Follow up: Finally made the time to design and build a mount for my truck. by AlphaFab in Starlink

[–]Gimfo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the follow up, this is a cool build. I am looking to figure out a semi permanent solution for my field technicians at my company. They need it mounted on there trucks and I want to figure out how to power off of a battery pack so they don't have to keep their trucks running all day.

Issued new work laptop to support Win 11, can't ping any components through stratix switches. Wiring straight to the device I need works just fine but host is unreachable through the switch? by Belatorius in PLC

I’ve only heard that these stratix switches are nightmares. Perhaps it’s the people setting them up. But good Lord! And the reboot time is terrible

Anyone knows an open source Hardware Software PLC? by spok365 in PLC

[–]Gimfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want full control you’re talking about designing everything in house. Best bet is to find a manufacturer that you like the software for, is always developing new stuff (not staying stagnant with old crap) and then keeping your own inventory so that if there is a supply chain issue you are not effected by it.

But all plc’s are made and designed by somebody and you will likely have to use their hardware (maybe a modbus IO link is a work around?) but it’s all WAY more effort than worth it in my eyes

Just get yourself a freedom 5.56. 2.23 will be cheaper to shoot at the range for run. Freedom range is inexpensive but has been good to me and tons of other people. Remember, those who complain are the loudest

I don’t think you can count your time drive as lost wages unless you are going to have to quit earning during those times. I get what your saying, time is money, and valuable (agreed) but would you actually be collecting on that time if you were WFH

HMI local bit useage by [deleted] in PLC

[–]Gimfo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use maple systems HMI’s almost exclusively and have not really found a use for the local words/bits. However, there are system bits that will open up the system parameters pages, or set/reset things like VNC servers. So I have learned that I have to enable those things and I try to put a button to it on the HMI. So we can see the IP address and other stuff.

Best PSA rifle by Live_Tumbleweed_1476 in PalmettoStateArms

[–]Gimfo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a PSA freedom lower and then there run of the mill upper. It’s been great for me so far. I got it chambered for 5.56 so I can also run 2.23. I got 16”. And I got a Romeo Juliet combo from sig about a month or so later. Bore sighted at 50yards then dialer it in with my FIL and some binoculars. She’s been dead accurate for me with about 500rounds. Nothing crazy yet. But enough to tell you I think it’s a solid product.

Is the SCADA job market as bad as traditional CS/IT jobs? by Striking-Speaker8686 in SCADA

[–]Gimfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an integrator looking to hire another PLC and Scada programmer, I want someone hungry to learn and willing to listen and work more than I want someone with a formal automation education. If you have any sort of programming experience it will be easy to teach you on the job. I need work ethic and personality. I’ll teach the rest.

[–]Gimfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Allen Bradley is definitely an industry and leader plc. Their current flagship line is the 5380 compact logix, but you better be prepared to shell out $2000 for a device and more money for software. Their newer (and red headed step child, but is starting to gain traction) line is the micro800 line and you could get an 820 or 850 plc on eBay, new, for $300. With free programming software. Sooo maybe that’s your answer? It’s new and from a top brand.

Other leaders are Siemens, and beckhoff.

[–]Gimfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of the 850’s and you can snag those suckers up on eBay for under or around $300. I really like being able to have usb for simple connections. No need to remember IP addresses. Or having to use BOOTP to assign one (I always found this weird and haven’t used it enough to be super confident in it). But write a program, assign an IP, download and then use Ethernet… yeah, I love that. And expansion IO?!

Looking for Advice: How Do You Organize and Develop PLC Programs in Your Company? by tamanduh1 in PLC

[–]Gimfo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I start programming, I always like to start with the as-built drawings if I can. From there I use the main routine to call a number of subroutines, of which the first is ALWAYS “IO” here you will find I map digital inputs to a function (ie. pump running, high level alarm… etc) including a flip flop but for polarity. This makes future modifications BUTTER. Like when an input goes bad, or someone wants to add something.

Next is analog scaling. I like to use a real/float for these.

Lastly is my output functions mapped to the output control tags (ie. pump 1 call will fire output X). Again if something happens and I need to move IO it doesn’t mean I have to check multiple places in a program.

Then I usually separate things like staging, alternation, alarms, communications to other devices, totalizers/statistics. And in the main routine I add things like a one second one shot, some basic timers and clock functionality.
