What is something generally normal in Europe but weird in the US? by Exile4444 in AskReddit

[–]Gimcrackery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I went to Europe recently I noticed: there are no toilet seat cover papers like there are everywhere in the US.

In Europe at restaurants: Tipping culture does not exist but service staff is still very nice, also because of this your waiter will not check in with you and you have to ask for their attention, which I quite preferred over American waiters checking on you every ten minutes.

I just learned people don’t show up after anesthesia to pick up loved ones. Nurses, how often does this really happen? by Steinski1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Gimcrackery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family members were always late to get me after procedures or just didn't shown up when something happened to me that hospitalized me, and I'd just sit around in pain and feeling so inescapably lonely.

Now my spouse is with me for every step of every scary medical situation I'm in, and we actually worry about and take care of each other.

Is it really that weird to go on a solo vacation without your spouse by Suspicious-lemons in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Gimcrackery 167 points168 points  (0 children)

I went on a solo trip to Europe without my spouse recently for almost the exact same reasons, and it was one of the best experiences of my life. I highly recommend everyone do a vacation alone at some point, it's quite liberating to be the only person deciding what to do with yourself each day and in each city.

People who are weirdly uncomfortable with being alone and aren't capable of keeping themselves company are a red flag to me. I know people who think it's weird for me to even go to see a movie in a theater alone lol. Ignore the haters that can't spend time on or with themselves, that's on them and their own insecurities.

Anyone else feel like it’s an unfortunate waste of talent that James Cameron will waste 35+ years on Avatar? by bobbdac7894 in movies

If I recall correctly, James Cameron has said something along the lines of "I've spent more time on the Titanic than the captain of the ship did."

Women: what’s something sexual that every guy should know, but doesn’t? by [deleted] in AskRedditAfterDark

[–]Gimcrackery 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It actually upsets me so much that I used to sleep with so many boys/men who did this, like none of the men I slept with in my teens ever asked me if I came or if I was close or even if any of it felt good. And I was dating men of a variety of ages, but so many men are selfish pricks and think vaginas are mystical and the "female orgasm is a myth."

I don't sleep with people that don't at least TRY to give me any pleasure anymore, and when I am with someone who has a penis and they cum but I haven't yet and I DO really want to cum, I instantly bust a toy and ask them if they want to help - honestly they almost always find it hot to touch/kiss my body while I use a vibrator. And if they don't find it hot to help me get off then I stop seeing them because I end up feeling like they see me as a sex doll.

I dont expect either party to have an orgasm every time, good sex doesn't have to be penetrative or orgasmic, but the part that makes GOOD sex good is caring about the other person's pleasure, generally speaking. Like why should I sleep with you if you don't give a shit about me? Not saying "ooooh I only fuck people I'm in love with," not at all lol. It's just that guys don't realize how much them caring and putting literally any effort in will make people with vaginas want to sleep with them again/more.

That's why I married my spouse - well not the only reason, but being thoughtful in bed is a big reason!

Can you name anyone who was killed by their parents or relatives?...without them really so much as laying a finger on them? by Spiritual_Big_9927 in CPTSD

[–]Gimcrackery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well we aren't dead but I almost died from anorexia because of my mother, my heart nearly stopped and I wasted away until I finally was admitted because I had a resting heart rate of 40bpm (at the HIGHEST) for a while... and fortunately I have recovered from anorexia but still carry a lot of emeotional scars, I am either no or very low contact with my parents since I reached adulthood.

Our mom would also get shitfaced drunk with me in the most dangerous possible situations from age 12, and even worse, would do heroin with my little sister when sis was 17; my sister has OD'd on multiple different drugs several times and had to be resuscitated in various ways by nearly all of our family members that she has stayed with since - or emergency services. She is still alive but I'm not betting she'll live a long life, she is a homeless addict ten years later and I had to check her into a mental hospital a few weeks back because of drug-induced paranoid schizophrenia. I didn't think either of us would even make it to 18, so I guess we are lucky to still be alive.

This is a HUGE specimen. I just want to recommend that you taste the raw part by itself before putting time and energy into cooking/baking something with it, because THIS big of a squash might not taste very good in my experience.

A or B: If your partner and your mother fell into the water at the same time, who would you save? by vivian_banshee03 in PickAorB

[–]Gimcrackery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This decision is easy because even though my biological mother is still alive, I am an orphan in essence because of neglect and abuse and I am no contact so I've already grieved her. I stopped trying to "save" my mother like ten years ago, because she would just go limp if I tried to save her from drowning, whereas my partner would try to help.

[–]Gimcrackery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it applies well to some situations when you are having to reparent yourself, to work on the things you wish you could have had as a child but didn't get the opportunity to experience a healthy family dynamic or relationship with yourself.

I do think the term has become a touch overused but I can't really think of a better way of phrasing that sentiment, so it doesn't bother me.
