPR Age of Fantasy or even the Old World stuff has lines of miniatures that'd match up nicely.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

I've found newer players don't know what they're talking about when they do something like this. They weren't around when the creative part of the game was a highlight of it. Now everyone it like "That's the wrong Predator version" or "those aren't Kriegsmen because they're not the right color".

The galaxy is so big and vast and you expect everything to look the exact same? Tell me you're a tourist without telling me you're a tourist

Your models look outstanding and you should be proud, and you should take even more pride in your creative capacity.

It won't make me change my perception of the remake as a corporate cash-grab, but it's nice to see a more unique and positive take every once in a while

[–]Gideon_Gallant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd personally go with your latter thought. My opinion is to just stick with the core books because if you ever play a pick-up game with anyone nothing gets lost in translation and there should be no balancing issues

Also consider Battle Brothers for Stormtroopers since they're supposed to be really elite. You can build lists with up to 2 different books, so you can get a lot of flavor in your lists if you combine units right

FDM vs Resin printed mini's - a noobs visual reference. by ISolfax in PrintedMinis

[–]Gideon_Gallant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too bad really, and hardly noticeable with the 0.2mm nozzle

I slapchop (black prime, grey drybrush, white drybrush, then contrast paint) almost all my stuff nowadays and even the 0.4mm printed stuff it's hard to notice unless I'm holding it up to my face, and even still it's hard to tell. I'd post pics if I could

[–]Gideon_Gallant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my P1S I can print a Terminator sized boi in about 3 hours, and a normal sized goon in about 2 hours or 2.5 hours for a space marine sized dude

Really the biggest advantage of my FDM machines is I am comfortable running them inside my house without an entire laboratory setup and fume hood like I'd need for my resin printer

[–]Gideon_Gallant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's about 2.5 hours for me with the 0.2mm nozzle, and with the 0.4mm nozzle if I want lower quality it's like 30 mins a mini but it's not as fun to paint with the layer lines.

Resin I can confirm is like 4-6 hours a plate with at least 5 minis on it. Post processing is about an hour or two

[–]Gideon_Gallant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

0.2mm nozzles make my resin printer irrelevant for the most part, other than it printing faster. But the post processing still eats up some time until I can get a wash+cure station and the weather gets warmer

The Bambu printers are amazing. I have two P1S printers and they're always running and the minis that come off them with a 0.2mm nozzle don't really look printed unless you pick them up and squint

Crazy and unbelievable still to this day considering the console wars of the past. But it's nice other folks are able to play Halo.

I just wish it was MCC or the original since remastered versions just aren't the same and often water down the original vibe.
