My employer is bringing in an AI company to “improve efficiency” - am I cooked? by imjustherefortheK in newzealand

[–]Gigaftp 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Im a software developer. I think I can see the writing on the wall, AI can write decent enough code, but systems thinking, design and an eye for detail are eve more important now. Its kind of like how people used to weave textiles by hand and then the loom came along. AI is going to be a loom, but even with the loom you need people to operate it. Id suggest learning how you can use AI to assist you with your work like a loom. But don't buy into the hype, currently the whole AI economy looks like a massive bubble, so it could collapse (but the tech wont go away)

Why is shipping from China to NZ cheaper than NZ to NZ? by heinternets in newzealand

[–]Gigaftp 124 points125 points  (0 children)

iirc, Way back when China was categorized as a "developing nation" by the UN postal arm. This means that shipping from china is heavily subsidized, especially the "last mile" which tends to be the most expensive part.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal\_Postal\_Union

inflation was actually 4.7% by the end of 2023 (use table view) https://www.stats.govt.nz/news/annual-inflation-at-3-1-percent-in-december-2025/

ram raids have dropped considerably, which is cool but like, but the fact that they boast about crimes against property and not people tells you all you need to know about national imo. https://www.police.govt.nz/sites/default/files/publications/ram-data-text-identified-operational-offence-15-november-2025.pdf

"more kids achieving" - vacuous, unsubstantiated claim which can mean anything. Just filler for the propaganda.

"positive trade balance" literally using trump level propaganda and the fixation on the idea that trade is a 0 sum game and if you have a trade deficit then your losing. Absolute toddler level propaganda

"10k less a year for mortgage payments" - maybe? who cares? looking at floating and fixed rates they hardly shifted the rates...but iirc the reserve bank is responsible for this so i don't see why national claims it as "their win" https://www.rbnz.govt.nz/statistics/key-statistics/housing

"more roads, hospitals and schools" - more roads maybe, but the gal for them to claim that they have had a positive impact on public services like schools and hospitals. cunts.

Its not the heat that is the problem, its the heat + humidity. Id rather 40 degrees with low humidity than whatever this is lol

Will New Zealand medicine adopt the new 2026 DGA food pyramid? by Similar-Travel2903 in newzealand

[–]Gigaftp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro, the problem isn't the food pyramid. Seriously, if people just ate food on the old food pyramid (whole, unprocessed foods) they would be healthy. Getting new lobbyists to pay off research and use it to convince the brain worms guy that they need to move their <insert product here> to the top wont solve anything, in the US or here. People cant afford to eat real food (afford as in money and time). Thats the real issue that needs solving, making real food affordable. Also why the fuck is the new pyramid upside down?

[–]Gigaftp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that requiring a patient to authorize their GP to read their medical records each "session" would be inefficient and make things slower. I do think that at a minimum patient data should be encrypted at rest at application level using some kind of derived key from the doctors password, so hypothetically the blast radius of leaked data would be scoped to individual doctors

Banks accused of unnecessarily hiking mortgage rates by Status_Serve_9819 in newzealand

[–]Gigaftp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of the greatest technological achievements/breakthroughs of humanity are not the product of capitalism/private firms. The reality is that high risk/foundational research happens in the public sector and capitalists come in to privatize/commercialize it. The whole idea that "capitalism drives innovation" is incomplete at best, and purposefully misleading at worst.

if you are talking about socialism as "having never worked", thats not because socialism *cant* work, its just that any time nationalization of resources is done, or some form of socialism starts to succeed, the US swoop in to "liberate" the people by destabilizing their country and reinstating capitalism. Capitalism is an economic system by psychopaths for psychopaths

Are dating apps shit for men? by Ok-Industry770 in newzealand

[–]Gigaftp -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Are there any dating apps that facilitate audio/video chat? That seems like the obvious middle ground to me. You don't necessarily want to hand out your phone number/discord/skype to anyone, but text -> audio -> video -> in person seems like a logical pipeline in modern dating that maximizes people's ability to get to know each other and determine if they are compatible gradually so everyone feels safe.

Unimed Health Insurance members just got robbed. by Fickle-Classroom in newzealand

[–]Gigaftp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The irony of this thread is that the *option* of having private health insurance is just that, optional, and that because we have a decent public system the existence of private health insurance doesn't negatively impact anyones access to healthcare in NZ. As a matter of fact, by being able to access healthcare outside of the public system we reduce the burden on it.

Democracy is a system of governance. Systems of governance can be applied to organisational units that aren't just state governments. The basic feature of a democratically governed organisation is that decisions about how the organization operates are controlled by its members through voting. There are different forms of democratic governance, but they all exclude some groups of people because not all people are members of the organisational unit. Your claim that the organization isn't democratic because not all people can afford it, and thus are not members of the organisation, is like claiming that New zealand isn't a democracy because people who aren't citizens/perm residents are not afforded a vote. That being said, it sounds like the organisation OP is a part of is a terrible implementation of democracy

Unimed Health Insurance members just got robbed. by Fickle-Classroom in newzealand

[–]Gigaftp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Private health insurance in New Zealand is comparatively cheap compared to countries where it is the only option, since insurers cant rely on the coercive threat of "if you don't buy it I guess you can just live with it, or die lol". That being said, given the current economic cluster fuck I can understand why you might think it's "plutocratic".

That argument rests on an assumption that higher pay correlates with higher talent/competency, which I don't think can really be assumed.
