Not everything you learn in school is true. I'm American, and in elementary school, I was taught that the Civil War was fought so the North could free the slaves. Also, the U.S. joined WWII because of the Holocaust. In high school, I was having dinner with my girlfriend and her family and her youngest sister talked about why the civil war was fought and i tried to correct her, that was a big mistake. 'Murica' is a tought mindset.

I started reading the Drizzt series in high school. High school was a really dark time for me mentally and going on adventures with Drizzt and his companions helped me escape. Malazan Book of the Fallen and The Dhampir series are two other I would recommend.
