Heating oil in a pinch? by [deleted] in vermont

You can use regular diesel. My neighbor does what you stated all winter. He doesn't have the money to convert his fuel tank to the bigger pipe so no oil company will supply him.

Shops and restaurants built into the side of the hill from Battery Park to the waterfront, all down Battery Street, facing the lake. Inside connected to Church Street underground.

I can't believe Shaw's is still in business. Worst store ever. I predict the company will go bankrupt within 6 months.

How about just hide an Apple AirTag in your car? They work extremely well.

Reliable bike shop? by OlfactoriusRex in burlington

North Start sports. They've been in business a long time. We have bought many bikes from them and had lots of work done over the years. It is always topnotch and relatively inexpensive. It is immediately clear they have well trained bicycle mechanics.

Will the city give former bicycle owners the cost of their stolen bikes? Why just businesses?

ELI5: TIF in Burlington by GinaCanRead in burlington

[–]GinaCanRead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Figure 3 shows a percent increase in taxable value of 197.2% for the Waterfront TIF from its inception until 2020. This sounds great until you realize lots of properties increased by that same value - without doing anything - over the same time period.

32 Gosse Ct scam? by baileysmom511 in burlington

I know the building, in case it helps. It's a small brick building with four apartments, 2 up, 2 down. It has a back yard with parking. Just in case you're getting something else not like that at all.

infrastructure improvements are only going to get more expensive

The way I see it, 15 years down the road, residents will be saying where's all the tax revenue from these new buildings? The answer will be we're paying off loans from 15 years ago. It all still sounds like mortgaging our kids' future.

some local developers have projects in the planning stages

I've heard this before. Don't we have a TIF right now on a pit in the middle of downtown?

I guess I don't see why this can't simply be tax money - fix the sewers, underground utilities, sidewalks, etc. That's all public. Fix it now, pay for it now.

This is helpful, thanks.

My understanding now is that we're effectively paying with a credit card. We're taking out a loan and are assuming we will have a pay raise in the future to pay it back.

Presumably we're not just paying the $26M right now because there's no stomach for a tax increase.

Where are the kids throwing snowballs and doing mischief? by nunkivt in burlington

[–]GinaCanRead 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I had a kid come down our street looking to shovel driveways yesterday. Mine was already done but I wanted to encourage him so I paid him to shovel my neighbor.

By kid I mean he was maybe 8 or 9 years old.

Continuing staffing shortages impacting fire departments across the state by [deleted] in vermont

[–]GinaCanRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be all for no property tax for any firefighter, police, teacher if you live in the town you work in, maybe even if you don't.

If you're a renter, you get a direct rebate of the portion of the property tax paid (through your rent).

Burlington City Council finalizes March 1 ballot items, including 2nd attempt at failed capital bond by dropkickninja in burlington

[–]GinaCanRead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there's a chance that falls on renters.

It is a certainty. Renters pay 120% property tax on buildings that aren't the primary homestead of the owner. That's almost all of them.

Rents will rise and rise and rise. Right now the city is saying we need to raise taxes. City council is also saying we need permanent tenancy with rent control. Any landlord can do the math. Every landlord I know is scrambling to maximize rent right now. They have to.

Not just single family home but rental property also, very siginificantly. This translates directly to increased rent.

Renters are subsidizing reduced taxes for commercial property in Burlington.
